Saks Fifth Avenue American Express Platinum Benefit Now Live

Update 07/02/18: Benefit is now live. If you have the Vanilla platinum it seems like the credit is posting after you make any purchase (even if it’s not at Saks Fifth Avenue). I suspect American Express will fix this issue and claw back the statement credits but who knows. Only seems to be happening on the Vanilla variation and not on the others (update: showing on other variations as well).

The Benefit

Direct link to enrollment

In case you didn’t know American Express personal platinum cardholders are having a new benefit added on July 1st. You’ll receive a twice annual $50 credit to Saks Fifth Avenue, one from January 1st until June 30th and another from July 1st until December 31st. Keep in mind you can enroll now, but you can’t use the benefit until July 1st so no $50 credit for the first half of 2018 unfortunately.  Unfortunately gift cards are excluded as rumored, more on the restrictions below.

The Fine Print

  • Only the Basic Card Member or Authorized Account Manager(s) on a U.S. Consumer Platinum Card® Account can enroll in the benefit.
  • Not valid on Saks Fifth Avenue Gift Cards or purchases at outlet locations (in stores and online)
  • Excludes purchases at restaurants located within the store and Online Bill Pay for Saks Credit
  • Eligible purchases must be charged to the enrolled Card Account for the benefit to apply.
  • Purchases by both the enrolled Basic Card Member and Additional Card Members on the eligible Card Account are eligible for statement credits.
  • However, each Card Account is only eligible for up to a $50 statement credit from January through June and up to a $50 statement credit from July through December for a total of $100 per calendar year in statement credits across all Cards on the Account.
  • Valid at Saks Fifth Avenue online or at locations in the US and US Territories.
  • Not valid on online purchases shipped outside of the US. Please allow 2-4 weeks after an eligible purchase is charged to your Card Account for statement credit(s) to be posted to the Account.

Our Verdict

Gift cards being excluded make the benefit significantly less valuable for me as I don’t exactly shop at Saks Fifth Avenue on the regular. Keep in mind that’s just what the fine print states, gift card purchases might still work but I guess we won’t know for sure until after the end of July as it does say you need to allow two-four weeks for the statement credit to post.

I absolutely hate how all these big companies write terms and conditions. It’s as if they all took the same college course on ambiguous communications.

Is it “Not valid on Saks Fifth Avenue Gift Cards.” AND “Not valid at purchases at outlet locations.”?

OR is it, “Not valid on (Saks Fifth Avenue Gift Cards or purchases) at outlet locations.”?

I believe they intend the first interpretation, but a coherent argument could be made for the second.

Enrollment link worked for me with Schwab Plat. Got an email confirmation as well.

I also have the Schwab and nothing appears when I go to that link. When I manually view the list of benefits Saks is not mentioned there at all.

I have the Schwab Plat as well….I see the option on the Benefits page but when I click on it the site times out. Tried different browsers and computers. Will try again later

If you don’t shop at saks why do you care about gift cards?

Imagine giving someone a $50 gift card as a gift. It’s a punishment. Spend $200 more to get something you cam use the $50 on.

You care about gift cards because you can resell it.
And if you do care about intended recipient of your gift, try to find gift they may find useful.

Probably not much at $50. May be a cellphone case I guess?

Cellphone case my foot. I was looking at those and they average around $150-$200. For a cellphone case! What?!

All items under $50 – there’s a bunch of cell phone cases in there. Link borrowed from someone on Reddit.

I will spend it on beauty products. Plenty of items are under $50.

I’m going with a leather belt. The site lets you filter by under $50 items so that’s nice.

Otherwise I’d contemplate socks, maybe wallets, hats, gloves, a tie?

This benefit is worth nowhere near $$50 to me, but hey it’s worth something.

If we purchase now can we trigger the January – June credit or does it only work starting July 1st?

In the screenshot in the post it says not effective until July 1.

Probably not as the benefit is going in effect starting July 1st

This is this the real question. I also want to know.

Also,

Regular saks shopper here, I checked my Amex transaction details and it does not look like tier 3 data to me.

Any word if this will work at Saks OFF 5TH?

Jesse
Jesse

That’s the question. Downtown Minneapolis only has a Saks OFF 5th location. It seems like there are generally many more OFF 5th stores than standard ones nationwide. Chicago has one standard store and 3 OFF 5th stores.

If one has multiple Personal Platinum cards under the same login, do they need to do something like the multiple tab trick to enroll each one?

Joe
Joe

No, this is a benefit for each card just like the airline reimbursement. You can enroll each card separately and it works fine. I just did Ameriprise and MB with no problems.

hank

Airline reimbursement is across multiple PLATINUM cards??? Only seeing it once on my plain Plat and MB.

By outlets, do they mean Saks Off 5th? Or is there an actual Saks outlet?

Not working for my personal Platinum. I get this error:

“We’re sorry, but we could not find a page matching your request. Please check that you have entered the correct address. You can also return to the previous page, or go to the homepage.”

I got that too. Fortunately there’s no hurry yet.

The same error on my wife’s card, but mine goes through fine. Wonder what is the problem.

David
David

I think it is their system. My personal card was enrolled about two hours ago without problem. Now I cannot enroll my wife’s card with this error. So I went back to see what is happening on my personal card, and it is also showing “status not available”. Actually all the similar kind of enrollment benefit is showing the same error, including the airline credit. So I guess it is their IT issue. They must have temporarily disabled it to fix something.

Has anyone thought about buying a placeholder item just over $50 and then returning it for a gift card? I did a lot of that back when Discover was doing that 10% Apple Pay promotion to get around those pesky gift card restrictions…

yes, that’s the plan. that will work

Site appears to be hammered right now and the benefits parts goes down quite a bit, probably just need to wait until later to sign up.
