The Offer
Costco emailed out the following offer, available by going to a Costco club location and referring a friend as a new Costco member:
- Refer a friend as a new Costco member and you’ll each get a $20 Digital Costco Shop card.
- If they join Executive membership, you’ll each get a $40 Digital Costco Shop card.
The Fine Print
- To receive a Digital Costco Shop Card, you both must provide a valid email address. The referee must set up auto renewal of their Costco membership on a Visa® card at the time of sign-up. If the referee elects not to sign up for auto renewal, a Digital Costco Shop Card will not be emailed.
- Valid only for the referring member, new members and those whose memberships (Primary, Household and Affiliate) have been expired for at least 18 months. Limit one per household. Nontransferable and may not be combined with any other promotion.
- To receive the Digital Costco Shop Card, the Referee must be signed up for auto-renewal at the time of enrollment.
- The value of the Digital Costco Shop Card is determined strictly by the membership tier selected by the new sign-up: If the friend signs up for an Executive Membership, both the Referrer and the Referee will each receive a $40 Costco Shop Card, regardless of the Referrer’s current membership level. If the friend signs up for a Gold Star Membership, both the Referrer and the Referee will each receive a $20 Costco Shop Card, regardless of the Referrer’s current membership level.
- You and your guest must reference the Refer-a-Friend program to a Costco representative at the membership counter to receive this promotion. New and existing members will receive their Digital Costco Shop Card by email within 2 weeks of sign-up. Costco Shop Cards are not redeemable for cash.
Our Verdict
The referrer and new member will end up (together) with $40 on the regular membership which costs $65, or $80 with the executive membership which costs $130.
I assume this would work for anyone who mentions the promo at a Costco location, YMMV.
