BBVA 5% for February 17th have Posted

The 5% rewards for the NBA All Star Weekend promotion on the BBVA NBA card hadn’t post properly for February 17, only for the 18th and 19th. Today, the rewards are showing up properly for the entire period.

One oddity is that rewards for the 17th are still showing as 1x in the detailed transaction history, BUT your actual reward balance should reflect the full 5%, and that amount is fully redeemable.

Due to a previous cash back balance on the BBVA card, I’m finding it hard to figure out whether my Plastiq tax payment earned 5%; it hadn’t worked in previous promos and I did a small $50 test. A larger pay1040 tax payment clearly earned 5%, as has been the case in the past. Update: I see now that my Plastiq tax payment worked. I’m guessing everything works now since it’s capped at $5k.

The easiest way to redeem rewards is to use the Rewards > Cash Back > Account Credit option since it allows redeeming exact amounts. Readers point out that BBVA rounds off, so to maximize you’ll want to redeem to the dollar and not the cent, e.g. redeem 24,300 points for $243, and don’t redeem the full 24,356 points.

If you have the app, you can use Real Time Rewards to accomplish the same.

My taxes got denied 5x, using Pay1040. They said it was a cash equivalent.

Yep, it shows 1x for both the payment and the fees. Total and line-item are both 1x.

The CSR said that plenty of other calls have come in for tax payments and have been denied. So it’s a 50/50 to me whether it gets through as 5x or not.

I filed a CFPB complaint and the response from BBVA was that the Pay1040 Tax payments are not considered “goods and services”.

I made a purchase for $5275.00 on the Feb 17, and I received the full 5x for the full purchase. I thought the limit was $5000? Does anyone know if this is unenforced or maybe they make exceptions for single purchases over the limit?

Sorry, I was wrong. I did get the points, but on the website thats what is shows in reward history. If you click “click here to view all previous points earned” It shows in there that I indeed earned 5x points. So I guess that should be checked if your points don’t show on the regular reward history.

It looks like the left overs (cents) post the next day as a small balance waiver: Per example

01/06/2017 SMALL BALANCE WAIVER $0.30
01/05/2017 BBVA REWARDS ACCT CRED $50.00

Plastiq works fine just like it always has. Only one guy had trouble with it but that was just an abnormality. My mortgage netted me $36.20 as expected.
