BBVA 5% for February 17th have Posted

The 5% rewards for the NBA All Star Weekend promotion on the BBVA NBA card hadn’t post properly for February 17, only for the 18th and 19th. Today, the rewards are showing up properly for the entire period.

One oddity is that rewards for the 17th are still showing as 1x in the detailed transaction history, BUT your actual reward balance should reflect the full 5%, and that amount is fully redeemable.

Due to a previous cash back balance on the BBVA card, I’m finding it hard to figure out whether my Plastiq tax payment earned 5%; it hadn’t worked in previous promos and I did a small $50 test. A larger pay1040 tax payment clearly earned 5%, as has been the case in the past. Update: I see now that my Plastiq tax payment worked. I’m guessing everything works now since it’s capped at $5k.

The easiest way to redeem rewards is to use the Rewards > Cash Back > Account Credit option since it allows redeeming exact amounts. Readers point out that BBVA rounds off, so to maximize you’ll want to redeem to the dollar and not the cent, e.g. redeem 24,300 points for $243, and don’t redeem the full 24,356 points.

If you have the app, you can use Real Time Rewards to accomplish the same.

Last year I redeemed 20,416 points but only got $204 in credit. Looks like fractions are ignored?

The same thing happened to me. Now I just redeem a whole dollar amount ( just did 3900 points for $39.00) and carry over the remainder to the next 5X bonus period. Points are good for 3 years before they expire.

The good things is there seems no minimum redemption requirement unlike most programs have for 5000 points.

Fractions are indeed ignored. If you have some transactions which aren’t whole $’s though, you’re in luck. Redeeming against purchases gives the exact purchase amount. So, for example, if you made a purchase of $4.59 and redeem 459 points against it, you get the full amount.

Based on that, here’s a script (Python, runs in browser for convenience) that will automagically calculate the optimal redemption, minimizing

1. unredeemed points
2. number of transactions redeemed against

Note that you can redeem against a single transaction multiple times if you simply add it to the cart again. The script does not currently minimize the number of times redeemed against a single transaction (vs transactions total).

Instructions provided in the window. Just replace the example numbers (499, 123, 761, …) with your own transactions and 46518 with the number of points you want to redeem 🙂

If you found this helpful, please consider using one of my referral links (same name on /r/churning and other DoC threads). Thanks!

“The easiest way to redeem rewards is to use the Rewards > Cash Back > Account Credit option since it allows redeeming exact amounts.”

Actually, it doesn’t. You statement credit will only reflect whole dollars. Any cents in your redemption will be forfeited. So 15432 points redeemed will only generate a statement credit of $154.00 as will 15499 points & 15400 points.

What was the transaction for?

it was for an online purchase from nordstrom.com, transaction date was the 17th and posted the 23rd. I checked back today and I received the 5x rewards, for the full amount ($5275), interesting data point because it seems to be beyond the max (you can also see my comment below).

Plastiq works fine just like it always has. Only one guy had trouble with it but that was just an abnormality. My mortgage netted me $36.20 as expected.

It looks like the left overs (cents) post the next day as a small balance waiver: Per example

01/06/2017 SMALL BALANCE WAIVER $0.30
01/05/2017 BBVA REWARDS ACCT CRED $50.00

My points from 2/17 still have not posted.

I take that back – just read the part where they show up as 1x but post as 5x.

Sorry, I was wrong. I did get the points, but on the website thats what is shows in reward history. If you click “click here to view all previous points earned” It shows in there that I indeed earned 5x points. So I guess that should be checked if your points don’t show on the regular reward history.

I made a purchase for $5275.00 on the Feb 17, and I received the full 5x for the full purchase. I thought the limit was $5000? Does anyone know if this is unenforced or maybe they make exceptions for single purchases over the limit?

My taxes got denied 5x, using Pay1040. They said it was a cash equivalent.
