Not targeted

Got the 15% (max $15) on Sapphire Reserve. Normally wouldn’t bother since the VGC fee is $6.95, but it’s right next door to my Office Depot, so after grabbing a bunch of cards there I hopped over and grabbed one from BBB, so an easy $10.

0/7 with Chase… 0/2 with BoA… who gets these offers and why?

Lantean, I get most of the offers. It has to do with how much you spend on these card (i.e. the ones Will mentioned above, Chase, BofA, Regions, PNC, etc.) and where you spend it. Finally, it also matters where you live. For instance, I’m in Cleveland, so I got the offer for United Airlines, but not Alaska Airlines because they don’t serve CLE. Since I’m Platinum Honors, I use my 4 BofA cards (P1 and P2) for all my everyday spending (2 cards) and online spending (2 cards). I use my CSR for all travel and eating out. So, as you could guess, I get offers like BBB, Lowes, Rite Aid, etc. on B of A. I get primarily travel and restaurant offers on CSR. With that said, I occasionally get decent offers on my Chase Freedom. Some of the offers are “national” (like AmEx, everyone gets them no matter what), while most are “targeted” based on your spending habits. I’ve saved hundreds, if not thousands of dollars with these offers. (The travel ones like hotels are where your savings can really add up)

So, if you’ve sock drawered these cards or only use them for a specific category then you won’t get any of the “targeted” offers, only the “national” ones like Proactiv, Harry & David, etc.

As Will mentions, the offers are all capped so the savings aren’t huge. But its such easy money and for the most part, on places I shop at anyway. For example, my BBB sells Amazon GCs, so getting an easy 10% is better than the 5% I get on my Amazon credit card, etc. Plus I get an extra 2.625% on my B of A card. And, as Will often mentions, you can stack these too with portal cashback, coupon codes (online), etc.

Finally, when you combine these with the B of A “coins”, these offers are often just as good or even better than AmEx offers. Especially when you factor in that the spend minimums are lower. B of A also recently did a “double savings” day where any money you saved on purchases that day was doubled. It was a nice bonus.

Hope this helps…many thanks to Will for publicizing these. Even though I took advantage of these offers for a couple years on PNC (I believe Will didn’t start posting them until Chase started offering them), its always nice to see what’s out there. My kids are hoping that the Great Wolf Lodge offer comes back….I did quite well on that with PNC a couple times. 🙂

Gotta say, every year the BBB VGC holiday rebate deal gets worse and worse. Swore it off after last year’s debacle of having to follow up on rebate denials. Though this may make me go back.

That was an absolute farce. Even with the additional paperwork submitted I only got 2 of the 6 cards my family should have gotten.

Hilto Surpass exclusive offer for TPG readers: 150k points + $100 statement credit after first purchase. Incognito worked for me.

are you saying tpg is pushing an offer that’s best for everyone, not just him?

Well in fairness that’s not “good” — he’s still maximizing his benefit, it’s just he is also exploiting his position to get a better offer for other people too, which isn’t selfless as it incentivizes people to use his link rather than any other one
