[AL, FL, TX, AZ, CO, CA, NM] BBVA Select Credit Card – $500 Bonus

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • BBVA is offering a bonus of 50,000 points (worth $500) after $4,000 in spend within the first 90 days on the BBVA Select credit card

Card Details

  • Annual fee of $99 is waived first year
  • Card earns:
    • 4X points on Entertainment,
    • 3X points on Dining,
    • 2X points on Travel
    • 1X point on all other purchases

Our Verdict

Standard offer I think is $100 or $200, we’ve seen as high as $300 in the past. Card isn’t worth keeping long term, but a $500 cash bonus in this climate is very very attractive. BBVA normally always pulls your TransUnion credit report, for most people that’s a good thing as it’s usually the least used bureau for most people.  I’ll add this to our list of the best credit card bonuses.

So we need to apply over phone? We can’t do online apps

Looks like you can also apply over the phone (but only during normal business hours).

Does this bypass the state restrictions?

Alex
Alex

Anyone able to get around the state restriction by already having other accounts with Bbva? Have checking and mm with them currently, and have been able to get bmo Harris credit cards in the same manner, despite their state restrictions.

Once a year passes, how do we go about not paying the second year annual fee, and how may days can we get to PC to another card? Is that possible even?

LBP

Benjamin…You’re asking the question that I want a answer to as well !!! Also what is PC ???

Brian C 🐕

Same as with any card. Call and ask for retention bonus or fee waiver, if that doesn’t work, you cancel the card.

Product change might be a valid option but I’d double check that they refund the fee on those.

Is BBVA sensitive to recent accounts and/or inquiries?

Yes US Bank denied me for this very reason.

I’ve seen mixed DPs regarding it. I’ve been a BBVA customer since I was in high school, so it’s never seemed to affect me.

Hmmm.. this card has price protection..

What, where do you see that

Nevermind, found it, its a Visa Signature benefit

Sam

I have a BBVA bank account. They charge $3 to transfer money to an external account. Anyone know how to bypass this fee. It’s a bit ridiculous.

You have to initiate the transfer from the external account.

Do you know if this works will all banks like us bank for example?

It works with US Bank. I use Discover as my hub and have pulled money from US, BBVA, and others. No fees charged yet.

I do the exact same thing. BBVA is my main checking account, Discover is my hub. The fee only applies if the ACH pull/push originates in the BBVA account.

I called and apparently these are only done in branch!

I applied over the phone. I do already have BBVA checking/savings so that could be a factor.

Hmm. I also have those accounts. I’ll try again. What phone number did you use? Did you select open a credit card or something else?

1-844-BBVA USA and yes, follow prompts for open a new credit card account.

Thanks!!! My first call was a cold call so that might be why I was directed to a branch. I called back on that number and entered my acct no and got a human. They had to transfer me to a CC rep who was very helpful. He asked for name, SSN, and phone number. He will send me the docusign to fill out. I did confirm the bonus verbally. He could not access his system to get the T&C after 10 minutes. I guess this is a revamped product and the computer was down. Fingers crossed.

As an aside, what awful tech! I’m surprised anyone in this country is willing to do business with certain banks (looking at you BoA and USB). There is no online app. BBVA has you enter your account number but doesn’t pass it along to the CSR. It also asks for your PIN and gives you all of 3 seconds to type it in before it yells at you. No “need more time” opt or “I forgot it.” Offers a call back and then won’t take it. You have to select a time between 1-10 hours for example and confirm it. Central time mind you! Well I did it 3 times and each time it said invalid! WTF? I could have been connected to an agent in that much time. Thankfully it did put me back on hold and didn’t hang up as I feared it would. So the first rep certainly got an earful from me! Unbelievable!

Called and CSR said he is currently working at home and couldn’t process the application unless I can sign some documents to get authentication. Will pass.

I applied over the phone. Rep got my info and sent a prefilled application via email which I signed digitally. It was pretty painless.

Do you think if the rep you worked with is a person in your local branch or is from their call center?

What state do you live in?

Strange that it says this:

“Only Available in Alabama, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Colorado, California, and New Mexico”

but then in the details it says this:

“New York Residents: Your ‭credit report may be obtained….” and also mentions Delaware and Ohio.

Parts Unknown

Standard legalese. Also, very possible to be a resident of New York & spend the winters in AZ/CA/FL/TX/NM, so you could present yourself in branch to apply but legally be a resident of NY…

Anyone know when this expires? Trying to squeeze in one last Chase slot before I finally go 5/24

Can you reduce your cash advance limit with BBVA?

Lord Dima

Any DPs on BBVA’s “memory” of previous shut downs? Got my NBA CC shu down years ago (barely even MS’d it) and was able to open checking/savings combo late last year. Online login still shows the shutdown cc account 🤔

vc

my defaulted card from…wait for it…fourteen years ago… shows on my acct. i had forgotten all about it til i opened a ck/sav a few months ago and it said that i had a login. they were compass when i had them…fourteen years ago. they paid my ck/sav bonus, though.

AL_PF
AL_PF

They always do that for whatever reason. I still see the credit card I opened when I was 18 that was closed nearly a decade ago when I log in. Same thing with an old savings account that I closed.

FYI – outside of the states listed but currently have checking account w/ BBVA – attempted to apply over the phone and rep stated that BBVA does not offer the Select credit card in my state.
