Bank Account Bonuses

Published on August 14th, 2017 | by William Charles

BMO Harris $200 Checking Bonus Now Limited To AZ, FL, IL, IN, KS, MO, MN and WI

BMO Harris offers a popular $200 checking sign up bonus. Unfortunately they have added new terms to the bonus that state:

  • If you are opening your account online or by phone, you must reside in a state that BMO Harris operates retail branches and use that address to open the account. BMO Harris currently operates retail branches in AZ, FL, IL, IN, KS, MO, MN and WI

I’m not sure when this language was added to the offer, reader Daniel noticed it on 8/12 and reader kirk notes that it wasn’t there on 8/5 when they applied. This should reinforce two important things:

I’ll update the BMO Harris post to include this important piece of information and also update our best bank bonus page. It seems that out of state applications will still work if you apply in branch as this only affects applications made online and by phone.

Hat tip to berneigh on /r/churning & reader Daniel

Ugh. I’ve heard of people fighting for this bonus as it is, I bet now they’ll try to enforce these terms on accounts opened before they added the restrictions.

  2. Austin Auclair says:

Applied online in Florida but still denied haha. Do yall think going into the branch would change anything?

  3. Rab says:

I applied 7/24 and i m in GA.. hopefully i will get the bonus

  4. JT says:

Sure wish my comments would appear.

  5. DD says:

if you emailed yourself a code before the terms changed, can you still use that code with the old terms?

  6. Adrian says:

    Not worth the effort

    Don’t do it. Half kidding.

I’m just bitter I never got my bonus even after 2 escalations. They still had the nerve to mail me a non-prepaid postage letter requiring a signature even though I ‘canceled’ over the phone…

  7. Tech_Mo says:

I’m still waiting for my bonus – I figure I’ll give it another 20 days or so since I opened the account in May and met the requirements in June.

Also they sent me someone else’s social security number, address, and account numbers by accident for the signature page – I reported it to them, but still makes me a bit concerned about how they handle their customers’ information…

  8. TheAJx says:

I applied in June and met all the requirements by July and still have not received anything.

  9. Karen says:

Does anyone know when the terms changed? I applied on 8/12 and didn’t check the fine print.

  10. Charles says:

There is also a branch in DC, I wonder why that one is excluded.

  11. PISSED says:

Waited OVER 120 days. Still No bonus, even AFTER I called to escalate. The bank is a joke. Reps don’t care.

  12. Ryan says:

I signed up in the last round of bonuses, and had no issue getting it. I live in CA, and this was before the geo-restriction language was added.

    Opened: 04/27/2017
    First DD hit: 05/12/2017
    Second DD hit: 05/26/2017
    Bonus credited automatically: 06/20/2017

Only real issue I had was that they apparently don’t give you much of a grace period to avoid the monthly fee. (I opened before they changed to their current checking lineup, so I have the “Everyday Checking” package) The account wasn’t even open a full month when they tried to charge me the $12 service fee since I hadn’t met the minimum direct deposit to waive it. I chatted online with them, and they waived it and apologized that it had even posted. All in all, they were fairly painless to deal with, but they seem very YMMV.

  13. Gunger says:

My email coupon Wed, Aug 9, 2017 6PM does not have the state language.

  14. MIL215 says:

I applied for the account on the 13th and was wondering why I was denied outright. I am not sure if it is due to a recent move or due to them changing the wording.

Unfortunate because it is a great offer. Just more reason that you need to jump on these offers.

  15. Jerry says:

Opened five months ago. Still no bonus. Also, I was dumb and did not screenshot the offer.

  16. Pam says:

I opened it a few months ago and used Capital one as the direct deposits and it credited today! Yay!

  17. Pam says:

I opened it when it wasn’t so restricted with the states as I live in Colorado and it can’t be open from here now

  18. rmah says:

i opened an account mid august 2017. made two $300+ deposits from my capital one account. they posted as ACH.

i just chatted online and the agent said i have to show paycheck stubs!??! huh?

are people getting the bonus doing a capital one ACH WITHOUT showing paycheck stubs??

    • HarryTheFirstHarry says:

      1) If you call/chat without doing real DD then you will be punished and your punishment is that you have to show pay stubs.
      2) If you do not chat/call and do ACH transfer and keep your finger crossed for 120 days, then you will not be punished and you MAY get the bonus as so many have got. If you are a good person, you may get it even earlier in 90 days but if you do not get after 90 days and decide to then you will be punished again as above.
      3) Only if you do real DD and bonus does not post may you have a valid reason to chat/call. Sometimes even then you could get punished.
So take your pick…1,2 or 3.

