Citizen’s Bank Mastercard 5% Cash Back Through March 31 (Branch Only – Northeast US)

The Offer

No direct link, offer available in-branch only (CT, DE, MA, MI, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT)

  • Citizen’s Bank is offering an introductory offer on their Cash Back Mastercard to earn 5% cashback on all purchases through March 31, 2020.

The Citizen’s Bank Cash Back Plus Mastercard generally earns 1.8% back on all purchases. With this introductory offer, you’ll earn an extra 3.2% on all purchases for a total of 5% cash back.

Our Verdict

This offer is being advertised at Citizen’s Bank branches, and has been available since at least last week. Not sure how long it’ll last. Judging from various readers who’ve sent this in, it appears to be available at all Citizen’s Bank locations, but again, it requires a physical branch location and can not be done online.

5% for 4-5 months is pretty sweet, especially if you have large purchases to make, e.g. for the holidays or your upcoming tax bill. There doesn’t appear to be any limit to the 5% earn, though we don’t know how generous the bank is with credit lines which could hinder the ability to make large purchases. Update: some readers have gotten $500 credit limit from Citizen’s Bank in the past 🙁

Hat tip to readers Max, AR, Michael and PF

This is a formal challenge to see how quickly I get shutdown.

I just went in. You actually get the 3.2% after you hold the card until T end of May 2020. Let’s see how much CL I get!

I’m up for this challenge as well.

If you got the points consistently every statement as opposed to at the end, I’d jump on it. They are gonna be on my ass like white on rice once I start doing any volume through GCM.

I assume this bank has no churn data points since this is the first time I’m aware of them offering a deal this good.

No way to tell if it’s a valuable (scalable) offer like Wells Fargo or a pointless one like TD Bank.

I came out nicely with Wells Fargo. TD I didn’t apply for based on the data points. (And I did Okay on AARP, but that was my first experience, and I had no idea what I was doing.)

what td offer are you referring to?

I’ve been reading about this on reddit for a few days; literally the only reason anyone should get this card. After 03-31-20, when it goes back to earning 1.8%, then you’d be essentially losing out on 0.2%+. They’re all Visa Signatures, apparently, so you couldn’t even pitch it to someone with a lower credit score, and they don’t offer anything extra that could make the trade-off worthwhile for anyone else.

the title literally says mastercard. you’re saying it’s visa?

the card does have cell phone protection. just wish they offered world elite mc instead of just world.

Didn’t catch that–I believe they were Visas until a few months ago, which I remember from putting together a spreadsheet of flat-rate cards that are currently on the market. At that time, they would have all been Visa Signatures. It does look like they’re all World Mastercards, however, so the point still stands.

Many years ago I had a Citizens credit card. At the time it was a targeted 10% cash back offer. There was no limit to the cash back you could earn, but there was a limit of about $300 cash back per month that you could receive. So if you go really crazy with the earnings during the promotional period, it may take you several months afterwards to collect all the money.

I was in on a 10% cash back on this card years ago, too. Grocery stores and one other category, I recall. Bought lots of gas, grocery, and Amazon cards at the same supermarket the branch was located. I had to chase Citizens for my bonus. Finally got it, but what a pain. Their customer service dept is godawful.

I got a Citizen’s Bank card for a 5% promo back in the Redbird days. They gave me an absolute joke of a CL—$500, so it was basically unusable.

Any DPs on how tolerant this bank is to MS?

As a few others mentioned, Citizen bank had a 10% cash back promotion for 3 months, several years ago. I remember opening up the mailing, looking at it, and realizing immediately they had just made a big mistake. I was new to MS back then, but it was the good old days where there were tons of ways to liquidate. It was basically 5k at CVS, every day. It became a second job, and I learned that by paying them in cash I was able to reset my credit line (about 12K) quicker sometimes (I regularly came into the bank with about 7K). I profited about 15K off that card. They were pretty permissive then, but I can’t imagine it will be the same now?

That’s a great data point , hopefully similar is still true.

I wonder if a payment from their checking would work the same? It did with Wells Fargo, (although in their case you had to be careful, because WF is picky about overpaying. So you still had to wait 2-3 days for charges to post, but then you could pay and open credit line immediately.)

