American Express Increased Benefits Now Live (Purchase Protection & Extended Warranty)

It hasn’t been a great day, Discover announced they would be removing price protection and American Express is cracking down on American Express offers. In some better news American Express has improved two benefits today:

Not huge changes, but sometimes you just need to celebrate the little wins.

It doesn’t have Return Protection. Other than that, it has all standard Amex benefits.

I have few questions related to this . TIA

1) Does Purchase protection work on discounted (sale prices) or only on full retail prices ( Like in price protection)
2) If one pc to another cc then what would happen to both of these benefits? Will they still be valid on the PCed card or lapse?
3) Lastly if have to choose between Chase Freedom/FU or Amex plat for purchase, which one choose(Keeping % back aside.

Thanks

How many products have a manufacturer’s original warranty of two years or more? In order to get the two years of extra coverage your product’s original warranty needs to be at least two years. Citibank gives you an additional two years regardless of the original warranty’s length. This is hardly a deal.

Most of my appliances have three year warranties. These are the things I would imagine would be the most beneficial for extended warranties.

We bought a new Samsung stove Nov. 2016 and we had to have the control board replaced under warranty five months later – was shocked that warranty was only 1 year P&L which I’m learning is now pretty standard, didn’t give it much thought at the time but our older appliances also had fewer if any computers/connected parts. May PC to a Citi Costco card when we remodel the Kitchen – will depend on the kitchen set deals where I can use AMEX -never used AMEX for warranty but Costco standard extended – but is even better with Costco citi card.

Put some portion of a car purchase on the card. Get 2 years additional manufacturer warranty for up to that amount.

LOL, next closest thing to that last month, we meet MSR on Chase CIU Biz, we paid for the Extended warranty on a new PHEV Hybrid.

The battery is under 10kW so we get a $4K Fed tax credit, plus $1.5K from Oregon. 74mo @ 0% and $700 below invoice through Costco Auto program, as well as about $3K in other rebates. Bonus spending $550 CB or $825 UR with CSR.

Felt a little bad that I still left $326 in net dealer profit on the table – honestly I would rather deal with attorneys and car dealers than with Insurance adjuster’s (daughter was rear-ended in May – and still be given the run-around).

The 2yr extended warranty is real good. Get ur iPhone or MacBook fixed up to 3 yes after purchase.

But still doesn’t make up for the offers news.

Eh, look at what extended warranties cost normally. Not much. Now tack on a massive PITA trying to get them to honor a claim as these programs are usually run by third parties that are incentivized to control cost. The value is negligible unless you are a huge (ab)user of these and that is another matter entirely as they track that too.

Its actually insanely easy to get a claim processed and approved with AMEX Assurance. I did one for my nest a year ago, they refunded the entire purchase as Nest said it could not be fixed and had to be replaced. I simply sent a screenshot of the email correspondence i had with nest and filled out the form and a few days later the money was refunded to my card. This was about 23 months after purchase.

I have a washing machine i bought September 2016 that has a leak. My biggest issue right now is finding an authorized repairman to come fix it. Once i do, AMEX will reimburse me the entire cost of the repair up to the original cost of the washer. Best part is i can pay for that repair with any card (even non-AMEX) and still get whatever points i want (small thing, but still kind of cool).

I can also confirm that on a purchase protection where i lost an item in to the ocean, AMEX reimbursed me for AND i checked and the AMEXOffer i had received just under 3 months prior still showed months later, they did not claw it back.

So ya….AMEX benefits are actually worthwhile and easy to utilize if you know how. Just following instructions, know your benefits and purchase wisely. I ALWAYS purchase anything i might lose easily with my AMEX Plat and anything i want to have a good warranty for (appliance) on any AMEX card.

Anyway, just my experience….

I’ve also had nothing but good experiences with Amex and their purchase protection and their warranty. I dropped my iPhone in a puddle less than three months after I bought it on Amex. Called them, submitted the info and had a credit in less than 2 weeks. The warranty took a little longer just a few months ago, only because I had to get the forms via snail mail. Still, a credit was issued only a week after all the materials were sent. Saved me on a $465 repair to my refrigerator.

Extended warranties like square trade aren’t expensive but no money OOP for a credit card extended warranty is right up my alley.

Wow this is a big deal. Those are great improvements. Does this apply to ALL amex cards (including Blue cash or just MR cards)?

Is there any point in having a discover now? AMEX does everything they do and better
