The Fine Print

  • Offer valid on U.S. website only at hotelstorm.com/amex-smb.
  • Valid only on purchases made in US dollars.
  • Please note that hotels, car rental companies, cruise lines do not accept prepaid cards for charges authorized in advance, although prepaid cards may be used to settle the final bill. Check to make sure prepaid cards are accepted before attempting to use your prepaid card to take advantage of offers for these merchants.
  • Excludes Rocket Miles, RocketTravel and Tripfuel.

Our Verdict

HotelStorm also offers 15% cash back when you go through a portal, but it’s not clear if that can stack; best bet is to go through the portal, then navigate to the official landing page and hope it tracks. In my experience HotelStorm is significantly more expensive than other online travel agencies and that’s before you consider stacking opportunities on that site as well. Feel free to check for yourself, but I always find this deal to not be worth it.

I find these AmEx offers (HotelStorm, Tripfuel, etc.) very strange. First, the taxes & fees for hotels booked through HotelStorm are substantially higher than going direct or through Expedia / Hotels.com. Secondly, I am quite positive that you cannot ‘double dip’ with a portal (I tried on a prior offer).

I think these offers exist almost purely for folks who ‘expense’ corporate hotel stays through their personal or personal corporate card, so that they can pocket $75 at the expense of their company (b/c the taxes & fees are so substantially higher than going through alternative methods.)

Makes sense. Rates are completely uncompetitive to OTAs even after discount.

Additionally, another downside is that when going through a portal, certain hotels no longer show up as available even though they were showing without a portal. Beware.

Booked by going through TCB portal. The booking was tracked, but I don’t think it will trigger the Amex bonus – I didn’t get the Amex email and it’s been almost a week since the purchase posted to my account and no cash back yet. Hope someone proves me wrong
