Our Verdict

They offered the same promotion last year and rates were actually quite good. You’ll want to make sure you compare this to other portals though by using something like cashbackmonitor.

Avios earned through BA shopping can take longer to post than other portals, so a bit of patience is required. It can be several weeks before you receive a preliminary email saying you have points “pending” from your purchase. And then more weeks before the points actually post.

Nice! Avios are probably my favourite currency, tho they do get you good on those long haul b-class. And if you’re not careful with those taxes/levies, watch out…the British will bend you over and pillage like they did those remote South Pacific islands at the apex of the British (Bright-ish?) Empire!!

I just paid 90k avios b-class -lax-kix because didn’t have enough AA or Alaska miles , that’s steep but if you factor in the 1.4 AMEX bonus and their outsized portal payouts (they’re rates almost always highest for airline portals) it kinda evens out.

And NRT-KOA in JAL economy for 20k avios leaving later this week. my back won’t appreciate sitting in what promises to be a p.o.s seat for 7 hrs…but man to get to Hawaii that’s pretty darn solid.

JL Y is quite nice and most planes have 34″ pitch. Don’t know if I’d do that long haul since I love their J, but man 20k is CHEAP.

Ken, you’re darn right 20K is a bargain! The only places I travel to are Hawaii, Japan and Great Britain (occasionally Milan, what with their impeccable fabrics and stunning women), and Avios absolutely wipes their competitors to those stops. Getting to KOA or LIH for 12.5K for West Coast on Alaska, HNL or KOA from Tokyo JAL both just sneak under 4,000 miles so 20K there, and of course ORD-LHR off peak for as low as 13K (or even 6.5K) on BA metal…even with the typical harsh British tax thats still a good deal. Kinda long flights but if you get a strong tail wind all of those flights can take 7hrs or less ( I once made ORD-LHR in 6.25 hrs, an AA employee on the flight said it was one of the most remarkable flight performances he’d ever seen), so if you’ve got some physical and mental toughness its manageable .

Landed earlier today NRT-KOA. JAL Y reminded me of an AA economy seat, certainly made me long for the J class I had last week LAX-KIX, but JAL service is the best even in Y! Left @ 9;30PM TUE and landed 9;30 AM TUE, so I get 2 cracks at TUE 2/20/18.

Even though I was one of maybe 3 Gaijin on a full flight stuffed with a Kona bound Japanese tour group, somehow the seat next to me was empty, so a rough situation was made a little better in that I had 2 Y seats to work with.

Dumb Luck Carl strikes again.

Is there a way to see US based department stores on the Avios estore website? I only see UK based when I go to the site but if I google search “Macys Avios eStore” it comes up with the US based link.

Checked out the rates…good but not needle movers like last years 3x. Still 2x eBay is pretty solid.
