[Targeted] Chase United MileagePlus Explorer Sign Up Bonus Of 40,000 Miles + $200 & Annual Fee Waived First Year

The Offer

No direct link to offer

  • Chase is offering a sign up bonus of 40,000 miles after $2,000 in purchases within the first three months and a $200 United travel credit after your first purchase on the United MileagePlus Explorer

Card Details

  • Annual fee of $95 is waived first year
  • Free first checked bag
  • Priority boarding
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • 2 United Club one-time passes each year for your Cardmember anniversary
  • 5,000 bonus miles after you add the first authorized user and make your first purchase in the first 3 months from account opening
  • Earn 2 miles per $1 spent on tickets purchased from United**
  • Earn 1 mile per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • Miles don’t expire as long as your credit card account remains open
  •  5/24 rule applies to this card, which you can read about here

Our Verdict

Current public offer is for 65,000 miles. This is 25,000 miles less, but you get a $200 statement credit. The upside to this offer is that only $2,000 in spend is required, rather than $10,000. Because of that a lot of people will prefer this smaller bonus. Most people won’t be eligible due to the 5/24 rule and the fact that this is a targeted offer.  If you have any questions about this card or Chase cards read this post first as your questions are most likely answered. I won’t be adding this to the best credit card bonuses due to the fact it is targeted.

will they match my offer (40k) from about a month ago?

I get a “you’re pre-qualified” banned in the United app for 40k miles on $2k with another 25k miles after $10k in 6 months. I know pre-qual and pre-approved mean different things to Chase, but has anyone been able to get around 5/24 with the pre-qualified offer?

Black star offers on the Chase app that also show a fixed APR are the only ones I would trust to get around 5/24.

if it is fixed APR it will get around.

check APR . if it is fixed , then it may bypass 5/24 .

Yes, if it’s fixed it can get pass 5/24

Good tip, thanks! My offer says APR it’s 24.99% but “will vary with the market rate.”

Doesn’t hurt to apply I guess, but the offer isn’t that compelling. I got 70k in 2016 for the usual old $3k spend in 90 days…

Thank you for the advice!

Yes, it bypassed for me. I applied using the “You’re Prequalified” link in the app a few weeks ago. Offer showed a fixed APR and I was instantly approved.

I am way over 5/24; this was my first chase card since the 5/24 umbrella was widened to include almost everything.

i got approved for this prequalified offer within the United App. That exact offer you mentioned. i am well over 5/24, closer to 25/24. I hadnt gotten a new chase card in 16+ months (as I just couldnt, had basically everything else I needed).

Received this mailer and applied a month ago. Working on the minimum spending now. The interesting thing I found is that the 200 statement credit doesn’t require booking a ticket. It showed up after I used it to fund a checking account.

When you applied for this, did you use the online link on the mailer? I was targeted with the same offer in the mailer above but when I go to the link it is only offering the 40K miles sign up + another 25K miles at a higher spending threshold, nothing about a statement credit. Does this mean I didn’t apply in time?

Also can confirm this mailer bypasses 5/24. I am at 20+/24.

This says “$200 United Travel Credit” is that the same as a statement credit? I don’t think I’ve seen that wording before.

I agree, it seems like you must spend $200 on a United flight in the first 6 months in order to receive the $200 credit.

It is a statement credit actually. The interesting thing I found is that you don’t need to buy a ticket from UA. This 200 statement credit showed up after I used the card to fund a checking account.

Here is the fine print:

$200 Statement Credit
This product is not available to either (i) current Cardmembers of this credit card, or (ii) previous Cardmembers of this credit card who received a new Cardmember bonus for this credit card within the last 24 months. With this bonus offer, you will qualify and receive a $200 statement credit after you purchase a ticket directly from United during the first 6 months from account opening. After qualifying, please allow 6 to 8 weeks for statement credit to post to your account. To be eligible for this bonus offer, account must be open and not in default at the time of fulfillment. Your participation in this program may result in miscellaneous income and may be reportable to you and the IRS, on a Form 1099-MISC (miscellaneous income) or Form 1042-S (Foreign Person’s U.S. Source Income Subject to Withholding) for the year in which the income is paid. You are responsible for any tax liability, related to participating in this program. Please consult your tax advisor if you have any questions about the impact to your personal income tax returns.

Can you cancel the card and still use the United Club Passes? They are usually delivered before the annual fee posts, so just wondering if you can use 2 sets without paying the annual fee.

They will disappear from your United account once you close the card, but you should be able to use the hard copies you print as long as they are not expired.

Any offers on the Business version with the AF waived?

Staradmiral

It says United travel credit, not statement credit. Please correct.

Damn this is so much better than the other bonus, I wonder how many people actually got targeted by this

Anyone know what method of delivery is used to Target? Image looks like a mailer but maybe some people get targeted online too?

Does anybody has link with fixed APR on this card?

The mailer I received is very similar to this one but instead of 40k miles and $200 credit, it says I can get 40k miles after $2k spend and additional 25k miles after total $10k spend in the first 6 months.
I am considering getting only because I guess I could bypass 5/24 that way.
