BBVA Compass Travel Promotion (6% Back on $1-2k Travel)

The Offer

There are three separate offers Compass cardholders are receiving:

  • Via Email: Spend $2,000 in the travel category on the BBVA Compass NBA credit card and receive a bonus of 10,000 points, or $100. Valid July 1, 2015 – July 15, 2015.
  • Via Email: Spend $1000 on travel and receive a bonus of 5000 points, or $50. Valid July 1, 2015 – July 15, 2015.
  • The other offer is showing up for many on the billing statement: Spend $1000 in travel and receive 5000 points or $50. Valid June 25, 2015 – July 9, 2015.

bbva travel bonus 2

Previous offers from BBVA Compass resulted in everyone being eligible for them, even if they weren’t specifically targeted with the offer. It’s unclear if that will be the case with these offers as well, although most cardholders likely got one or both of these offers.

If someone got two of these offers (say the first and third) it may be possible to double-dip and get both bonuses. Who knows?

Our Verdict

If you have a lot of travel expenses, this is a nice deal. $100 on $2000 of spend is 5% back. Add the 1% that you’ll always get and the total will be 6% cashback. You do need to get in $2000 of spend within the 15-day time  period to qualify.
If you got the second offer mentioned above, you max benefit will be just $50. On the other hand, it’s an easier threshold to meet since you can get the $50 bonus with just $1000 in spend. Personally, I’d have preferred that offer to the $2000 offer.

Be sure that the spend is completed within the required timeframe, see Online Credit Card Purchases – Transaction Date and Post Date.

It’s nice to see the good new continuing to come out of the Compass credit card and we look forward to more such promotions in the future.

Chuck,

What I meant was if the last promotion was any indication there’s a good chance that for the last 2-3 days of this promotion the points will not post automatically.

Nothing new or unexpected here, but I think that info belongs in newsletter, not on the blog.

Why would you expect loading Serve to count as a travel expense?

I wouldn’t. But I did expect the credit. Just like last time. Never underestimate the incompetency of internal controls!

I made $1000 worth of purchases by July 6th. This $50 bonus posted on July 11th.

Plot twist: It was $1000 worth of Serve loads.

Wow. Unfortunately it’s too late for me to try that. Did you get all the 5X rewards you were expecting from the Finals promotion?

I received all 5x points from the Finals promotion except for the purchases from June 17 and 18.

I’ll bet that they accidentally gave out the bonus to anyone with $1000 purchases. I remember some people reported that they got the nba finals $50 bonus even though they didn’t spend anything in the appropriate categories.

There’s a good chance since it probably won’t post until tomorrow or later that the points won’t automatically credit. If that’s the case you won’t get the $100 if it’s not travel expenses.

Same here. $1000 in serve loads got me a “beat the buzzer” 5000 pt bonus. These people have a funny computer system. Oh well, I redeemed that right away. 🙂

Looks like the Annual fee waiver is extended until 8/31. For those of you who already have this card, do you recommend getting it?

Yes, they seem to offer deals quite often. Even if they drop the 5X (likely), they will probably still offer a nice deal during the NBA All Star Game and NBA Finals.

It is crazy that they require the transaction be completed within the period of promotion. I wonder how their 5x during NBA All Star Weekend is supposed to work. Do they expect that both purchase date and post date happen during the weekend? Do they realize that this is impossible? (And even if it was possible this is out of customer’s control.)

Same here… My two transactions on 6.17 and 6.18 all posted on 6.19. There’s no 5x so far.

It seems that they didn’t mention what counted for travel purchases.

My rewards show that all the transactions “posted” on or after 6/19/2015 are not eligible for the 5x

Based on the NBA finals promo, the travel would actually be only 5% (1% base and 4% bonus). Only the grocery/gas got 6% (2% base plus 4% bonus)

stvr,
I hadn’t thought of that. When they said 6/18 regardless of the duration, I didn’t think about the actual end of the finals. I keep hoping it’s because the weekends don’t count for the 7 business days and that happened to hit two weekends(?). That would mean we should see 6/17 post tomorrow.
