2,500 SPG Points For Adding An Authorized User For American Express Cardholders

The Offer

This direct link should work, even if you didn’t receive the targeted e-mail (look on the left side after logging in)

  • Add an additional person to your Starwoods Preferred Guest card from American Express and receive 2,500 points

The Fine Print

  • The offer for 2,500 Starpoints expires on September 19, 2016.
  • Card Members are limited to one-time receipt of 2,500 Starpoints through this email offer.
  • Bonus points will appear on your Starwood Preferred Guest statement 8-12 weeks after you add an additional Card.
  • You must notify Additional Card Members that we may obtain, provide, and use information about them and that their use of your Account is subject to certain provisions of the Card Member Agreement.
  • The maximum number of Additional Cards issued on each Account is 99.

Our Verdict

There is no fee to add an additional cardholder, just keep in mind authorized user accounts do count towards the Chase 5/24 rule (although it’s sometimes possible to get an exception for authorized users) and American Express do require a SSN. That being said, this is still an easy 2,500 SPG points. American Express also offered a similar bonus for Hilton cards in June and I expect these offers to roll out on all cards eventually. If you get an e-mail about these offers, please contact us with the link as it looks like you don’t actually need to have received the e-mail to get the points.

Hard inquiry for AU?

Will you receive 2500 points for each authorized user you designate on your account??

Is there a credit pull done for authorized user? Also can I add myself as authorized user ony wife’s card and vice versa and get 2.5k points each?

No hard pull for being added as an AU. Giving them the SS # makes it FEEL like there’s a hard pull coming, but there won’t be.

My girlfriend and I add each other as AU’s on every card we get, so you can absolutely do that.

Enjoy the points!

Doesnt seem to work for SPG Business. Oh well.

Just a confirmation. For the Hilton AU offer, I did not receive the email (nor did my wife), but we both added an AU and both got the 10k points within 3-4 days of signing the AU up.

Just a reminder of how Amex handles AUs nowadays: when you add someone as an AU it will show up on their report as a new account with no age.

If we add AU via phone, will that be counted, any DP?

Chuck

I got an error message on my SPG business card. Maybe it’s only for personal? Or targeted?

Does being an AU count against the Amex 4 card limit?

Chuck

No

Is there a minimum age for an AU? Could you add a baby, for example.

this is per Amex T&C:

“All Additional Card Members must be 15 or older, and must never have had a defaulted account with American Express.”

i just called to add my 16 year old daughter and they never asked for her birthday or social. So I added my 12 year old son as well (not realizing at the time that you’d only get the points for one AU). Both were approved by just giving their names. Got the follow up email saying the cards are on their way.

Confirmed this via AMEX Chat: offer not available on SPG Business cards, only on Personal cards.

If I remove a current authorized user then re-add the user through this promo, will it set off any red flags?

Chuck

I think you’ll be fine.

Another idea is that you can add yourself; Amex allows this. (Some people like to separate spend of select purchases so they like to have 2 cards with their name.)

My SO was targeted via email, but I was not. I was not able to sign in to the direct link in this post or the link provided in my SO’s email. I also did not see any special offer when navigating to the area to add an AU on the Amex website. It looks to me like this is really targeted. Not sure why our two accounts are different since we applied on the same day and had pretty much the same spend.

Following up. Not sure why I can’t sign in to the links, but putting my card info in directly worked!
