The Offer
Direct link to offer (be sure to sign up with a referral link, you can find and leave links on this dedicated page)
- Fairwinds Credit Union is offering a $175 referral bonus to the person being referred when they open a Preferred or Signature checking account with $25+ & do a qualifying Direct Deposit of $1,000+ within 60 calendar days of opening. Person referring gets a $75 bonus.
The Fine Print
- Offer available from January 29, 2024, through June 1, 2024. In order for both the referred individual and the referring FAIRWINDS member to each qualify for and receive the referral reward, the following conditions must be met: The referred individual may not have previously been an owner on or a party to a FAIRWINDS account; the referred individual must open a new FAIRWINDS consumer Preferred or Signature Checking Account with a minimum deposit of $25.00 at new account opening; during the eligible program period, the referred individual must open the new account using the referring FAIRWINDS member’s unique referral link; and the referred individual must receive in the new Preferred or Signature Checking Account a cumulative qualifying direct deposit(s) of $1,000.00 or more (excluding the new account deposit used to fund/open the account) within 60 calendar days of opening. A “qualifying direct deposit” is an Automated Clearing House (ACH) deposit of a paycheck, pension, or government benefit (including Social Security) from the government or your employer. Person-to-person transfers (such as Zelle, PayPal or Venmo) and bank transfers between a FAIRWINDS account or an account at other financial institutions or brokerages do not qualify. The referring FAIRWINDS member must be in good standing with the credit union and must be an owner of a FAIRWINDS consumer Spending or Checking account in order to be eligible for a referral reward. FAIRWINDS Credit Union employees are not eligible to receive any referral program rewards.
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
Easiest account to keep fee free is preferred checking account. This has a $10 monthly fee:
- Waived with either $1,000 in total monthly direct deposits, or
- with $10,000 or greater average monthly deposit balance*,
- or by maintaining an investment** account balance of $10,000 or greater.
Early Account Termination Fee
I wasn’t able to find any mention of an early account termination fee in the fee schedule.
Our Verdict
Not as good as the previous $200 deal, but not sure that will ever return. Obviously an even better if you can refer a few friends/family members as well. Do not share your referrals in the comments, you can share them in this linked post instead. We will add this to our list of the best checking bonuses.

I was told that members get 75$ referrals on 15th each months. I just can see You’ve earned $0 from 10 referrals. You have 0 referrals remaining. Did anybody get their payments? Can we track them?
Does anyone have any data points on what DD works to avoid the monthly fee?
note, the extra $50 is very easy. you just need to complete 3 things
For those maybe wondering about the additional $50 offer that you got in your email, yes both offers stack according to Miguel from CS.
Applied today with unfrozen Equifax and frozen Chex, quickly after submitting was secure-messaged by Fairwinds to unfreeze Chex in order to process application, did so and was approved 15 min. later, even though my Chex numbers are lol 😛
Successfully funded $500 with “debit card” option (Navy Federal cashRewards cc), funds were available immediately, still waiting to see how it codes, though these types of bank/credit union new account fundings with this particular card seem to code as neither a purchase (i.e. no cashback rewards) nor a cash advance (i.e. no cash advance fee/interest),
which is annoying and I’m curious if others have had this experience with this particular card. I know the SoFi 2% cashback card is also too smart to pay out rewards/points for new account fundings, but also does not code as a cash advance.
Yes, I’ve had the same experience with the NFCU cards. Although the transaction is a “purchase” they do not award any cashback and they do not count the transaction towards any new account SUB offer. I’ve been using my 2% Cashback Fidelity card and where it is a fairly new card for me I still have 8 months to go of no finance charges on purchases. So I don’t have to rush to pay the credit card off.
Denied for identity. Tried using a referral link with Equifax and Chex unfrozen and funding 500 + 5 via CCR. I see in comments someone suggesting to add middle name to Equifax but I don’t see that option. Unsure what to do next.
Typically you don’t “add” your name to your credit reports. You apply for a credit product, and your name appears there on the credit report as you typed the name on the application.
Sometimes just applying with a different device, like on mobile while turning off Wi-Fi, ends with a different result when having identity verification issues. Since they pull Chex, it would be best to apply multiple times the same day with slight variations of your data than trying over multiple days, because the same-day inquiries merge. If you discover they never even pulled your Chex though, you didn’t get a fair shot at opening the account and could consider trying again at a later date.
I would also thaw TU & EX, just in case they are getting any data on those freezes. Transunion is in bed with CreditKarma and Chex, and often includes Chex info on the full TU report.
Applied again with everything unfrozen, denied again. I’ll try applying on mobile next.
Applied for a third time on mobile device with wifi disabled. APPROVED! Thanks Gadget!
DP regarding funding with a CC – opened on May 22 online through a referral link and could fund a max of $505 ($5 to the Membership Share and $500 to the checking). Used my Fidelity VISA credit card and it worked as a purchase with 2% cashback.
I had to have the card set up as my preferred payment method in PayPal and used the pay by PayPal option in the application. Pay by credit card was not a choice.
another DP for CSP: declined due to insufficient funds for opening deposit. I had cash advance set to $100 and tried to fund $500. They closed the accounts. Will call and see if they will open without an addtional chex pull using different funding method.
Does anyone know if the direct deposit requirement is cumulative or if each deposit needs to be $1,000+? The previous offer explicitly stated ‘cumulative,’ but that wording seems to be missing this time. Appreciate any DPs—thanks in advance.
I just reviewed the terms for the current offer. It shows “a cumulative qualifying direct deposit(s) of $1,000.00 or more (excluding the new account deposit used to fund/open the account) within 60 calendar days of opening”.
The word “cumulative” is still included in the terms. It also shows “direct deposit(s)”, which makes it very clear that it would work with 1 DD of $1K+ or with multiple DDs totaling $1K+.
Therefore, Fairwinds made the requirements a lot clearer than most FIs do. 😉
Thanks, Erik — really appreciate the clarification. Good to know it’s cumulative again. Makes things a lot easier.
Eric, could you please let me know how to tell if an ACH triggered the bonus? Is it reflected in the transaction memo?
I don’t recall there being any indication of whether or not a DD counted as a QDD on the website. IIRC, Fairwinds usually paid out bonuses on the 15th or 16th of the following month so you might not know until then.
You’ll have to scavenger through the comments of this post and past Fairwinds posts to see what has worked for others in the past. However, I think that Fairwinds is more picky than most FIs.
I made one, but it’s showing as ACH. Any indicators that it’ll count as a DD?
No indicators. Fairwinds pay monthly so you have multiple chances. Wise with payroll reference works well
Not sure of anyone mentioned this yet, but after I got online banking set up I received an offer for an additional $50 that’s very easy to do, so this is like a $225 bonus, really.
“You’re on your way to $50!
Don’t miss out! There’s only 60 days left to complete 3 activities below.
I also got this email.
I funded my Emergency Savings account for this additional bonus with my Chase Sapphire Preferred directly, coded as cash advance. $500.
Did you use PayPal again for funding or just click debit card when funding?
I got the $50 already. Waiting on the $175 now.
I also got this email about a day or two after account opening but here is a warning: one bonus may cancel out the other one! If you look at the original $175 offer the terms read: “Member Referral Program rewards may not be combined with other offers or programs.” So please do your due diligence and confirm via either phone or email!
