American Express Serve Shutdown: Round #4

Back in January American Express started sending out e-mails letting people know that they would no longer be able to add funds to their account due to unusual usage patterns. Not everybody’s accounts were shut down, but since then the same shut downs have occurred to another two sets of people. American Express have just sent out another round of shut down e-mails.

There are a few theories as to why certain cards might still be active, one is keeping an active balance on the card at all times (e.g not just depositing and withdrawing funds) might help. Honestly at this stage, I don’t have a lot of hope for anybody that still has their accounts open. Whatever you’re doing is working (mine were certainly shut down long ago). Feel free to speculate in the comments below.

Do you guys know how to get the balance out of the account after shut down? Can you still make payment to credit card?

You can still withdraw funds any way you were before (billpay, swipe, etc.). You just can’t load funds.

Serve onevip got shutdown today, the wife’s is still open. I switched cc loading from fidelity amex to Wells Fargo amex, and the wife cc loads from wells Fargo amex. That is the only difference. We both withdrew $500 via ach once, added funds via ach a few times, and withdrew using billpay to pay credit card bills, utility bills, and our mortgage. Only difference is that I switched credit cards, and she is using the first card she linked to her account. She’ll apply for a new Wells amex and Link it for minspend bonus and I’ll let ya know what’s up.

My serve one VIP was shut down today. I used a few different amex cards to load it. So lame!

My Serve VIP got the ax during the first round of closures. Frankly, once the load and withdraw feature was tapped as “negative pattern activity” I can’t imagine why anyone would care to have a Serve card. That was the only feature which made it worth the trouble. My Walmart still sells MO’s for 69 cents, so while it’s a bit more trouble, I can still flip those Meta Bank VCG’s I buy in bulk at Simon Malls. I have deposited in excess of $50,000 in MO’s in the last year without any problems. I have a business bank account however, so perhaps it doesn’t seem unusual as it would in a personal account. As a side note, the $15 instant rebate deal for purchasing at least $300 of Meta Bank VCG’s at OM/OD was a bust. I have both stores in my city and neither had any $100 or $200 VCG cards and the manager told me that the $20-$500 variable load cards are cash only. Bummer. Anyone out there have some interesting MSing tips?

YMMV with OM/OD. All the OM/ODs in my area have closed down, but I happened to be in the Detroit area this week. I found variable $20-$200 VGCs there. The cashier said I might not be able to use a credit card, so I said let’s try it. Worked like a charm — $600 worth of VGCs for $590.85, plus close to 3000 UR points.

Our cards have not been shut down. Been putting normal spend on them and keeping $1500 balance on each. Been loading about 1-2k/week of vgcs at Walmart.

Brant, MO’s for 69 cents at WM for what amount MO?

aLSO sIMON mALL vgc’S DO NOT have your name on the card………still you can do MO’ at WM without any issues?

Radster

WM MO’s are $1k max. Pay fee in cash and ask to pay remaining with two debit cards ($500 on each).

Regarding no name on the VGC’s… very much YMMV. If they deny you, apologize and move-on (to a different Walmart).

Good luck!

My Bluebird got shut down first round.

Brant – I got shut down doing MOs at Walmart Last year. Although one Walmart did seem to be willing to override. (my fallback plan if current MO casher stops)

Getting worried might get trapped with $10k in GCs if current MO casher stops. Same store in another state wouldn’t do any MOs for me. One of same stores within 10 miles will do MOs other won’t. So temperamental. One store yes. One store no. Even in Same store One employee yes. One employee no. One employee needs my SS card. Another not. Oh well…

I opened Bluebird in July, but couldn’t open Serve. Don’t know why.

if i got shut down in the first wave… is it worth opening one again? will it even work?
i don’t mind getting shut down after a few months if i can liquidate a bunch of gift cards in the meantime.

yes it’ll work but your problem is will they allow you to register using same SSN, addy, phone#, etc? so far all reports says no one has been approved using same SSN which means they blacklisted SSNs that have been shutdown. your best bet is ask your family member to open an account and let you manage it, that is IF they were not also shutdown.

Ive had my Serve VIP since January. Only use it to load from my BBVA Compass CC for $1000 month. Havent been shut down yet.

Bluebird was shut down in round two. Got a serve on spouses account shortly after. I don’t yet have an everyday spend card so I use the serve. Have gone over balance once and generally keep 1k+ in there. Not shut down.

I currently have both bluebird and serve and neither have been shut down, I’m actually thinking about adding the redcard into my repitoir for just for more amex offers (even though they have sucked recently). I always do monthly $1000 cc loads (used to use fidelity now bbva NBA) and I mix bill pay and some regular purchases, I also recently started using it for debit card loads to meet bank requirements. I do occasionally do debit (vgc) POS loads but I don’t go overboard with it. I also pretty much always have atleast few dollars in the accounts.

im not seeing where you can do amex offers on a redcard?
