Our Verdict

This is useful for Renaissance stays, but it can’t be used at other Marriott locations. In the past, many of us had success purchasing Marriott gift cards at the hotel to use for future stays in any Marriott location. We’ve finally gotten a confirmation on Flyertalk that, unsurprisingly, this is working for the current offer as well.

There is a small risk here that something can go wrong; since gift cards are officially excluded in the terms you won’t get any help from Amex if that happens.

Reselling Angle

If you don’t need Marriott gift cards for actual use, you can sell them to Cardpool for 88% of their value and profit $16 on the sale. You’ll also rack up 160 free credit card points along the way.

One note of caution: Not all Renaissance locations will carry Marriott gift cards. More likely they do have them somewhere but the front-desk people won’t necessarily know. Selling Marriott gift cards in apparently not a request they are used to getting. You’ll probably have more luck with the day-shift reps.

It may not be worth going hugely out of your way for this deal, but if you’re nearby it’s worth stopping by and picking up however many you can.

(This one should also work by purchasing Hilton gift cards in-hotel to lock in the discount for the future, but we don’t have any data points on this yet and I don’t even know for certain that they carry Hilton gift cards at the desk.)
