Do Chase In App Credit Card Offers By Pass 5/24?

Update: At least one reader was denied due to 5/24. Looks like this doesn’t bypass the rule.

Recently the Chase mobile app started displaying credit card offers in a banner at the top of the app (see image below). A lot of readers have been asking if this will by-pass the Chase 5/24 rule like in branch pre-approvals and website ‘selected offers for you’ do.

chase-app-offer

The short answer is that I don’t have any hard datapoints that suggest this does or doesn’t bypass the rule. I suspect it’ll be treated as a regular application and the rule will still apply for the following reasons:

If anybody does apply in app, please let us know if you were able to get around the rule or not in the comments below.

Confirming that seeing this in ap does not mean you are pre-approved. I am over 5/24 and started seeing the banner for the CSP in ap (have CSR and other Chase cards). I called my private client banker and she checked to see if I am pre-approved. I am not and therefore I did not pursue the application.

  2. Lantean says:

for me it’s the same sheety offers i see on Chase website… only in-branch i get the good stuff.

  3. David says:

No luck. It is just an advertisement.

  4. Mo says:

Fwiw I got this notification for a CSP but wasn’t sure what it meant as far as preapproval, so I logged on to the desktop site and saw the same offer as a “selected for you”. Applied and approved instantly. Was at 8/24 at time of app. Bottom line if you get this, could be worth checking if you have a “selected for you” offer on the full site

  5. YRK says:

    Wow.
I be wondering same for quite sometime now as i be seeing recently MY OFFERS(mobile)and selected for you(on desktop)
For chase slate , freedom unlimited and CSP(50K)
    Am at exactly 5/24.
Is it worth it to apply through online or go to branch (no banking relationship barring one freedom cc)?

    • YRK says:

On related note , if have any questions or scenarios where to ask them (any specific thread for that?
      Thanks

    • Ryan says:

If you have Offers for you on their website showing the green checkmark next to it, you should be able to bypass 5/24 for those cards. I recently had this at well over 5/24 and was approved for CSP and CFU immediately, both with substantial limits.

    • Selected for you bypass 5/24, so I’d apply online for that.

      • YRK says:

        Just returned from chase branch.
Finally got the checking account open for the bonus.
Though am not CPC , i was dealt with one.
Well i asked him loads of questions and also applied for CSP (was 5/24) before that.
He checked my preappoval and all shown were same as the one in app

        • YRK says:

Was approved for 7k CSP . Was only freedom with them for 4.5k.
Asked him if possible to CLI freedom on same hp.
He called the concern dept but they said they will treat it as separate application and it would not be combined

          • YRK says:

And i asked him if chance that i won’t be still approved for csp despite preapproval showing.
He said it NEVER has happened as per his knowledge

  6. Matt says:

A bit off-topic, but related: i wish there was a way to force the new chase website to show so i can compare this in-app advert against the “selected for you” offers. I can only get the old website to load.

  7. Derek says:

I should also let people know that targeted emails as well as traditional mailers do not bypass 5/24 either (wasted a pull). Appears only in-branch pre-approvals are able to do so.

  8. Rene says:

I don’t see any reason why the offers in the app would be different than the ones on the website. I actually see many technical reasons for it to NOT be different.

    • YRK says:

I dont see ANY offer on the public OFFERS FOR YOU page but see them in-app and within the chase login only .
Personally i always find the public offers quite generic

  9. MRS says:

I’m at around 7/24 and was denied for my first card with Chase (UA Explorer 70k offer) about 3 weeks ago when I applied online via a dummy booking on united.com. I have CSR, CSP, Freedom, Checking, mortgage & auto loan. I’m wondering if I can go into a branch and ask for a pre-approval, apply, get approved and then request via SM to match to the superior online offer? Are there any DPs on this?

    • Justin says:

That will work, but the problem is you are unlikely to have a pre-approval in branch. If you are pre-approved, they generally will match a better offer with SM. But the odds of having a pre-approval, only in branch, especially if you didn’t 3 weeks ago are very low.

      • MRS says:

        Thanks for answer @ Jason.

Update: I stopped by a local branch and the banker said I was not pre-approved for the UA Explorer card, but was showing offers for a few others. She explained that they cannot see pre-approval offers for co-branded cards or as of recently the CSR. She said I could still apply for the Explorer but I told her I’d think about it and possibly return at a later date. I tend to have more trust in DPs on FT/DOC/BA blogs versus what the banker told me (haha!). I was hoping to see a DP of someone that was declined for a co-branded card via online app, applied and approved via in branch application, and then matched via SM.

  10. DSP says:

I just checked and it gave me an offer for CSP. I already got a CSP 12 months ago. This is just an ad

  11. Mark says:

I have a Freedom offer on the banner in the app. All three of my reports are frozen, so I assume it is marketing (at least in my case).

  12. khad says:

Betteridge’s law of headlines: “Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no.”

  13. David says:

My “Selected For You” offer in the mobile app was Chase Business – Get a Virtual Terminal. Not what I was hoping for 🙂

  14. Bigelow says:

I can confirm that this overrides 5/24. I am WAY over 5/24 but was approved for CSP last week when I applied via in app offers.

  15. DAVID says:

I can also confirm that if the offer appears under “Selected for you” it overrides the 5/24 rules. I am 9/24 and I was just approved for the CSP. Thanks Doc, I’d have waited until under 5/24 before applying if I hadn’t seen this post 🙂

  16. MrJPhillips YoutubeChannel says:

Im kinda new to credit…. I was a little nervous about accepting the offer as I have over 10 accounts within 1 year. So the 5/24 is an underwritten rule that is very difficult to understand.

After speaking with 3 different CS reps, they all was not able clarify the rule. One of them actually never heard of this rule. There was lots of information that made me very reserved.

Anyways, I took a deep breath and hit the “SUBMIT” button…. And….

    ……

    .

    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    CONGRATULATIONS!! YOU’RE APPROVED.

    So here’s what I recommend:
    1. Look at your personal credit profile
    2. If you believe that your credit is in tact… no derogs, utility below 30%, no lates, and few inquires within the last 1 year. And…
    3. If you okay with a Hard Pull

    Do it!
