Discover Codes NFC Google Wallet Transactions As “Online Shopping” For 5% Cash Back

This quarter the Discover it earns 5% cash back on online purchases and department stores. My original plan was to use Amazon Payments to send money to a trusted friend to score $75 in profit (the Discover it limits you to $1,500 in purchases per quarter). Unfortunately Amazon Payments was shut down in October, so I was only able to get one month in.

Today Happy_Harry from reddit.com/r/churning let us know that Discover codes all Google Wallet transactions that use NFC (near field communication) as online shopping and as such will earn 5% cash back. NFC is basically the tap and pay technology that you’re seeing a lot more of recently (the same tech that apple pay uses).

I only need to spend another $500 to max out this quarters $1,500 limit and earn the full $75 cash back. I’m not spending a lot of time in the States at the moment so this could prove difficult but I thought my readers might appreciate the heads up.

Also a little disclaimer, I haven’t actually done this myself so cannot guarantee it works. Has anybody else had success using this method?

PayPal seems to count too.

I’ve been paying everything I can with PayPal since this quarter started and Discover flags them for the 5% cash back every time.
