How To Get ‘Matched’ To The 35,000 American Express SPG Offers

American Express has increased the sign up bonus on their Starwoods Preferred Guest credit cards to 35,000 points ($3,000 spend for personal card and $5,000 spend for business card). This is good news for people that haven’t applied before (you can only get the sign up bonus once per lifetime now), but bad news for people that recently applied under the 25,000 offer or 30,000 point targeted offer.

spg card 35k offer

American Express’ official policy is that they don’t match sign up bonuses, but they’ll will offer courtesy points. Here’s what you should do to receive some courtesy points.

  • Don’t message, online representatives do not have the ability to award courtesy points.
  • Call and say you’re disappointed that a new higher bonus became available so recently after you applied.
  • The first representative will probably offer you 3,000 points. Ask politely to be escalated to a manager and repeat your disappointment in American Express due to the bonus change.
  • The manager has the ability to award the 10,000 point difference, they won’t always offer it but they should offer at least 5,000 points. Remember to stay polite but push for the 10,000 point difference.

No guarantees it’ll work, but that’s your best chance of getting the additional points. The courtesy points should post within a business day. If they say they’ll add a note to your account and the points will post when your minimum spend posts, ask for the points to be added instantly as the notes are basically useless. You can view other credit card issuers matching policies in this linked post. You can also share your SPG referral links in this linked post, just make sure you read the post carefully otherwise your comment + link will be removed.

Report how you went getting matched in the comments below.

Offered $50 credit and no points by initial rep, but got the 10k SPG points when I spoke with a manager — he offered without me asking for a specific amount. I’ve been an SPG personal card holder for about 12 years, so I made sure they knew that and I imagine it likely helped.

Awesome!

The $50 credit feels like a courtesy credit that front line CSR are authorized to issue, usually when customer calls to cancel. (rather than transferring customer to retention dept., front line CSR are known to be able to offer a little something)
And the 10k is definitely a huge success! Congrats!

Prob should have mentioned I got the biz card in early Jan.

I picked up an extra 5000 points by calling in (I got the the 30k offer for the business card back in September).

Hey Colin, when you called you had already spent $8k on the card, right?

I applied for a business card on Saturday and was approved, ended up receiving the card in the mail yesterday, and have been unsuccessful in getting anyone to match the 35k offer.

I spoke online w/ a representative (before checking DoC, shame on me) and he placed a request w/ the marketing team, and told me to check back in 2-3 weeks, but confirmed he was unable to do anything.

I then spoke w/ a rep on the phone and she was unable to do anything, she then passed me off to someone in phone applications, and their manager, and they were unable to help me. I figure it’s worth one more call and try and speak w/ a manager on the customer service end.

I applied on March 1 and was approved immediately. So far I haven’t receive the card, but I just called the representative this morning, and told them that the offer changed within 24 hours of my application. Similar to your case, the representative told me that she would file an application for me, but she emphasized that there’s no guarantee it would work and the review period would take 1-2 weeks.

I was told 6-8 weeks. Wonder how long the wait really is?

To update this.

I called 2x. My first rep wasn’t much help, so I HUCA, and then the 2nd rep was helpful but said he’d have to put in a request, and I’d hear back in 4-6 weeks, I asked to speak w/ a supervisor and the supervisor very quickly honored my 10,000 points request ask.

It pays to be persistent.

I have had my card about 5 weeks and received the 25,000 bonus. I called about a “match” and completely struck out, both with the front-line CSR and his manager. It was worth a try, I guess.

Trying huca. I had to call 4 times when the offer went up to 30k but was eventually offered a 5k courtesy adjustment. Persistence is the key.

Guys, I can’t thank you enough for your encouragement and for the success stories that you’ve posted, as well as descriptions of your phone calls. I hate talking on the phone, but you inspired me to HUCA. After the first offer of 3000 points, a supervisor did award me 10,000 points. Thanks again! DoC, you rock!

I got my card for 25K in January (2016) and got my bonus points in Feb. Saw this page and successfully called and got my 10k bonus.

They did discuss this with management for about 3 minutes having me hold as they reviewed my account but I’m just happy I got the bonus.

Thanks!

Opened my SPG in 9/15 with 30k offer, called and told them how I saw the new offer while checking a reservation on the SPG site and had stayed at several properties just this year. Mentioned I was kinda let down since I’ve already put 9k on it and if there was any sort of courtesy adjustment. He looked at the account, pointed out I had 10k points awarded for referrals, told I’ve been getting my family to sign up. He offered me 3k, I said that’s nice, but was really hoping I could kind of make up for the new offer…

…then he offered 10k!! I love him, but he should never be in sales. He never even mentioned my having a SPG Biz, wonder if I should try for that separate…

Hmm, I applied during the last 30k promo last summer. Probably a stretch at this point.

My brother requested I send him a link to sign up for the card so I can get the bonus referral based on your post “American Express Starwoods Preferred Guest (SPG) 35,000 Point Offer [Personal & Business] – Highest Ever”. I read in the post that they may offer courtesy points but figured since I signed up 6 months ago, they’d never do it, so I didn’t call. But then my bro sent me this post and I thought what the heck. The initial rep offered 2500 points (I applied when the bonus was 3k) and asked to speak with a manager to get the full 5k. He transferred me and the supervisor gave it to me with no issue. I was probably on the phone 7 minutes in total. Thanks DoC, I’m so excited to use my extra points!

I applied about a week ago with the 25,000 offer, just called and the rep was a little reluctant at first, but then put me on hold for about 30 seconds. Came back and said he couldn’t change the offer, but his supervisor approved a “gift” of 10,000 points!

Literally the exact same scenario for me.
