[Expired] Discover: Buy Sam’s Club Membership ($45) and Get $45 or $25 Back (Worked On Renewal)

Deal has expired, view more Discover deals by clicking here

Update 10/26/19: Reader grant reports this worked on a renewal by using the e-mailed link.

The Offer

No direct link, targeted offer via email

  • Get a $45 statement credit when using your Discover card to buy a new Sam’s Club membership.
  • Others got the same offer, but for a $25 statement credit.

The Fine Print

  • Valid October 1 – November 30
  • Valid online with the link in the email, or you can use it in-club using the promo code from the email (promo code is 12056 for everyone, it seems)

Our Verdict

This is a targeted offer, no luck for me, but a lot of people got it. More people are seeing the $25 offer, but quite a few got the superior $45 offer which is essentially a free (or better than free) membership.

Most of us got a similar offer from Amex Offers to get $25 off. This Discover offer is better for those who got the $45 offer. Plus, this offer works in-club by using the code mentioned in the email. I’ll paste here the ‘Stacking the Deal’ section from the previous post as it might work here too:

Stacking the Deal

  • Use Discover for $45 or $25 back, depending which offer you received.
  • There are a bunch of Sam’s signup deals to stack this with; my guess is that buying membership without going through the link in the email should probably work to trigger the Discover statement credit offer, but no guarantees:
  • Click through a shopping portal, Topcashback is currently at 7% on membership and BeFrugal is 15% on membership. It may not track since you’ll be using a special referral link, but it’s worked for me in the past, and reader’s confirm that it’s working this time too. Just click through and then go to the referral page and  hopefully the browser cookies will retain the tracking.
  • Link your Amex card with Dosh and get $5 $20 back when you buy a Sam’s membership + 4% back on purchases. (If you are new to Dosh, you can signup with my referral code CHUCKS2 and get $1 bonus when you link a card.) Wait 24 hours from time of linking card to time of making purchase.
    • There are often other card-link deals from places like Acorns which can stack too; Dosh is the only one we see now.
  • New Sam’s members can get a slew of freebies by playing their treasure hunt.

Email I got said, “Buy a new Sam’s Club membership with your Discover® Card using the link below.”
Not sure that it will stack with portals then.

There is a concatenated link you can use to stack if you have the discover or amex offer, it worked for me https://www.reddit.com/user/bob_barker_2000/comments/bw0czl/sams_club_1year_membership_with_60_bonus/

For those like myself who only received the $25 offer from Discover, it seems it pays to use the AMEX Offer, since it’s the same $25 off but with AMEX it is guaranteed to stack with Dosh. Right?

In related news, I just got a new AMEX offer, get 4 additional MR points per dollar at Sam’s Club. No cap, and on top of regular earn. Pretty good I think, since they sell $500 VGCs?

Klemhuzzah
Klemhuzzah

They don’t sell $500 vgc. They sell $250 mastercard gc. They sell $500 amex gc, but they agc are not debit if that’s what you’re after.

I’m targeted for the Discover $45 promo, and I have an old AMEX Blue card that gives me 2% off all purchases plus 4% more in a Sam’s Club AMEX offer. Combine that with Dosh, and it seems like I should be doing some Sam’s Club shopping. 🙂 I haven’t been in a Sam’s Club in a couple of years, since the last lucrative AMEX deal there. In general the stores seem horrible to me — bad prices and bad selection, all in inconvenient large sizes. But I’ll buy a gift card anywhere. Online, I’m only seeing $200 gc’s with high fees. Is there a $250 MC in the stores? What is the fee on that? I remember a $500 gc a couple of years ago, but I also remember that they were issued by 2 different banks; one was easy to liquidate and the other was not. Are the $500s now all gone from the stores?

The $500’s are issued by AMEX. However, there are multiple DP’s, including my own, that when you try to buy a $500, the cash register is hardcoded to prevent anything over $250. We even tried to do $500 at the customer service desk.

Millennial Outrage

$4.88 fee on the $250 Vanilla MCGC. They’ve coded as debit (1% fee) on Plastiq for me.

I guess with Dosh and my large Amex return, buying some of those cards would be worthwhile. Do you know what bank issues them? And is there a pin code such that they could be liquidated for money orders at a cooperative supermarket?

iahphx

The Sam’s Club store I visited in MD had only $200 MCs and the fee was a very high $6 and change. Also, Dosh is now paying 10%, but with a $15/day cap. So the deal is really only great if you buy one gift card a day! Maybe worthwhile if you and a partner live nearby and can run into the store for a gift card each, but otherwise it’s a lot of hassle for some modest gain.

What if you already have a membership that expired a few days ago? Do you think this will fly for statement credit?

Celia
Celia

Sam’s treats memberships as a renewal if they expire within a certain time frame, I think 6 or 8 weeks. You can get around that by using a different email address/phone number.

For those wondering about using Dosh, it doesn’t support Discover.

Based on an earlier experience of a Discover / Sam’s Club membership deal, you shouldn’t be surprised if you never actually get the gift card and can’t do anything about it.

Klemhuzzah

The Discover deal is not a gift card. It’s a statement credit.

SamL

Okay, the Discover / Sam’s Club membership deal I did a couple of years ago was a gift card that I never could get, and in other cases I’ve also found Discover’s deals unreliable.

Topcashback is more actively seeking ways to deny payouts so keep that in mind if you use a special referral link or any code no on their site. I’d take my chances with BeFrugal before them.

Got the $45 offer, but already have a Sams membership.

Chuck “This signup link seems to give a $25 Sam’s gift card.” this one is dead, goes to the same offer you have listed below it ($20 GC/$30 savings).

Spouse had gotten a $25 one several days ago and today I just got a $45 one for my account so it looks like emails are still going out.

The staff at Sam’s knew nothing about how to enter a promo code. Anyone have feedback on that?

That seems kind of odd. Every promo in store has a code they have to enter.

I got the $25 offer. so I will pass since i wanted the $45 offer for a free 1 year membership.

My GF doesn’t live with me. Can I get her free card with this deal?

I know someone who used their friends virtual card in the app. If I remember correctly it doesn’t display the name on the virtual card. I would still probably use self checkout to avoid undue inquiry. Even better use scan and go to avoid the horrible checkout lines.

Celia
Celia

I only use the virtual card, at self checkout or at a cashier. I signed my spouse up last time and they couldn’t be convinced to get the card so I just use the virtual card, didn’t even bother to add myself as a complimentary one.

Sam’s=Walmart with a Paywall to keep the poors out. They are the same price as Walmart but make you buy 10x what you need. There is a reason Costco doesn’t run the same kind of deals on Membership… It’s worth it. That said free is free 🤷‍♂️

i think a lot of stuff in Sam’s Club are not available at walmart.

Those happen like once or twice a year while Sam’s offfers are year round with multiple stacking. Costco caters to a higher income crowd. I only wish Costco would add pickup and bring back self checkout.

Got email for $45 credit. Signed up a new membership using the link in the email. When do I expect the $45 credit? Thanks.

Grant

FYI William Charles Chuck I did a Sam’s Plus membership Renewal using the emailed link and got the statement credit without issue, so renewals are also eligible.

William Charles

Great DP, thanks Grant!
