City National Bank Credit Card Offers In-Store Cashback Offers (e.g. 5% at CVS, Staples, AMC, etc.)

Reader Ken reached out about an in-store cashback/points program on City National Bank (CNB) credit cards called Rewards Plus. There’s two part to it: one is an online shopping portal (not sure if their payout rates are competitive). But there’s another component to the program, which allows extra points for in-store purchases.

Some current offers showing:

  • 5% back at CVS (max $5 bonus)
  • 5% back at Staples (max $5 bonus)
  • 5% back at AMC
  • Home Depot
  • Kohl’s
  • Gap
  • There are lots of other offers for in-store purchases from local merchants, mostly restaurants and flower shops, but a bunch of other places too.

You have to log in the rewards account part of the credit card (cnbrewards.com) and then click on “Rewards Plus” to find the offers. Be sure to activate the offer and spend at the merchant during the correct timeframe.

We’ve posted many times about cashback/points deals on Wells Fargo cards with Wells Fargo Go Far Rewards. Not sure if CNB ever has the high 40% offers that we’ve seen from Wells Fargo Go Far, but overall they seem to be running similar kinds of offers and similar merchants.

Different banks will often share a single backend system, for example, Cardlytics runs the cashback program for Chase, Bank of America, PNC, BBVA and more. Reader aubergine suggests that Wells Fargo and CNB also have a single administer running their backend; if anyone knows which company runs these or if there are other banks using the same backend, please let us know in the comments.

Are their cards available nationwide? Any suggestions on best card to apply for to get these in store offers? i.e., sign-up bonus, no annual fee–thanks

I had used in Store cashback (BBB, Staples, Home Depot, some restraunts) from CNB rewards and offers are not refreshed as often. New offers pop up only 3/4 months once. Once activated we can use it only once. Double Dip with Ebates/Dosh is possible.

Interesting, I took a quick look. I second the comments about small/non-national shops being included, that seems like where it could have the most value.

I also looked at the earning rate of the portal, but I do not have time right now to do much with it (I have to do real work!). A few test points looked fairly middle of the road, e.g. 12x points at 1800 Flowers. I did do a quick copy-and-paste to here if anyone cares to take a look and maybe put it into a much nicer format.

I got a Chevron/Texaco 5x offer as well. It might be helpful to mention that I suspect they tailor the offers based on the “interests” you select. For me it was a separate pop up box that came up and I checked, 5 or 6 “interests” like Auto, Home and Garden, Travel etc. I suspect the Chevron offer may have come up for me because I selected “Autos” as one of the areas I was interested in.
