We reported on the new reward categories coming in April for the Citi Thank You Premier card. Currently the card earns 3 Thank You points for dining and entertainment, and 2 Thank You points for airline and hotels. Coming April 19 these numbers will be reversed, with dining and entertainment earning 2x and travel earning 3x.
There’s a report on Reddit indicating that new cardholders will continue to receiving the 3x dining and entertainment for one year. It sounds like this will mean that as of April 19, they’ll be getting 3x on the dining/entertainment category and the travel category.
The Reddit member reports receiving in the new-member welcome packet that new cardholders will continue to get 3x on dining and entertainment for one year from the date of approval. I’m interpreting that to mean that they’ll get these benefits without losing the benefits of 3x travel which is coming to all cardholders on April 19, but I could be wrong.
If this information proves correct, then this could a good time to apply for the Premier card, since we’ll be able to get the benefits in both categories for the first year. We’ll have to wait for more confirmations on this.
One more thing…My annual fee posted as $0
I just got this card in January as a replacement for my Chase Sapphire Preferred that had an annual fee coming due. I liked how the structure reflected my discretionary spending, specifically for the 3 points per dollar on dining and entertainment. I did not receive any recent extension on that benefit past the change in April, so I called and asked if I could be included. The agent didn’t know about the change in rewards terms, but gave me 5,000 points as a consolation.
Since that’s equal to about $1,666 in dining/entertainment spending, it helped take the sting out of the change.
Did you check the pamphlet that came with the card?

Since you recently applied for the card, you will earn 3x points on dining out and entertainment for one year from the date you became a Citi ThankYou Premier cardmember. After that, you will earn 2X points on purchases in these categories.
We’re also very excited to share that the annual fe will be reduced to $95 starting April 19, 2015.

I was approved recently and received the Citi info in the mail. The literature makes it sound like I’ll be receiving 3x on entertainment and dining for a year and 2x on airline and hotels, despite the change coming in April.
Thanks for that. It’s odd that they’re switching over old cardholders but they’re leaving new cardholders with the old terms.
can you combine Thank You points from the Prestige card and this card if you have both ? do they pool together like UR points ? thanks
