Capital One Launches Savor Card with 3% Cashback on Dining and $150 Signup Bonus

Update (August 14, 2018): Card has been significantly upgraded. Please see this post for updated information.

Captital One announced today a new credit card called the Capital One Savor card aimed at dining aficionados. A similar card called the Premier Dining Rewards launched back in March, and they’ve now rebranded to Savor, upped the signup bonus from $100 to $150, and a few other changes like contactless payments.

Direct Card Link

The Capital One Savor card earns the following rewards rates with no earnings limit:

  • 3% cashback on dining
  • 2% cashback on groceries
  • 1% cashback everywhere else

Card comes with the following signup bonus:

  • Get $150 when you spend $500 within three months from account opening

Fees

  • No annual fee
  • 0% APR for the first 9 months
  • Seems that the card has no foreign transaction fee

Our Verdict

Most of are readers will give this card a pass. There are better signup bonuses out there, even better cash signup bonuses, and the earnings rate isn’t exciting either.

We’ll assume everyone has a card that earns 2% or more on all purchases, making this card only useful for dining. 3% cashback on dining can be nice, especially for someone who prefers cashback over points, but I’d guess most of our readers either have a card that earns 2.5-3% everywhere or have a card which earns bonus points on dining like the CSR which earns 3x on dining (worth a minimum of 3%).

Might be worthwhile as a product-change (if they allow that) for someone who dines out a lot and doesn’t have a card earning 3%. Could also make sense as a no-fee international card, especially for someone who dines out a lot outside the USA.

It’s interesting they made this one a World Elite Mastercard, and they specify it’s for someone with excellent credit, while it seems more targeted to basic consumers with no annual fee and simple cashback earnings. If you are interested in applying, check out these Things to Know about Capital One Credit Cards before applying.

Interestingly new card isn’t a World Elite but a platinum; PC evidently only changes the reward program but retains the tier of card.

I don’t think one can change payment networks

I have a useless QS too, if it was MC would’ve converted and got World Elite, just for kicks

Did you try and get any spending bonus?

My old QS was a MC. I’m surprised the new card isn’t World Elite because Savor is advertised as such.

Phone rep ruled out spending bonus during his boilerplate speech.

You should be able to use this World Elite Mastercard to get Hertz President’s Circle status:

Just a heads up on a typo, under verdict, you wrote “Most of are readers will give this card a pass.” Believe that should be “Most of OUR readers.”
Thanks!

Can anyone speak to their experience with freezing Experian report and getting approved by Capital One for a credit card? I have never done this and have too many inquiries on EX. Thanks

This card definitely has no FTF (like all Cap One cards).

Because I have an old QuickSilver sitting around doing nothing, if I convert it to a Savor, at least it becomes more relevant & useful & I would be much more likely to use it. I don’t dine out heavily, but there is no minimum redemption, so you can cash out anytime even if you switch to using a travel card with high dining earn rate.

Alternative cash back cards (no spend caps & 3% dining):
Chase AARP – 3% dining, BUT has FTF & $20 min redemption;
Costco Visa – 3% dining, BUT has FTF, you need Costco membership, & wait a year to get cash back at Costco

FYI, I think Chase AARP removed their redemption minimum like other Chase cards. And to add onto your post, TD Cash Rewards is $25 redemption minimum. So this Cap One card seems better.

Thanks for your comment about Chase cards. I knew Freedom Unlimited had no minimum when it was released, but the Freedom 5% card still had a $20 minimum at the time. I see that Freedom 5% states no minimum now which I didn’t know.

Chase Amazon – still states online that it is $20 min to redeem for cash (redemption on Amazon has no minimum).

Chase AARP – I notice the $20 minimum language is no longer listed online, but it also doesn’t state there is no minimum either that I can find.

Just checked my Chase account and can confirm Chase AARP (3x travel version) has no minimum – $0.01. Safe to assume the restaurant version is the same.

I attempted to product change to this card today from Quicksilver.

CSR says only Venture is available to me. If I want Savor I must reapp.

I attempted to convert from QuickSilver to Savor today.

1. NO on product change. I was invited to apply as a new app, which I declined.

2. Interesting data point: Rep said existing Premier Dining Rewards cards will be automatically converted to Savor on NOV 7, which included sending out new cards.

@Jason

As for the sign up bonus, yes, TD also offers $150/

As for the earning, no. TD used to be 2 and 1 but now upped its game to 3,2,1 after CapOne introduced theirs previous version.

It is a good card because it is a Mastercard and even an Elite version.

CapOne customer service actually is quite good. No foreign reps to deal with in my experiences. They are very quick in taking care of rental car claims, based on a few friends’ experiences when they used the Venture for International car rentals and had to file claims.

I dont understand why the writer thinks this is not a good card. Not everyone just goes after sign up bonuses. There are cards one want to hold for use long term. Except for the Fidelity card I dont think ANY of the 2% cash rebate cards are 0% FTF.

Also keep in mind that with CapOne cards, even their Visa cards DONT pass on the 1% Visa network fee while Chase would – so your 3% dining earned aboard from your $150 net fee a year CSR, would only earn 2% in reality as the exchange rate is jetted up to include the 1% though often is more like 0.5 to 0.8% not quite 1%.

Mastercard also has better exchange rate than Visa as a known fact.

This and the TD card both are good cards for those who travel international a lot. Though I am more inclined to CapOne’s as it is a Mastercard.

As for the 3 HPs one on each bureau, big deal. In the age of no more AppoRama, and most bonuses are restrictive to 24 months or life time, cannot see how one would incur numerous HPs in short period unless one is indiscriminately getting cards.

Fidelity Visa is 1% FTF dropping earning to 1% cashback for foreign transactions.

Orange card with circles? To each his own, but I much prefer the classic gray design of the previous CapOne Premier Dining World Elite. I hope they don’t make me switch my card out anytime soon.
