American Express Shuts Down Some People’s Card Accounts [Reinstating Some Accounts]

Update 11/18/21: According to Frequent Miler some people have been able to get their accounts reinstated by paying a $25 fee. I don’t see how that makes any sense at all.

Original post: The past few days we’ve seen many reports on a wave on American Express card shut downs. The common thread has been that people who signed up for a specific lifetime-limit-bypassing 150k Business Platinum offer through a certain dedicated Amex rep is getting shut down. This rep would apparently easily offer out this special offer, even when he wasn’t supposed to do so, in order to earn a commission.

Now, Amex is coming after those who signed for that card and shutting down all of their AmEx cards. Even those who got the Business Platinum card only once are getting shut down. I imagine there must be some filter to avoid shutting down non-churners who signed up ordinarily, but – in any case – many members of the churning community have been shut down the past few days.

We’ll have to see if this develops further…

How about my cat.gif Amex? You can make easily $1m from an auction at opensea. All I want is $1000 loaded to the card you reinstate.

FM’s post isn’t correct. Amex is saying there’s a $25 fee per charge card to reinstate. No charge for regular ccards. So if you have 10 charge cards that get reinstated, that’s $250 in fees. Whether those fees actually are assessed remains to be seen. Also not all cards are getting reinstated, and not all accounts are getting even a single card reinstated.

Can I just pay Amex $25 and they leave my account the frak alone for at least 5 years?

Would there still be a shutdown risk if I am getting targeted emails? Both my spouse and I keep getting targeted offers via email- and sometimes it also pops up when we login online- for 150k points on $15k spend for the Business Plat. We have both had the card before (not currently though) and the offer doesn’t include the lifetime language. That’s a pretty good deal, I just wonder based on this post if it’s safe. I’d hope so because we actually got targeted but with AMEX RAT who knows…

Crazy that they sent you offers on cards you already have…. somehow that seems riskier. In my case, we don’t have the cards and haven’t for 2 years….

FYi I know people who have 10 AMEX business gold cards and that is allowed BTW. 4X on advertising and they max em all. I know another guy who wants to spend 20K on ads using those cards. He would need 50-60 new cards per year LOL.

I have one business plat and just got the same email offer. I need to call on that. It would save me on the annual fee when the other one goes to a higher fee in 2022.

Same here. I have a business Plat and a targeted email says I can get another. I may call and try to get real answers on this. It is possible they would allow it since we are a real business and have the business cards.

They need the $25 to pay the rep’s unemployment. Duh.

FM is actually paraphrasing a single person’s experience…I want more context about their situation and the conversation around this $25 fee.

What are the chances you get shut down again almost immediately after paying $25 to re-instate yout account?

Happy Thanksgiving, Amex!

So, it’s going to be regular practice for banks now to open accounts without your permission. It’s also going to be regular practice to close accounts. It’s also going to be regular practice to make them you pay them to reinstate accounts or close accounts in the future.