      • rmah says:

awesome info. thanks. i’m going to lay low and keep my fingers crossed.

fyi, bmo has been a MISERABLE experience for reasons not even relating to the bonus. customer service is horrible.

  19. scott says:

I opened my account 4 months ago and used real DD. Still haven’t received the bonus. I did an on-line chat with a rep who said I met all the requirements, and then told me this:

“The bonus is deposited around the 120 day mark however as this is considered an Interest Payment for tax purposes, interest or in this case the bonus is deposited on the last day of your statement cycle that closes after that 120 day mark. ”

I opened the account on May 19 and he told me I would receive the bonus on Oct. 5, the last day of the statement cycle that closes after 120 days. Has anyone else heard of this? I’ve never had to wait so long for a bonus!

    • rmah says:

      hope you get it buddy!

i hope i get it too!

i know that it has been a miserable experience opening/dealing with/and communicating with cust service on this account.

had i known, i would have never even tried for it!

  20. Ozzie says:

I had to provide the additional information for my customer profile or they would close my account. I received 2 emails and finally a UPS overnight letter directing me to call ASAP. Took about 10 minutes to answer all their questions.

From what I can remember they asked very specifically about employment industry and classification, citizenship, international transfers, how I funded my account and how I would be accessing it in the future (mobile, online, in person, etc) and a few other things. I was a slightly nervous because I have opened a lot of accounts this year, but they did not ask any specific questions regarding my employment, income, investments, or other accounts.

  21. David says:

Just mentioning that the old terms (without geo-restriction) have been archived by the Internet Archive project… You can get them here:

This is an archive from June 13 2017, from before the location restriction was added.

  22. Stephen says:

I opened a checking with them on 8/11. I am still holding out for the bonus after completing the DD requirements. Yesterday, I received a mailer from them inviting me to open a savings account with $1000 in new money and they would give me a $25 bonus. The link appears to be open to anyone at Use the coupon code NCDMOCT17SAV25.

  23. Skor says:

Still waiting for the bonus, account opened on 8/28

  24. Josh says:

Applied today online & opened the free checking account. Funded $1000 with Citi AA Gold MasterCard, CA is set to $0, shows as a pending purchase on my account with Citi.

  25. Darv says:

I thought I would share an experience on here with BMO.

My wife applied for a checking account a few months ago. I helped her with the application. Per the comments here, I expected her to get a call from them to verify the account, along that line. She didn’t get a call but rather an email saying she had to call in. So she did. They asked her especially probing questions and some verification questions that she couldn’t answer. They froze her account. Ally trial deposit credit failed and that made Ally mad, now she can’t add any more external accounts to Ally.

So we finally got into the branch and that resolved the issue except then she got a debit card in the mail and when she tried to activate it, was transferred to a human being. Again, they started on verification questions and one of them made us angry. They asked for the amount of the most recent check to clear her account. It was a trick question, because there wasn’t a check. There were two trial deposit transactions, which were technically ACH transfers, and she told them about that, but the agent was snippy, and repeated the question. Finally I told her to tell the agent there hadn’t been a check. She then passed and the debit card was activated.

This was ridiculous. First of all we wouldn’t bother with the bank except for the bonus, and even then probably wouldn’t have bothered with them if not for the credit card funding. Don’t get me wrong; I would have done them, and will do them again when eligible again. But I wouldn’t recommend this for anybody’s SO if they don’t want to be overly burdened. This made my wife angry. It was a gauntlet to pass the identity verification questions during the application, and that should have been enough for them, but it took a lot more.

    • Radar says:

This happend with my husband when he first received the debit card. When he called to activate he was transferred to a human who was snippy and rude and my husband asked her transfer to supervisor so that he does not have to deal with her. She agreed and was transferring the call to different dept. And my husband lost patience and hung up the call . Didnt bother to activate the debit card for like a month. Then after a month we thought of adding the card to google wallet and we called to activate and this time there was no human just regular automated voice which verified and activated his card. Lol

  26. Steve says:

Open account 7/10/17 – 2 x $300 Chase ACH’s within 30-weeks of opening. 11/14/17 messaged Customer Service and was advised that these were not acceptable DD’s.

    • Steve says:

      within 3-weeks*

    • JuicyJosh says:

Steve, come on man. This counts as calling the bank. I will tell you for any future bank bonuses – an ACH transfer does not count as DD when you speak to a bank rep. Did you do a legit DD? Yes? Then contact them. Otherwise just bite the bullet and move on to the next one.

  27. calwatch says:

Account opened June 23, requirement met September 15 (because my Lyft payments posted as “CCD TRANSFER”, I put in a real payroll deposit just in case). Complained November 10, got a response back November 13 claiming it will post in 10 business days. I opened the account in CA.
