BBVA Removes The Annual Fee On Their NBA Card (5x Everywhere Two Times A Year)

BBVA offers the NBA card, when it first launched it had a $50 annual fee attached to it (which was waived the first year). Then they had a promotion running where this was waived for life if you applied within a certain time frame, then they extended that time frame. They’ve now removed the annual fee all together, as evidenced by this screenshot of the fees & disclosures page.

annual fee card

If you signed up when the card still had an annual fee attached to it (waived first year) I’d recommend calling in and getting that fee removed for the life of your account as new cardholders don’t have this fee attached. If you don’t already have this card, I’d recommend picking it up and here are a few reasons why:

  • This card earns 5x points on all purchases during NBA all stars weekend & NBA finals week without any cap
  • It’s a no annual fee American Express card, making it useful for Small Business Saturday & Amex Sync offers
  • It comes with a 10,000 point ($100) sign up bonus after $500 in spend
  • They often have bonuses for spending small amounts at (e.g $50 & $8.5)

I just had the worst experience with this card. Got approved with high CL and card came right away. Then they freeze my account due to “confirm identity” after hours spent on hold and talking to their semi competent reps and numerous times faxing them requested into (they don’t have email mind you) they closed my account due to not being able to “confirm identity”.

Same thing has happened to me. Got instant approval for 20K w/ an online application. I just got everything in the mail today (welcome kit, card, etc) and another piece of mail, with my address hand written, which I thought was odd, but the letter said they closed my account based on “Unable to verify Identity”. I am planning on calling in to see whats up, but not looking forward to it.

So can I earn 5x pts loading a Serve card with this card, since it’s issued by a different bank?

Yes, but only during the promotional periods.

Does anyone know the recon number for them? I got a letter saying wasn’t “able to verify identity” as the reason for declining me.

I guess all of you and new readers too, forgot that the last time this card was 5%, they declined most charges and when you paid off the charges, they froze your credit line. So effectively you couldn’t use the card for 5%. As soon as the 5% period ended, my credit was restored. They are fakers, but if you don’t believe me, apply and see what happens. I had a CL of 20k and couldn’t use more then 5k for 5%.

Not everybody had your bad luck. They’ll have had almost a year to think about it, so it will be curious to see what they do next time

Can’t wait for the NBA season to start! Just finally finished liquidating some cards from last season’s finals.

How hard pull sensitive is this bank? And do they give super low credit lines typically, like some of those other 5X cards?

They’re actually very very generous about credit limit as far as I know. Got a 10k credit limit with stated income of 55k. Also they’re NOT HP sensitive. I got 5 HP six months prior to applying to this card.

from my personal experience they are not as “inquiry” sensitive as Chase. They gave me a $30,000 credit line, but I have superior credit, so that could be the reason for the high credit line.

When I got this card in May I had 17 hard pulls already on the year.. Still got accepted for an average to generous credit limit.

Although I had a few cards in the 15-20k CL range already when I signed up for this one, they gave me 19k as a brand new customer with no former relationship. This was by far the single highest limit I ever got on a brand new card. Problem is you can’t use the CL since they block almost all transactions…

I obtained several other credit cards recently, but even so they gave me a $15,000 starting limit and 11.24% APR this morning. They seem rather generous to me.

Does this card count towards Amex’s limit of four personal cards?

Nope! You can register a twitter acct to utilize the amex offer

No — this card is issued by BBVA. The “4 limit” applies to cards issues by AMEX.

Since this is an Amex issued by BBVA, I’m guessing it won’t combine if applied at same time as say the PRG, correct? My gf will be applying for the PRG and looking to throw in a no fee at the same time, combine pulls. I’m thinking the Hilton for 40k or the Everyday for 10k. Would’ve loved to combine the Plat 100k & PRG 50k, but were on vaca and missed it by 2 days!!!!

Thanks Doc

It’s a separate bank so it won’t combine.
