Air Canada Finally Offering Full Refunds On COVID-19 Affected Flights

Air Canada has announced that they are now offering full refunds on flights that were affected by COVID-19 since February 2020. This covers all flights that were cancelled by Air Canada or voluntarily cancelled by passengers. This obviously includes people that were previously issued a travel voucher or miles as compensation (full refund replaces these, not in addition to). You must request your full refund by June 13, 2021. In addition for flights booked after April 13th if a flight is cancelled or rescheduled by more than three hours a full refund will be offered.

Absolutely pathetic that it has taken Air Canada this long. The DoT had previously issued two enforcement notices to airlines reminding them of their responsibility to provide refunds cancelled flights and that they must do so in a timely manner, Air Canada claimed that this wasn’t the case at all and they didn’t have to provide a refund. It’s disappointing that the DoT never issued anything other than those enforcement notices.

I submitted a refund request through the website on April 13, 2021. I just received the refund receipt email this morning 4-27-2021 stating the refund will post to the original form of payment.

Surprisingly simple process to complete. I called and was on hold for 15mins before an agent picked up (took 1.5 hours back in Aug to speak to an agent). Agent took the record locator and my info and processed the refund. Took less than 3 minutes.

They always could do this; they chose not to.

Can I please ask for the number you called? I end up in phone tree oblivion or ticket sales (who say they can’t help). Thank you!

It probably doesn’t need to be said on a forum Like this, but the Chargeback is a formidable weapon against merchants refusing to abide by their agreements (or laws in this case). I’ve been on both sides and as someone who works in ecommerce, and this is absolutely a time when it can be used.

Chargeback is also a great way to permanently blacklist yourself with a given merchant, and it should only be used as a last resort.

Caveat emptor.

Submitted the request. Will never fly with them again. Would rather pay more in other US airlines than using air Canada and westjet if I need to go to Canada.

Pretty pathetic. Westjet wasn’t much better. Won’t be using either airline from now on.

Hm, tried to go through the portal and it says they found my booking and redirected me to the front page of the website. I put in my confirmation code + name for my flight, which was scheduled for February 2021 (and was previous canceled for a voucher) and it doesn’t do anything…

Anyone else running into this?