Would I need to show proof of residence in one of those states or just make it into the branch?

veeRob

My thoughts exactly. I’m based in TX but happen to be in NYC tomorrow. Seriously contemplating an hour train ride up to White Plains to open this. Am I crazy?

Kyle ❤️

That’s not terrible at all if you can swing the time. I was considering buying a plane ticket from CA. If it has no cap, this is a potential gold mine.

veeRob

Definitely have the time, the problem is I’m going for the holiday weekend so I assume the bank will be closed. Will have to go up on Tuesday before I fly back, but I have a late flight. Would be a pretty frustrating day if I get up there and can’t get approved or only get a $500 CL, though. Decisions, decisions.

Gerald
Gerald

I think there aren’t any branches in NYC. Closest ones seem to be in Yonkers and White Plains.

veeRob

Gerald precisely why I said I’d be taking a train to White Plains!

Most banks you just need to make it in the branch but to be sure you’ll have to wait for a data point.

Anyone else going from Ohio River valley area, car pooling might be an option.

I can’t speak for credit card applications, but I have been able to open a Citizen checking account in-person without living in the footprint state. (The banker even told me to use Venmo for DD.) I would call and ask before going too far out of your way. veeRob Kyle ❤️

veeRob

Thanks, will give that a try. Based on the comments I won’t be traveling to open this card.

veeRob

Change of plans… My friend had a rental car and ended up giving me a ride to the branch in Yonkers. I applied for the card with a super friendly banker and only took 5 minutes. Don’t know if I’ll get approved with an out of state address I will keep you all posted it. Prey for me to not have a $500 credit limit!

Jeremy
Jeremy

Any update?

veeRob

In 24 hours? No. I believe they said it would be 7 to 10 business days to get a decision in the mail but he gave me a phone number I can call after 3 days. I will try to follow up on Friday and see if there’s any news and will post here for sure.

veeRob

Holy shit.

I had low expectations for this deal but thought it’d be a fun day to go apply. I just called in and was approved for a $10,000 credit limit. I was “hoping” for $5k and so I am pretty excited. With no cycling, I should earn $2,000-$2,500 by the end of the promo (if they honor the bonus). Now to decide whether I want to cycle or not…

Jeremy
Jeremy

What do you plan to buy? The terms say gift cards won’t give 5% cashback

veeRob

Uh huh

Has anyone opened a Citizens CC with out of state address?

To add to a prior post, the credit limit on this card tends to be poor. I got the card around April 2019 for the sign-up bonus. The credit limit was $500. It takes several days for a payment to the card to apply to free up the available credit, so do not expect to be able to blitz the card multiple times a month.

Applied for a second Citizen’s Bank Cash Back card to try out the promotion and this one has a credit limit of $7400.

I have this card with a $8k limit, had it since 2017. Its a world Mastercard, so comes with cell phone insurance and also has no foreign transaction fees. Cash back is credited right away

Despite this being in Branch only, a link to their website would be helpful since there are so many banks with similar names.

for anyone curious the most southern locations I could find on their website are Cleveland Ohio and Washington DC.

Don’t get hung up on the 5% because it only equates to 2.5% when redeeming points for cash back. Redemption rates are less than 1cpp. Example 6K points = $25, 11K points = $50, 21K points = $100, 42K points = $200, 100K points = $500

If it is only 2.5% cashback, I would not apply for it.

JT

Wait, it says 5% *cash* back. Not 5 points. Presumably they’ll give you enough points to equate to 5% of a purchase?

Jeremy
Jeremy

How is that legal? I don’t think you posted the right thing, the picture ad clearly says 5% cashback.

Awesome offer if you have a big event like a wedding coming up next year – put your vendor deposits on this!

I bank here and was in the branch last week and saw the ad. When the cashier saw me looking at the ad she almost jumped on me to get me to sign up. Must be on commission or something. Funny thing is – I already have this card which pays 1.8% normally but she claimed I would have to apply for a new card to get the 5% deal. I’m still thinking about it as I’m currently chasing a bonus and putting everything towards that.

The leaflet I have says you have to apply by Nov 30th.

I had a preapproval offer with the 5% term pop up when I signed into my Citizens account today, so it may be possible to avoid a trip to a branch.
