Our Verdict

This bonus was offered last in mid February of this year, but the spending requirement as lower ($5,000 within first three and then an additional $3,000 within the first six months), the time before that it had an even lower minimum spend requirement of just $5,000 total. That being said it’s still a 35,000 point bonus on an SPG card so I do think it’s worth considering if you’re eligible as the standard bonus is 25,000 and I’m not confident we will see anything bigger than 35,000 in the near future/ever.

I find SPG points to be very valuable. They are obviously useful for redeeming for hotels (and the cost in points is much different than other chains like Hilton) and can be transferred to airline partners at a 1:1 rate and also to Marriott at a 1:3 rate. You can view the best uses of SPG points here.

If you’ve recently signed up for this card, ask to be matched with American Express. For more tips on American Express and to get any questions you might have answered please read this post. Keep in mind you’re not eligible for this bonus if you’ve received the card before. I don’t see any increased sign up bonus on the personal version of this card unfortunately. The biggest problem for most people will be hitting the minimum spend requirement, especially considering manufactured spending on American Express cards is ill-advised. If you can hit the minimum spend requirements then this is a bonus definitely worth doing if you can make use of the SPG points, because of that I’ll be adding it to the best business credit card offers.

There (should be) no danger in MSing to meet min spend on this card, correct? That issue with Amex was really only tied to the leaked links?

Not necessarily:

Also, if you follow the article link AmEx is adding terms making it easier for them to suspend, freeze, confiscate, otherwise mess with your MR account. So not limited to the leaked links.

Already DPs of SPG bonuses being held back for MS.

Justin – Did you accidentally skimmed over the part in the article where it states: “manufactured spending on American Express cards is ill-advised”, or were you accidentally dropped on the head as a child?

I just want to thank you Dave for being such an amazing part of the community here on doctor of credit. I for one sure do value your efforts to post relevant and helpful content in your comments, mostly in regards to the sheer respect and tact you present when addressing other members. I think I speak for everyone when I say, please, continue these helpful and thorough responses.

Dave, you are really giving other guys named Dave, a bad name.

Perfect! I was just looking for a business card to sign up for and SPG was the top of the list.

This could well be the last opportunity to get the elevated offer on the SPG biz. Maybe again next spring.

Or hopefully Marriott decides to keep the program intact and/or takes everything from the SPG program and makes it part of the new Marriott program. I still find it hard to believe Amex is going to let SPG go, which would mean acquiring the Marriott business. I think it is easier for Chase to let that go than Amex, so would expect Amex to bid whatever it takes.

Thanks for the update, DoC.

Ban this guy. This is NOT a referral thread idiot.

Does the referral award both the person doing the referral and the recipient? Is it 7,500 points just like the person SPG?

Only the person doing the referring gets the 7500 referral points. The person who gets referred only gets the 35000 from the linked offer.

If only they offered some sort of free anniversary night.

You get two night stays credit against gold/platinum status. To me that is better than a free night. If you travel for leisure having to make 2 less stays a year is significant.

Can you elaborate on this? I have a spg personal, thinking of getting a marriott.

the short web addresses that begin give a message of being referred. the long address shows no such message. how do you generate the link?

When I open my account, select my business card, and then look under “Useful Links,” which is on the right-hand side, there is a link called “Refer Friends. Get Rewarded.” After clicking on that, the shortened link is toward the bottom of the screen under “or refer by other channels.” It’s next to the Facebook and Twitter icons. That’s one way it works for me at least, so hopefully it works for you too.

This looks like one for the Best Current Credit Card Signup bonuses page! (Probably Citi Business AA 60k too).

Thanks for the heads up Will. Approved and excited!

Great bonus, but $6k in the first three month is a bit to steep for me. Would love to see a personal offer with $3-5k spend requirement.

American Express and these darn 10k spending requirements. My GF has the 7,500 referral so no better time than now to make this happen, I guess. 42,500 SPG after referral is pretty lovely. Going to have too many (lol) Marriott 7 day certificates!

Oh, not to mention got another 7,500 coming from SPG AU… a good year in SPG so far.

I’ve used paypal to send money to my friends and family as purchase for service and goods and have paid the 3% fee to meet some rewuired spending but never with American Express, do they view paypal the same as MS? I wouldnt think so since many paypal purchases Ive done are legit.

do venmo not paypal and youll be fine

Used and approved 🙂

10k MSR tho…

If one were to take advantage of your offer, how would we reach you?
