Final Warning Regarding Referral Link Abuse

Allowing readers to post their referral links on dedicated posts has long been the bane of my existence. There is a small minority of readers that has decided that taking advantage of this and posting their links multiple times under different e-mail addresses and usernames is a good use of their time. Some readers decide to share their links where ever they want. This is a warning to all readers that you need to do the following:

  • Only post your links once per household, sorry no multiples.
  • Make sure you follow the rules in each individual posts and only post your referral links in posts that specifically state it’s allowed
  • Don’t offer any form of incentive for using your referral links. It would be great if this worked, but in practice it doesn’t as it’s impossible to police and we end up with both parties saying they didn’t get what’s promised.

If readers continue to abuse these rules we will be banning their IP address from leaving any comments and removing any and all referral links they have previously posted. If abuse continues to happen the simple solution is that we will no longer allow anybody to share their links at all and the community will be worse because of it. I’d also like to remind readers to taking a few minutes when selecting a link to use and try to select a reader that you recognize, that makes useful comments on the site. You can view their posting history by clicking the ‘i’ button next to their name. If all readers did this then people trying to game the system simply wouldn’t get any referrals and they would be wasting their time. Sadly this is not the case.

I’d also like to thank the 99% of readers that do the right thing and follow the rules and the readers that help us call out others that are abusing the rules.

Can you please just ban the violaters and not punish the rule abiders by totally banning? I’d still visit and contribute to your site regardless, but this is one of the things that makes your site the best

Gotta weed out the troublemakers.

Ban IP addresses without any mercy on first time violators and with no appeal.

I heard if you ask to be re-instated and just say you were doing it for the points, they may reinstate all your accounts.

Only if you are below 5 violations in last 24 months

Banning IPs is not the best solution because an IP doesn’t match to a person, for example, my entire company uses the same IP, if I were banned then everyone from my company would be banned.

Not only that but a home user can get a new IP by just unplugging the modem for like 5-10 minutes.

That’s right! Didn’t even think about that!

1) Your first scenario, in which another employee at the same company would actually use their work computer, read this site and comment on it for referrals and then be potentially banned, is so remote that it would apply to practically no one

2) How many people do you know of would go and unplug their modem? More sophisticated methods to do this.

Many corporate networks have one public IP (Firewall, NAT router..)

Not at all, I work for one of the largest hospital systems in the country – that’s 10s of thousands of employees around the USA that all show up under the same Boise, ID IP address associated with the company (city changed in this example from my actual employer’s) whenever they are logged into the network at work. Literally tens of thousands of people

Snorlax

Eh, … I pretty much solely post on here from work.

I don’t discount that out of the tens of thousands of people who work at my company’s 20 or so worldwide locations one other person might visit here from work too. All of our traffic from all those locations is routed through the same NAT so has the same IP.

Just ban referrals. It changes the dialog from people working together to help each other collect bonuses to competing against each other for self interest

I agree. There are plenty of other places to get referral links. This site is awesome enough without having to add more work to your plate to keep it that way.
Thanks for all you do, Doc!

It’s more than disappointing that DoC has to put out a reminder like that. I also think that cc links are not necessary here. I know that not every DoC reader is on reddit, and r/churning has its own requirements for referrals, but then: referrals are in a secondary orbit anyway. Nobody is entitled to them in the first place. They don’t have to be part of this site.

The one exception I would make are the temporary links for bank accounts or similar programs.

+1 – when pages get clogged up with people posting referral links it makes it so much harder to find actual useful information in the discussion.

You are exactly the reason posts like this are necessary… narcissism and greed are your motivation… now you know the truth… do you feel set free? You need Jesus and an attitude adjustment!!

Is there a post that has everything I can post my referral link for?

JuicyJosh
JuicyJosh

It’s addressed in any post where it would be applicable. Even if it wasn’t, common sense should prevail over clear greed. Read the blog post top to bottom that caused this lastest warning (incredible bank). It’s clear to see some people are only out for themselves no matter the cost.

Hey DoC

1) Can this post be part of one of the top navigation menu? I’m a regular reader for the blog but I wasn’t aware of the one per household rule. Btw, my spouse and myself follow the blog with seperate email accounts and you still haven’t reached our dinner table conversations 🙂

2) Can one paste the referral link as a reply to the comment with first referral link? Most users pick the first few links.

Thanks for everything you do.

The instructions/rules should be their warning. If they abuse it just ban their IP. Not like they didn’t know what they were doing was against your rules.

Frito Pendejo

There are many ways to change your IP. Proxies, Tor, VPN, paid services, etc.

There is no real way to police it

MoreSun

But you reach a point where it isn’t worth the hassle for them. Anyone can type in a fake email, proxies etc. are a next level step.

Its hard to find the dedicated referral page for each card on here tbh, maybe a seperate tab for referrals only?

joE
joE

It’s not. just read the related posts and DoC will provide a link within the body of the post telling you exactly where to go to post your referral, what to do, what not to do etc.

Amex offers referrals on every card, I have a hilton honors ascend, there is not palce to post a referral for that card, I would rather use a readers link over some tpg or likewise link.
