Discover: Buy Sam’s Club Membership ($45) and Get $45

Update 4/8/21: More targeted.

Update 3/3/21: Another round went out, valid through April 30, 2021. Hat tip to reader Jim

Update 11/12/20: tonykony reports getting this $45 offer today via email, seems a new round went out now for 2020. Not sure if it’ll work when using the link for this other deal as the fine print here states you need to use the Discover link.

Update 10/26/19: Reader grant reports this worked on a renewal by using the e-mailed link.

The Offer

No direct link, targeted offer via email

  • Get a $45 statement credit when using your Discover card to buy a new Sam’s Club membership.
  • Others got the same offer, but for a $25 statement credit.

The Fine Print

  • Valid October 1 – November 30
  • Valid online with the link in the email, or you can use it in-club using the promo code from the email (promo code is 12056 for everyone, it seems)

Our Verdict

This is a targeted offer, no luck for me, but a lot of people got it. More people are seeing the $25 offer, but quite a few got the superior $45 offer which is essentially a free (or better than free) membership.

Most of us got a similar offer from Amex Offers to get $25 off. This Discover offer is better for those who got the $45 offer. Plus, this offer works in-club by using the code mentioned in the email. I’ll paste here the ‘Stacking the Deal’ section from the previous post as it might work here too:

Stacking the Deal

  • Use Discover for $45 or $25 back, depending which offer you received.
  • There are a bunch of Sam’s signup deals to stack this with; my guess is that buying membership without going through the link in the email should probably work to trigger the Discover statement credit offer, but no guarantees:
  • Click through a shopping portal, Topcashback is currently at 7% on membership and BeFrugal is 15% on membership. It may not track since you’ll be using a special referral link, but it’s worked for me in the past, and reader’s confirm that it’s working this time too. Just click through and then go to the referral page and  hopefully the browser cookies will retain the tracking.
  • Link your Amex card with Dosh and get $5 $20 back when you buy a Sam’s membership + 4% back on purchases. (If you are new to Dosh, you can signup with my referral code CHUCKS2 and get $1 bonus when you link a card.) Wait 24 hours from time of linking card to time of making purchase.
    • There are often other card-link deals from places like Acorns which can stack too; Dosh is the only one we see now.
  • New Sam’s members can get a slew of freebies by playing their treasure hunt.

Purchased a membership at the end of November 2020, but still haven’t gotten the bonus. I just submitted a complaint through the CFPB. This post should really be updated with caution about people not getting their bonus, even after 4-5 billing cycles.

Discover CS said that I was not qualified for SOME reason and I will not be getting the cashback. Never trust DISCOVER

Thought I was the only person who never received the cash back for purchasing a sams club membership. Discover customer rep is clueless

I joined sam’s club 10 days ago but my discover card was not charged. The membership is active but the $45 egc is still in order received status.

I have a similar situation – my discover card was not charged, the new membership is active and the $45 Sam’s savings membership that I purchased with a discover card is in “Canceled by Sam’s” status. I am not sure how that might have happened but I’ll take a free membership…

I must echo others. Having recently literally had a tooth pulled, this is worse. (Man, anesthetics really are something. I have no idea what transpired in that hour.) The CS rep says I didn’t get the offer because if I did, I would’ve gotten it by now. What a tautology. Anyways, some “feedback” has been submitted. Let’s see what happens.

Well, I’ll never do a Discover promo again! Activated Sam’s Club promo and bought a membership in December (verified by CSR). Never got the credit. After 4th billing cycle contacted Discover via chat. The CSR said I should wait another billing cycle. I said it’s already been 4. He told me I needed to call Discover and speak to a supervisor. After 20 minutes with the supervisor, he said I must not have met one of the conditions of the promo. Had promo email up, so went through the conditions line by line. Finally he said as a one time courtesy he would credit my account the $45 (made a big deal about it), then mysteriously (?) while on hold yet again, the line went dead. We’ll see if I get the credit or not SMH

Geez. What happened to the great customer service I’ve heard so much about? The way Discover has handled this has certainly put a bad taste in my mouth.

I received the promotion today and had to click on it to activate it. I also have a coupon (mailer) for a free $45 Gift card from Sams when I sign up. Guess it could be a MM if Discover comes through otherwise it would be free with the $45 GC other then sales tax. I will probably try and do it but geez Discover taking so long to pay a bonus and then some not getting it is ridiculous.

Here are the terms so anyone know if it will work with the $45 gift card?

Offer may not be combined with any other Sam’s Club offer or promotion. By accepting this offer, you authorize annual recurring charges to any card on file for your Sam’s Club membership fee(s) plus any applicable taxes at then-current rate every year until you cancel. Offer excludes Plus membership, membership renewal, membership upgrades, add-ons, additional memberships, pre-paid membership or Sam’s Club® Gift of Membership. Only memberships bought in the United States are eligible for this promotion. Only one statement credit per new primary member. Walmart® and Sam’s Club® associates are not eligible for this offer. Must be 18 or older to purchase a membership, and membership is subject to qualifications. Of all the strange business ventures in America, I’ve never understood how Sams Club can get people to pay to shop in their stores. Costco I can kind of understand, as the stores are modestly interesting and it’s good for people who are comfortable buying in bulk and aren’t interested in shopping for sales elsewhere. But Sam’s Club? Over the years, I’ve joined a couple of times (for free) to take advantage of weird gift card promos, but I otherwise wouldn’t ever consider shopping there. It’s just a sad place with inconvenient sizes and “meh” pricing.

Takes forever to receive the $45 stmt credit. My guess is Discover does not want customers to sign up and cancel their Sam’s membership shortly afterwards.
