I don’t usually post about airline award space because this blog is generally for consumer credit news, but I know a lot of you are looking to go to the World Cup in Brazil. American Airlines has just freed up a whole heap of space and there is now a lot of availability for Economy MileSAAver fares. This means that for only 30,000 AA miles you can fly one way to Brazil + taxes/fees.
Here is what I found with a brief one minute search:
For those wanting to go to Brazil, your main problem is going to be finding affordable accommodation. Even dorm room accommodation on sites like Hostel World/Bookers is either completely unavailable or costing more than $40 per night for a shared accommodation in the less than desirable neighborhoods of Lapa (in Rio).
You may be able to find better lodging on sites such as Air BnB, Brazilian cities are used to having a massive influx of tourists for Carnival, so a lot of residents will be renting out their homes during the world cup and using the money to go on holidays elsewhere. I was able to find a beautiful three bedroom place in Santa Teresa (right by Lapa, has a bit of a bad reputation as being dangerous but I never felt unsafe during my time there. In fact we were often invited by others in our hill to join them at the blockades/join in on their delicious BBQ’s) for only $110 a night.
