Two Pieces Of Positive News For NBA Cardholders

People have been having a lot of issues with the BBVA NBA card that earns 5x points on all purchases during NBA finals and the all star weekend. I’d like to share two pieces of news that are positive (hopefully your account isn’t locked or shut down).

If you combine these two pieces of news, you’ll realize that you’ll earn a massive $65 cash back (6,500 points) if you make $250 in purchases at gas or grocery stores. You only get the 5,000 point bonus once, but it’s still well worth doing.

It’s nice to share some positive news for a change, let’s hope there is more to come rather than the usual doom and gloom.

Just updating, I had to fax in documents over the weekend, but since then I have been spending large amounts without issue. I’ve now run my credit line out, and hoping it will reset from some pulls (I couldn’t figure out how to push in time).
So for those them hemming and hawing, especially if you faxed in documents, the light is green right now I believe.

Hello all,
Does anyone know if we should make a purchase before Jun. 18th or the purchase must be POSTED before 18th to get the 5x? I’m worried that the pending transaction before 18th may miss the 5x rewards. Thanks!!!

I asked them this exact question. They told me that the transaction date (not the posting date) is what counts. If I was you I would send a secure message on the website like I did just so you have proof.

How quickly do you guys see the points post on the TripleDouble site? My first transaction was on 6/11, and I still dont see any points in m account. Should I give them a call or is this normal?

They don’t post that quickly. Maybe a week or a bit less? As with all banks, less activity happens over a weekend. I would not call. It’s only been 2 business days.

I also received the 5000 pts and I didn’t spend anything at grocery or gas stations. Only used at CVS and to pay insurance and NBA Season tickets

I received 5000 points for Fastbreak Promotion. I have no idea why I received it. I didn’t spend even one cent in groceries or gas or any category that is remotely related to them. Also I checked the reward website and made sure that none of my transaction were unexpectedly coded as grocery or gas. And as far as I know there is no ongoing Fastbreak Promotion other than the one for spending $250 on groceries and gas. So out of nowhere I received 5000 points.

I am pretty sure I received 5x for estimated tax payments. The triple double rewards site is a gigantic mess so it’s hard to be certain.

Some of my first tax payments have now appeared on the rewards site and it looks like I got 5X for them. If I understand my discussion with BBVA Compass customer service correctly, the 5X promotion goes until midnight tonight US Central time (Thursday 2016-06-18 11:59:59pm CDT).

Sorry for the typo. I meant to write “…and [I] took a friendly tone in all of my conversations with the phone staff.” I don’t know how the word “not” gto into the version of that sentence that I previously posted.

I just got a fraud hold released.

Wednesday (maybe a day after receiving and activating the card): I put almost $5k on the card, consisting of mostly state estimated income tax payment, but also just over $250 at a grocery store and some other spend.

Thursday; I put almost $5k on the card, mostly federal estimated income tax payment.

Friday: Fraud hold. I called in. After a medium wait (under 5 minutes, I think), the friendly customer service representative transferred me to the call queue for the fraud deparatment, but the call dropped after about a ten minute wait. Maybe it was my cell phone that dropped the call. I was pretty busy, so didn’t call back until the next day.

Saturday: I twice tried calling the direct phone number I was given for the fraud department (+1 855 634 1450) and got a message indicating that the call had not gone through. I called customer service, and got a representative after a medium wait and explained caught the CSR up on the previous day’s events. He confirmed that there were phone problems being reported with the direct number for the fraud department. The friendly CSR asked me to verify the last declined transaction, and then tried to help me transfer to the fraud department after a few minutes on hold, he came back on to say that he couldn’t reach anyone there, and I asked what I should do next, he said he wanted to try again immediately, and then, after another medium wait, I was connected to a friendly fraud specialist who just asked me to verify the last few declined transactions and immediately reactivated my account. She spoke pretty quickly, giving me the impression that they are trying to work through their backlog as quickly as possible. A few minutes later, I successfully used the card.

I did not post anything to social media, did not mention the possibility of doing so, and did not took a friendly tone in all of my conversations with the phone staff.

Regarding whether income tax payments will earn the 5% bonus, I am not aware of any reports one way or the other. So far, as of day 4, https://www.bbvacompass.com and https://credit.compassbank.com show only the first day of activity, and https://bbvacompasspointsrewards.com/tripledoublerewards shows no activity and zero reward points, although all three systems see my account.

By the way, I also plan to pay rent by Plastiq.com and would be interested in any data points about that.

Just an update for others, I had posted a facebook message about my disappointment and got a call the next day, and was told to fax in ID and 2 utility bills. I called back again to follow up, and I had to resend one piece, but after I did and called in, they found it (they’ve been getting a ton of faxes she said) they immediately cleared the card. I asked if a note could be put on saying I’d be making large purchases, and she said the fraud department is now well aware that there will be large purchases during this period.

I made a 2.5K and then a 2K a couple hours later. Neither had issues. Unless I hear otherwise, I suspect that those of us that sent in identification are good to go. I’m not sure how I’ll approach this, but I think there is an argument for hitting this hard…. I think they have to know what people are doing, and have decided to allow it for the time being.

How stupid to list that grocery gets 6x. it is clearly unintentional. I would remove that and then delete my comment after for good measure.
