Amazon $30 off $60 when Using MR Points, Works on Gift Cards [Targeted]

Update 7/4/19: Expiration showing as 12/31/19 now.

Update 6/30/19: Another round has been targeted. Not sure how this works with the other 20% off deal ($50 maximum discount). Might make sense to do that deal first if you are targeted for both. Hat tip to reader Agustin

Update 5/16/19: Looks like another round of people has been targeted. Worth checking if you weren’t eligible last time.

Update 3/22/19: Looks like another round of people has been targeted. Worth checking if you weren’t eligible last time.

Update 1/22/19: According to this comment the deal can be done a second time by using an Amazon business account as well. Also works a second time on household account.

The Offer

Direct Link to offer (this post contains our affiliate link)

  • Get $30 off $60 on Amazon.com purchases when using Amex Membership Rewards shop-with-points

You can even use a single Amex Membership Rewards point and still get the $30 discount, and the deal works on gift cards too! The left image below is from a $60 AirBnB electronic gift card and the right image below is from $100 Whole Foods physical gift card:

Here’s how to go about doing this deal:

  1. Link your Amex Membership Rewards account to your Amazon account if you haven’t already
  2. Click to Activate this offer to your Amazon account here
  3. Add $60 or more of eligible products shipped and sold by Amazon to your shopping cart
  4. Proceed to checkout & select your Amex Rewards Card as your payment method
  5. Select the amount of Membership Rewards Points you’d like to use for the purchase (must use points for at least $.01 of the purchase)
  6. Up to a $30 discount off $60 will be automatically applied at checkout; no promo code needed

The Fine Print

  • This is a limited time offer. The promotion will end at 11:59 PT on 12/31/2019. The promotion code will expire concurrently. Amazon.com reserves the right to cancel or modify this offer at any time.
  • Offer is available by invitation only, is non-transferable, is not redeemable for cash, and may not be resold.
  • Offer applies only to the purchase of at least $60 of eligible products, where Membership Rewards points are used for at least a portion of the purchase and the promotion code is entered at checkout. Taxes, gift-wrap, and shipping and handling charges do not apply when determining minimum purchase amount.
  • The maximum benefit you may receive from this offer is $30 per eligible Membership Rewards enrolled Card.
  • Offer is not available to American Express Membership Rewards eligible cards whose points have been previously used for purchases at Amazon.com in the past twelve months.
  • Offer only applies to eligible products shipped and sold by Amazon.com.
  • Limit one promotion code per Membership Rewards eligible card.
  • Offer may not be combined with other offers.
  • Shipping charges may apply to discounted promotional items.
  • Offer does not apply to the purchase of digital content.
  • To redeem the offer, you must be logged into an account which has been active for 30 days or longer.
  • Offer discount will be allocated proportionally among all promotional items in your original order. If any of the items in your original order are subsequently returned, your refund will equal the original price of the product, less the proportional amount of the discount. The total discount on the unreturned amount of your original order will then be less than $30.
  • If any of the products related to your original order are returned, subject to Amazon’s refund policy, you will receive a refund of the card amount first, followed by Membership Rewards points.
  • romotional codes (including those placed directly in accounts) may not be redeemed for Amazon Gift Cards.
  • This promotion is available only to Amazon.com customers with an eligible American Express card issued in the United States.

Our Verdict

Great deal, surprised to see it again so soon. Expiration date is December 31st, 2019 so I doubt we will get the deal a second time this year (we got it twice (or three times really) last year).

Wow, this is the gift that just keeps on giving. Got a $60 Safeway e-gift card for half off. As a reminder, make the Amex card your default payment option before checking out if you want to pay with an Amazon gift card balance.

Exactly same here; even was able to use gift card balance for the 29.99

Did not work for me. The AMEX card is set as the default payment but at check out it would not let me use GC balance. Change it to GC balance the point usage option grayed out.
I do remember at least once in 2017 or early 2018, I was able to use the Amazon GC balance despite the balance is many times more of the $29.99 final total

Avi

So strange, not sure why that’s happening.

Did you go all the way to the final check out, i.e. place order page, chose GC, then went back to payment method to pick the AMEX as default, thus allowed you to use the 0.01 as point payment?
I knew I was able to do it once in the past after some posts mentioned about a trick. But could not remember the details. So this time I cannot make it work.
Was the above description the right steps?

On a separate note – the Business Plus card would not show MR balance, saying I need to call AMEX. Switched to Gold card it immediately showed the MR balance.
However I definitely have successfully added Business Plus card before. I unrolled it after deals. Dont want to leave CC on AMZN server.

When I say “default,” I mean the default payment method for your entire Amazon account, not the payment for this particular purchase. Leave your cart and go to your Amazon account’s saved credit cards. Find your Amex card there, and click on the little down arrow to the right of it. That will reveal your name and billing address, and below that there’s a link to “Use this card across all Amazon.” Click on that, and then “Update.” Now go back to your cart and you should be able to use your gift card balance to pay the $29.99.

Thank you Avi. I tried the process today and it worked! Too bad the $30 discount does not show up again.
The Business Plus card that gave me a message to contact AMEX yesterday, is successfully enrolled today but does not generate the $30 discount.
Wonder if removing the Gold card from yesterday would trigger another $30 discount?

That trick worked for me. However, it wouldn’t allow me to pay with my AMZN GC balance. I could only pay with my MR card if I wanted the $30 off. Eh, $30 is still pretty good.

Added a link to post about how to use gc.

There’s a post here on how to do that. I only paid 1 point, but not a cent with MR-earning card. It was better for me to buy Amazon GCs using my Hilton Honors card because of the 13 points per dollar promo

In the past I’ve been able to use this offer and pay with Amazon GC. The way around it is to hold off “pre-loading” your GC’s and pay the 1 point in this offer and “add” the GC at the end as payment.

It happened to me on the phone so I gave up. Went to use the laptop and I was able to use the GC balance. Not sure why.

Did you first link the amex card to you account (this is different from adding the card as a payment method)?

Amazon allows you to buy Whole Foods GC with Amazon GC. That’s quite a surprise to me.

Shouldn’t be suprising as it is same Company but I just bought Nordstrom gift GC with Amazon GC

It’s surprising because you can’t buy Amazon GC with an Amazon GC, so if Whole Foods is part of Amazon it reads that you shouldn’t be able to buy WF GC with an Amazon GC. But i guess it’s not coded as such (or the systems just see WF GC as a regular 3rd party GC)

can you use the whole foods giftcard @ amazon.com??

I will try and let you know.

No, you can’t use whole foods giftcard on Amazon, not even on Amazon-WholeFoods delivery service

Whole Foods is a separate entity. You can’t use Amazon gift card at Whole Foods and vice versa.

This is just begging for Amex to review your account.

Are you guessing, or do you know that this has happened? I am aware of people getting claw backs for the cash back on special offers, but Im hoping this is different

Subhuman-Male
Subhuman-Male

This isn’t an Amex offer, so Amex won’t claw back. Not sure about an Amazon review, though. But then Amazon is poorly managed, so I wouldn’t worry.

I don’t agree. Plenty of people do this for well over a year. Never heard of it any problems.

Eddy Cue

Has that been working for you? ie using the same card on different Amazon accounts to get the discount? Weird that it works if so

How were you targeted? received an email? or checked somewhere? I checked 2 accounts using the link in steps above. it says am not eligible. thinking if it is worth to login in my other amazon accounts to check this way.
