Avoiding Fees
Blue Hill Bank offers a free checking account, the only requirement is that you must open it with at least $10. Their fee schedule says that there is an early account termination fee of $25 if the account is closed within 90 days.
Our Verdict
They have offered a $200 bonus in the past, they used to allow up to $10,000 in credit card funding but that was reduced to $1,000. Still this is a good deal, easy to keep the account fee free and the bonus requirements aren’t too hard either. The $1,000 in credit card funding is just a bonus. Because of these reasons we’ve added this bonus to our list of the best checking account sign up offers.
Big thanks to reader, Pablo who let us know (& reader JJ-Na who was the first to let us know on Twitter!). Please consider sharing bank bonuses with this site so we can make it even better.

Discover did not qualify as a DD for the seaport350 promo code offer from earlier this year’s
just sorting tax forms, no, I did not receive 1099
Anyone get a 1099 from them?
I know this offer is very much expired, but maybe this DP will be useful if Blue Hills does this promotion again:
** The initial $1,000 credit card funding seems to count towards the $2,000 direct deposit requirement. **
I funded the account with $1,000 (forgot which card…) and then only made one $1,000 direct deposit before changing my payment elections with my employer. This morning I had an “oh, sh*t” moment when I realized that Monday will be 60 days since account opening. I was about to do a bill pay via my BofInternet business account to make up the remaining $1,000, when I checked my Blue Hills account… And there it was: Dec 7,2016 CHECKING PROMO BONUS 100.00
(The other $100 had posted back in November)
Neat.
For those who did get approved? Do you guys know how many inquiries you had within the past year or so when right before you applied for this bank account? I might be interested in trying these guys out but I think I have about 12 inquiries or so this past year.
Did Discover ACH work for everyone. I used discover and no bonus yet
Am I correct to assume that you performed the Discover transaction through a Balance transfer? If not, could you please clarify?
Thanks!
Called to close this account, it requires a notarized letter or stopping in a branch. Seems rather difficult to close, but there’s no fee on the account, so I might just leave it open.
Hi Kevin, thanks for the notice, a bit less likely for me to sign up with this bank though I suppose it’s still $200. Were you able to meet the direct deposit requirement somehow and get the $200, and if so, what method? Thanks!
Can anyone else confirm discover ach meets direct deposit requirement. I assume you must do $1,000 twice a month for 2 months to meet the requirement. Thanks in advance
what did you end up using for dd requirement?
Declined. NOTICE OF ACTION BASED ON INFORMATION CONTAINED IN A CONSUMER REPORT
We regret we cannot open your account today due to information received from ChexSystems, Inc., a consumer-reporting agency. ChexSystems did not make the decision to disapprove your account application and is unable to provide you with specific reasons why the decision was made.
Hey, thanks for letting us know. So you got denied because of a ChexSystems report but I was wondering how many bank accounts you opened in the past 12 months or so? Thanks
DP: Tried to fund using US Bank FlexPerks travel rewards. Was declined. Called US Bank, they said Blue Hills was running it as a cash advance (and it was above my CA limit).
