  • Group 5 boarding, for the primary cardmember on domestic itineraries operated by American Airlines

  • Earn 1x points on all other purchases

Our Verdict

Recently the benefit of receiving 10% of redeemed miles was removed and replaced by the companion certificate. This is the first time we’ve seen an offer with the companion certificate also come with 60,000 miles, previously it was only 50,000 miles. The 10% benefit is never coming back so I suspect this is the best offer we will see on this card. In the past it has been possible to get an additional 500 miles by using a flight attendants link & code, that isn’t currently possible though. This is probably the best offer on a card with no minimum spend.

We’ll be adding it to our best credit card bonus list. Read through these things you should know about Barclaycard credit cards before asking any basic questions in the comments. For example it’s usually not possible to get matched to a higher sign up bonus, but you might have more success asking for a manager as front line representatives cannot complete these requests.

With the card you get “preferred” boarding, which I believe is group 5, not group 1 as the article states.

You are correct, was going to point that out too.

I opened this card two years ago and I closed it 1 year ago. The terms say once per life time. Any experience on how to churn it?

Currently we are unable to offer you a credit card issued by Barclays Bank Delaware. Details on why we could not make you a credit offer will be mailed to you.

Each anniversary year, earn a Companion Certificate good for 1 guest at $99 (plus taxes and fees) after spending $20,000 on purchases and your account remains open for 45 days after your anniversary date. YOU DID NOT MENTION THIS HIGH SPENDING REQUIREMENT FOR EARNING COMPANION CERTIFICATE.
ALSO annual fee is $99, not $95.

Hey William,

Might want to update the ‘Things You Should Know About Barclaycard Credit Cards’ to not churnable. Aviator has converted to once per lifetime per product.

Wish Barclays would open the doors again to upgrading; still would love to upgrade to Silver.

The Group 5 Boarding is for all American Airlines operated flights, not just domestic. I recently used the benefit on a flight to London which helped to be able to grab bin space for my luggage.

Does the intro CP last for a whole year or for the rest of the calendar year? Don’t need to book AA right away, so wondering how long this would last.

It’s a one-time use companion certificate, not a companion pass. It’s good for one year after it is issued.

I just opened this card 2 weeks ago when the offer was 50K miles plus the certificate. I put the first purchase on 6/23 and the AF was charged on 6/30. The sign-up bonus hasn’t gone through yet. I called to see if I could get the new sign up offer (an extra 10K miles). The rep said that because the bonus hasn’t been awarded yet, I should get the new bonus of 60K miles plus the certificate. Will see if it goes through.

Update on the above post. I was able get the 60K offer, but I had to call and ask them for the match. They initially were going to give me the 50K miles, but I asked them to please match the 60K offer. A week later, I received a letter saying that they were going to give me the additional 10K miles.

Is there any 5/24 rule for this card similar to the Arrival+?

Data Point – Had closed this card about 4 months ago and reapplied for it today. My application went into pending mode so I called up Barclays backdoor. The rep said that there had been no hard pull yet and my application went into a manual review as I had closed this card 4 months ago and wanted to know why I was reopening the card. I mentioned that I have taken up a new project at work that will require extensive travel between AA hubs. She was convinced with my response and agreed to proceed with the pull. Post the pull, she said that my application was denied as I had too many accounts in the last 24 months (I am at about 15/24). She mentioned that if I don’t any new accounts over the next year, I should be eligible for this card again. I will be about 6/24 at that stage.

Applied and denied 🙁

Called their reconsideration line and he told me it’s because of their policy for to many new accounts, I’m in 6/24 so probably that’s why, if you want to jump on this but are on the fence because of 5/24, just don’t do it :/

They checked Transunion and Equifax for me

I wanted the free baggage for AA, guess I’ll stick with Delta for now

From what the bloggers say, Citi AA cards give free baggage according to your AA number so you don’t even have to buy the ticket with card to get the benefit.

Hi, William.

I applied AA Aviator Red 2 years ago and converted it to AA Aviator (the one without annual fee) some time ago. I am still holding the non-annual fee aviator card. Can I apply this and get the bonus?

Thanks,
