From My Inbox: Year Reset on Old Blue, and [Targeted] Redbird $20 Bonus with Tax Refund

 Old Blue Reset

We reported A Couple of Updates for Old Amex Blue that some folks report hearing from Amex that their $6500 original spend requirement is based on the calendar year, not the anniversary year. We theorized that it’s the newer Old Blue cardmembers who have this new rule, since the old terms definitely were that it’s based on the anniversary year.

I’m a new Old Blue member, since September 2014, so I wondered if my year got reset in January 2015. Amex replied that mine is dependent on the anniversary year, not the calendar year. Here’s the Amex reply:

Most others in the comments to the previous post also reported the same. I wonder if it’s possible that those who were told otherwise were just hearing the ideas of a misinformed rep. Please let us know if you have a confirmed report of a reset based on the calendar year.

Tax Refund Bonus

In other news, on my Redbird card (or, more accurately, the Redbird card I ‘manage’), I received a targeted email to get $20 if I deposit my federal tax refund into my Redbird account. Some folks on Reddit are also reporting having received this email, but many did not receive it, so it appears targeted.

I did not get this offer on my Serve account, which is registered in my own name; only on the Redbird, registered in a kind relative’s name. According to the FAQ, you can’t deposit a tax refund into an account not in your name, and if you attempt to do so it will be declined.

The fine print:

  • Federal tax return must be filed by April 15th, 2015
  • Must receive your refund by May 31st, 2015

We previously reported on a targeted offer that some Serve members were getting of a $20 tax refund bonus. Now we’re seeing the same on Redbird.
