Chase Freedom Q2 2019 5% Categories will be Grocery Stores and Home Improvement Stores

The Chase Freedom card offers 5% back for select categories on up to $1,500 in purchases per quarter. The categories for this upcoming Q2 2019 (April, May, and June) will be as follows:

  • Grocery Stores
  • Home Improvement Stores

This will show up tomorrow at the official Chase Freedom Calendar link, but it’s already showing within the Chase login.

Grocery Stores is an easy one to maximize for most people. If you don’t complete the entire $1,500, you can always buy a gift card to local grocery or else stock up on third party gift cards for places like Amazon, eBay, or Airbnb. Many large grocery chains even sell Visa/MC/Amex gift cards too.

There’s still time to max out your Q1 2019 categories as well.

love that Discover and Chase Freedom just flip flopped in the Quarter and Gas/Groceries are the easiest categories to maximize

Are you able to have more than one Freedom card (via downgrade) and have each qualify for the 5%?

Shop rite sells Shell gas cards and you can never have too many gas cards…

Gerald
Gerald

So does Lowe’s. But whatever I don’t spend organically, I’ll spend on VGCs at Stop and Shop. Given their propensity to have gas points deals, that should be easy.

A big whomp whomp for me as I carry the Amex BCP card and have a stock of HD/Lowes gift cards purchased at either 6% back, or 10% back from a ShopRite Chase Pay promo.

Looks like my Freedom card will be hitting the sock drawer this quarter.

Visa gift cards? I use the gift cards to pay off non bonus category stuff.

Staradmiral
Staradmiral

just buy visa gift card and liquidate it

Novacat05
Novacat05

Meh, after the $7 fee it drops it below 5%, and I can buy VGCs at grocery with BCP and get 6% cash back (before fees) anytime.

It’s not a big deal, I’ll just earn more straight up cash this quarter instead of UR points.

Hodor
Hodor

The return may be higher than 5% depending on what the URs are redeemed for.

I have the DROP app and the percentage I get back from that covers the fee for the $500 visa gift card. I got $4.21 back on credit for purchasing the gift card.

Gerald
Gerald

Sounds like you’re talking about a $6.95 fee on a $200 VGC. How about a $5.95 fee on a $500 VGC? That’s a cost of about $0.0024 per UR.

Amex BCP maxes out at 6000 of purchases, so this is a nice way to keep that card from maxing out.

Also if you pair this with CSP / CSR you are beating the 6%

The Amex BCP card is not as good as it looks. If you max out the 6% on groceries ($6000 per year), you get back $360. But the $95 annual fee reduces the actual cash back to 4.4%. The Blue Cash Everyday at 3% groceries is a better card if you don’t spend more than $4500 per year on groceries.

The Discover and Freedom 5% grocery categories is a better deal at no annual fee. BofA cash rewards (preferred rewards platinum) also has groceries at 3.5% no annual fee.

bcp has a $6000 annual cap. Many of us here might be able to reach that in like a week or so by msing…

If I sign up for this card and spend $500 at the grocery store buying amazon or bestbuy gift cards, will chase honor my sign up bonus or they will shut me down? I mean can I buy $50 worth of grocery and $450 amazon gift card? Does chase care about those things? Dont have any history with chase, only amex

Jatan

Chase doesn’t care about buying GCs — Amex goes crazy

What credit score needed to apply for this card?

Crazy Dog Lady
Crazy Dog Lady

Most people will apply for Chase Sapphire Preferred first if you have good credit because it has higher sign up bonus, then downgrade it to freedom later. Not sure about credit score requirement.

Kroger yes

Electroman

Kroger yes – their subsidiaries (I think that’s what you mean) code as any of various things. For example, Pick n Save, a grocery store brand run by Kroger, definitely code as a grocery store.

Does Home Improvement Stores include online purchases from HD.com or Lowes.com etc.?

This update made my fridge spewing water all over suck just slightly less.
