Unfortunately it seems like the American Express Old Blue Cash card is being discontinued and will be force converted to the Blue Cash Everyday® Card. BlahBlahNyborg on Bogleheads forum received the following notice on the bottom of their Old Blue Cash statement:
We are discontinuing the Blue Cash Card. As a result, your Card will be changed automatically on March 4, 2027, to the Blue Cash Everyday® Card and we will be making changes to your American Express Card Member Agreement (Agreement) as referenced in this notice. We encourage you to read this notice, share it with Additional Card Members on your account, and file it for future reference.
You will receive your new Card within 30 days after your account is changed to the Blue Cash Everyday Card. You may continue to use your existing Card until your new Card arrives.
For those not familiar the Old Blue Cash has the following earning structure:
- 5% back on select categories (grocery stores, drugstores, and gas stations) on up to $50,000, but the first $6,500 earns at a lower rate.
Whereas the Blue Cash Everyday earns:
- 3% back on gas, grocery and U.S. online retailer purchases on up to $6,000
The Old Blue Cash stopped taking new applications on February 6, 2018 and wasn’t publicly visible for some time before that. This card brings up a lot of memories, R.I.P to a real one.
