The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • American Airlines has a loyalty program for businesses called Business Extra. The idea is that you register your employees and they continue to earn their standard miles & perks and as a business you also earn Business Extra points. They are celebrating their 20th anniversary and as part of that they have an offered for new and existing members:
    • Become a member, use promo code BX20UPGWELCOME and fly within 30 days to receive 650 bonus points. Valid until December 31st, 2017
    • Existing members can get 650 points when they register using code BX20UPG2 and fly between September 7th and October 31st, 2017

The Fine Print

  • New members must enroll in the Business Extra program between February 22, 2017 and December 31, 2017 and use the BX20UPGWELCOME referral code during enrollment. Company must complete a minimum of one (1) qualifying flight within 30 days of enrolling in the Business Extra program.
  • Existing members: In order to qualify for the 650 bonus point offer, members must register using code BX20UPG2 and fly using their Business Extra number between September 7, 2017 and October 31, 2017. Qualifying companies may earn a maximum of 650 bonus points via this offer. Cannot be combined with other Business Extra promotional offers.

Our Verdict

You can see what you can redeem these points for here. They are much more valuable then regular American Airline miles, for example a flight within North America is 2,000 points. An admirals club day pass will set you back 300 points. A one segment upgrade within North America or between North America & Hawaii/Caribbean costs exactly 650 points. It’s definitely worth signing up if you have a business. Points earned expire on a rolling basis. The points you earn this year will expire on Dec in 2 years. They don’t extend expiry by earning more. Each point has their own expiry date. Thanks to reader hiima for the info.

Quick question for anyone out there who’s familiar with AA’s Business Extra:

If I give my business extra code to some friends/family, will they be able to successfully credit to my account? Or is it just for employees?

If so, can I count family as employees?

Yes, you can have ANYONE add it to their profile and get credit for their flights. and this doesn’t impact their normal earning of AA miles.

does it have to be revenue flight to count for the promo? I have an upcoming award flight on AA, wonder if by any chance it’ll count…

You should note that points earned expire on a rolling basis. The points you earn this year will expire on Dec in 2 years. They don’t extend expiry by earning more. Each point has their own expiry date.
The BXP1 upgrades don’t work on discount economy fares, BNOQS. They work perfectly if you want to upgrade from lowest biz fare on a transcon flight to F.
The PlanAhead awards are the same buckets as saver award which are hard to find now. The Anytime awards are anytime awards.
You have to call business extra line for any upgrades and redemptions and they are not 24 hours.

I signed up for this earlier this year and I must say with all of these special promotions, the points really do add up. If I get credit for this one, this will be my 3rd promotion of 650 points. The good thing is that it appears to be retroactive for flights. I received the 650 pts for a promotion that I fulfilled in August although I didn’t register until September. I had flights planned for September to fulfill the promotion requirements and they posted already.

Any business owner should sign up for this since it’s free and you earn points for every dollar spent. Most of the promotions this year have been just take one flight to fulfill which can be fulfilled with cheap flights purchased through AA. I fulfilled these requirements by purchasing 2 cheap flights for a vacation. (LAX to Vegas)

There are extra hoops to jump through to use the points, but well worth it especially with the lack of saver AAward space. Probably easier to just book a coach flight with certain pts and upgrade to first/business class.

IIRC, there are some fine print rules which state that bulk fares(ie citi points) or other travel agencies may not allow you to earn the Business Extra pts. However, it appears that my Citi Thank You pts flight appears to have earned me pts. Consider that a YMMV.

For those unfamiliar with the redemption options for the program, the one segment upgrade BXP1 is considered the best value since it costs 650 pts and is enough to upgrade one domestic flight one class. Great value for those LAX-JFK flights. Consider these like more limited SWUs. I havent used my Business Extra pts yet so I may be wrong about the usage of these.

Perhaps a silly question but, would award flights count as a qualifying flight?

Last time I looked at Business Extra, i rememebr not opting for it because it didn’t seem worth the money. Now I can’t seem to find any info on it regarding a cost (nor do I see anything saying it is free).

Can you confirm, is Business Extra free? or yo do you have to pay some kind of subscription cost?

It’s totally free. Rewards aren’t going to amount to much of anything unless you’re spending $10k+ but once you’ve tagged your AA number in the system that’s all you need.
