American Express Platinum Card Now Gives Two Guests Free Access To Priority Pass Lounges

The American Express Platinum card has just announced a number of significant benefits (and an increase to the annual fee to $550). This card also comes with a Priority Pass membership, Priority Pass memberships from credit card issuers vary with some giving unlimited guest access and some giving no guest access.

Previously the American Express Platinum card allowed you to bring guests, but you were charged $27 per guest. On February 21st this benefit was improved and you’re now allowed to bring two guests with you free of charge. I’ve confirmed this benefit change, but I’m unsure why it wasn’t communicated to cardholders and why it wasn’t mentioned in the recent list of benefit additions.

My Amex Platinum benefit terms still state that I will be charged for all guests:

Priority Pass™ Select
These Terms and Conditions govern Platinum Card Members’ participation in and use of the Priority Pass™ Select program. Priority Pass is an independent airport lounge access program. By enrolling in Priority Pass Select, you agree that you will be responsible for all accompanying guest visits and will be automatically charged $27 per guest to your Platinum Card® from American Express after you have signed for the visit and it has been reported to Priority Pass by the participating lounge. Additionally, you acknowledge and agree that American Express will verify your Card account number and provide updated Card account information to Priority Pass. Priority Pass will use this information to fulfill on the Priority Pass Select program and may use this information for marketing related to the program. Once enrolled, Platinum Card Members in good standing may access participating Priority Pass Select lounges by presenting your Priority Pass Select card and airline boarding pass. In some lounges, Priority Pass Select member must be 21 years of age to enter without a parent or guardian. Priority Pass Select members must adhere to all house rules of participating lounges. Amenities may vary among airport lounge locations. Conference rooms, where available, may be reserved for a nominal fee. Priority Pass Select lounge partners and locations are subject to change. All Priority Pass Select members must adhere to the Priority Pass Conditions of Use, which will be sent to you with your membership package, and can be viewed at http://www.prioritypass.com. Upon receipt of your enrollment information, Priority Pass will send your Priority Pass Select card and membership package which you should receive within 10–14 business days. If you have not received the Priority Pass card after 14 days, please contact American Express using the number on the back of your American Express® Card. Please note, Additional Gold Card Members are not eligible for membership.

These changes just feel so Luke warm for the business traveler. I spend 200+ nights a year in hotels and never ever do a prepaid hotel booking. We need the flexibility, so this is. It a benefit for us. Our taxi/Uber is reimbursed for work, so this is not a benefit for us. We almost always travel alone, so this really isn’t a benefit for us either. All I really see is the enhancement of $100 fee. After all, this is THE card for us right? Definitely reconsidering keeping it.

I don’t understand how the Uber credit is not a bonus in your scenario. Of course your company reimburses you AND you get the statement credit. So it goes into your pocket as cash.

The Uber credit will be delivered in-app as an account credit, not as a statement credit.

If work allows you to use your personal card for Uber and get reimbursed they should reimburse you the value of the credits, so you should be able to use that? Of course if they want you using the corporate card you’re out of luck

I also called Amex and they confirmed this new Priority Pass benefit won’t start until March 30th, 2017 along with all of the other benefits. Please double-check your sources as this could be costly to your readers.

Fair point and people should call about their own accounts, but FWIW when I called Amex about this question, the rep looked up my account and specifically called out Feb. 21 as the date my PP benefit was “upgraded” to cover the two guests. My guess, but it’s only that, is that existing cardholders who get charged for a guest between now and March 30 will have recourse to get the charge reversed over the phone or by chat.

What about delta lounges? Also a secret new benefit??

PointsYak

@AskAmex is saying the PP 2 free guest policy becomes effective 3/30. Where did you get the February 21 info?

Chris
Chris

I got that info myself over the phone from Amex. YMMV.

PointsYak

Ok, Amex phone reps are typically good, but I’d be wary of that info.

PointsYak

@Chris, I just wanted to circle back with you. I checked with PP directly. My account shows 2 free guests as of Feb 9. Based on our 2 data points, it looks like Amex may be rolling this out slowly to existing Plats. So, you can probably be comfortable with your Feb 21 info.

Appreciate the additional info. Very cool. As much as I like this development, I personally won’t get to use the benefit much, since I almost always travel solo, and when I have company it’s other people who already have PP via my AU cards on that platinum account. Thanks.

Your post prompted me to go ahead and call PP, duh, and they also confirmed for me that the two free guests are part of my membership.

Is this change just for the personal card, like the other changes yesterday, or for the business card as well? Thx for great site.

I have the plat biz and I called PP and they confirmed it was upgraded to the 2 guest policy.

That is interesting. Maybe a sign that the biz plat will be soon to follow with the entire upgrade. Or maybe Priority Pass just wasn’t willing to separate the personal and biz plats. Fine for us biz plat holders. 🙂

Are there any changes to the guest policy for Delta Sky Clubs?

Nathan

Is there anything a current platinum cardholder needs to do for the PP to allow for the 2 guests? Will we receive a new card or is it just updated and no action is needed?

Props to DoC for being AmEx’s better PR lol

Prestige has upgraded to unlimited guests without notice. I think it’s been a while.

Does the PP upgrade benefits only apply for Amex Personal Plat (and their other flavors e.g., mercedes benz), or does it also apply for Amex Biz Plat?

All the enhancements mentioned recently seem to strictly only relates to Amex Personal Plat (and not even other flavors or biz card), so just wanna confirm

They have sent a mailer right now talking about all the new benefits. It doesn’t mention anything about the complimentary access.

Will we be mailed new Priority Pass cards or do we keep using the old ones until this upgrade?

I called in the other day and they told me this perk starts March 30th. Any way to get it in writing that it has begun before than / where do you see it on your account?

Still shows the ‘Guests may enter with you for a fee of $27 per person. ‘ language on the sign up page (https://rewards.americanexpress.com/olet/splash?campaignId=plpp0401&offerType=platinumprioritypass) and it lets me check ‘agree to the Terms and Conditions above’.

Is this just outdated webpage or is this a wrong place to sign up?
