Evolve Money To Start Charging 3% Fees For All Prepaid Debit & Gift Cards

Evolve Money is a service that allows you to pay bills online. They recently started accepted credit cards but they charge a 3% fee. It looks like this fee will now be charged on debit & gift cards as well:

Evolve Money is dedicated to giving you the power to pay your bills whenever, wherever and however you like. We know that having the ability to pay by debit cards is important to many of our users.

Beginning next week, certain debit cards from smaller banks, as well as prepaid debit cards and gift cards will be subject to a 3 percent Bill Pay Fee on each payment.

This Bill Pay Fee will be waived for most major debit cards, cash load packs and Evolve Money credits. You can continue to use these payment methods free-of-charge.

Note: In the payment summary you will see the new fee amount when using a debit card for which the Bill Pay Fee has not been waived. If the debit card you are attempting to use has a fee, you will have the option to change your payment method before you complete a payment. We will send you a reminder before this change takes place.

We apologize for this inconvenience. We will continue to enhance Evolve Money with the features you request, such as the recent addition of payment by VISA, MasterCard and Discover credit cards. Plus, we have some more big changes we think you will like coming very soon.

If you have any questions, please contact Customer Support at [email protected]. As always, thanks for your continued support of Evolve Money.

I imagine all rewards earning debit cards will have this 3% fee charged. This makes Evolve Money useless for my purposes, I’m already able to pay bills online easily without any fees. I’m not exactly sure what Evolve Money’s value add is for consumers is anymore, but I suspect most of my readers will stop using the service.

This change does not go into effect until the start of next week. So if you have any plans to use the service before then, I’d recommend doing so now.

The only time I could imagine using this service is if there was a promo code available or they allowed some rewards earning debit card.

Thanks to @dvlsadvcate for letting me know.

What are your thoughts on prepaying bills before next week? My electrical bill wont close for 3 weeks, but i have a “debit” card that i would like to unload before the fee kicks in.

I actually prepaid all my bills ( gas, electricity, water, even store credit card. ex. Macy’s ,Lowe’s since I want to pay the VGC with full values so I can use it all at the same time. The only accounts I don’t want to mess up are my mortgage accounts). I just prepaid my electricity bills $999 and good for 4-6 months of my electricity bills.

that sucks

Evolve is trying to compete with US Bank Cash Plus for the category of most-heavily-nerfed-product.
