American Express Revamps Their ‘Rewards’ Tracking Portal And It’s Beautiful

American Express has redesigned their Rewards portal. The new design allows users to easily see how many points are pending from recent purchases. They allow you to see combined points from all cards or to drill it down by the card and the authorized user.

You can access the Rewards portal from within your Amex login or at this direct link (login required).

The rewards detail showing for pending points is terrific! And it’s all done on a line by line basis, with clarity on which merchant is earning bonus rewards. Cashback cards never had the ability to see line by line detail, and even points cards weren’t always easy to see the pending points information.

It’s now easy to test out a retailer and know immediately whether it earns a bonus or not. I also like that there’s a single, uniform portal for cashback and points cards.

A few things that need improvement:

  • While points cards show pending details, cashback cards do not. They only show the line-by-line information from two statements ago and prior. There still is some improvement on that end as it shows your overall ‘Pending’ cashback, just doesn’t show the line by line detail.
  • They only show 12 month of history on points cards and 6 months of history on cashback cards. I wish they show more.
  • I wish they allowed a ‘year to date’ view and ‘past 12 months’ view.
  • I wish they totaled out each months earnings.

This move comes along with Amex switching their system so that Membership Rewards points are issued after statement closes and payment, more on that in this post.

I hate their new website. The points summary section changes daily. Yesterday, my pending points were ~35,000 with about ~6,000 available upon payment. Today, pending points are only 8,000 with about 6,000 available upon payment. I have $5000 in spend that just posted, pending points should be way more. I also can’t view all my points history details- sign up bonus, pay over time bonus, referral. After being annoyed for four weeks, I can conclude the old interface was way better.

I noticed that they claw back points for amex offers. I’m sure they did that before, but I wasn’t aware! (So if you got 10 dollars back, they take 10 worth of points back too, including the bonus points for bonus category spend on offers). That makes the bonus point offers (i.e. spend $200 get 4,000 MR pts) slightly more rewarding than the cashback offers (i.e. spend $200 get $40).

Does it tell you which transactions are considered cash equivalents? 😉

Nice to see how it looks for Points Cards. I noticed the change a few weeks ago, but it only shows up for one of my cashback cards, all other cards show a “Your Points Summary is currently unavailable.”

I wish the cashback cards would show pending/real-time rewards tracking.

kinda seems like this site has turned into a amex publicity cheering section. a $100 B company has finally managed to udpate its website. It’s not innovating mind you, just trying to play catch up.

What are you talking about? We’ve been extremely critical of amex lately.

Wow! Please explain how their recent “Amex claws back self-referrals” post is Amex cheering in anyway…

There’s little, if anything, beautiful about the new portal. Print page doesn’t work, only 15 records show up at a time (especially ridiculous now that every single purchase is a separate record), only 11 full months of history are available (prior portal, which no longer appears to be linked from anywhere, but is still available through a direct URL, doesn’t seem to have any limits on the number of years to see at a time, and printing out of it works great, too).

The only benefit of the new portal is that it lists which card the referral bonus is coming from. In all other aspects, it’s a huge downgrade.

Just wanted to add, that when you reach out to amex to request a points adjustment for missing accelerated rewards, and it’s approved, they don’t just give you the points, they update the system so that any future spending there will track correctly.

If you want to see the old interface for something, the rewards.americanexpress link is still in the (logged in) = Menu -> rewards -> point summary
