[Expired] Giant, Stop&Shop, Martin’s: 3x Fuel Points on Visa Gift Cards (10/16-10/22)

Deal has ended, view more Giant deals by clicking here.

The Offer

Stop&ShopGiantMartin’s

  • Giant/Stopandshop/Martin’s have an offer showing in their upcoming circular for October 16 – October 22: Get 3x fuel points on the purchase Visa gift cards.

Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

Gas Points Details

Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon (max $1.50 discount in most). Points can be used at partner Shell locations.

Points are now usable on groceries as well, with a value of 100 points equaling a $1 discount.

  • You have 30 days to select whether you want to use the points on gas or groceries, then 30 days to actually use them.
  • See the FAQ for more details. Some of the details vary by area and store.
  • Points usually are available immediately, but I’ve had on occasion where it took a day until they showed up and were usable.

Our Verdict

Normally it’s 2x points not 3x. Fuel points can be used to discount groceries as well, making these deals more widely useful. Use a card that earns a bonus at the grocery.

Note: many SS/Giant stores have implemented a $2,000 limit in gift card purchases each day (previously the limit was $5,000). They also require putting it all on a single card.

What cards are you using to purchase? Any cards have a grocery category bonus this quarter?

Anthony I’m using the Freedom first year 5x bonus.

Freedom Flex has 5x for the first year. I have a couple of Citi cards that mailed me 5x bonuses that include groceries. Amex Everyday Preferred has 4.5x assuming you do 30 transactions in a statement period.

Giant in PA only had $50 and $100 Visa Gift Cards, which is not interesting. They also only had that $50 and $100 Mastercards.

I have bought $500 cards at least 10 times in the last two years, they always had plenty of them. Looked like they removed them.

Anybody experienced the same?

Stop and Shop pulled the variable cards off the racks a while ago, at least at some stores. But they’ve been back for a while. I think it had something to do with fraud prevention.

My local Giant had all variable cards 2 or 3 weeks ago, when there was the 2x deal on Mastercards.
Now all variable cards are gone. No idea what happened. I might check later this week, or the second Giant in town.

For those who use Stop & Shop points at Shell, I received an email from Shell yesterday for a bonus 31cent/ gallon discount. Email subject is: “🍬 👻 No tricks—only treats! Save 31¢/gal”. Terms of the email make it seem as though it’s targeted to select people. You have to fill up once with at least 5 gallons by 10/31, and the 31cent discount will then be issued by 11/6. That deal, stacked with $1.50 from a $500 VGC, 5cents from Shell Gold Status, and 5cents from Dunkin Donuts would be $1.91/ gallon in discounts with my local Shell’s currently charging $1.99-$2.09/gal.

Also, now with the new program you have to actually select how you want the points to be applied. I had $2+ dollars/ gallon in rewards a month or two back and typed in my number at Shell and it said I only had 10cents in rewards. I went online on my phone and applied $1.50 of rewards to gas and then it showed the full discount a minute later on the pump.

If you stick it with GetUpside, it would be a moneymaker.

From the pictures in the ads it shows GO point, I think 3x GO point is different with fuel point, isn’t GO point only works on your next grocery shoppings? Last week I tried the 10x google play gift card deal, no fuel points posted, since I didn’t choose to convert fuel point to GO point, eventually I didn’t get the GO points either. Am I doing anything wrong?

CC Which grocery chain? The Giant ad is showing it as fuel points, and I can confirm that they’re earning the normal fuel points.

CC I’m not familiar with Stop & Shop’s program, but it says here GO points can be redeemed for fuel: https://www.fuelrewards.com/fuelrewards/stop-and-shop

Thank you Avi! Looks like I didn’t activate the GO reward program, I have been using old fuel program in the past, didn’t realize that you have to active it first. Thank you so much. I’ll give it a try this week.

You can also buy 20 gallons of diesel and pour it into your oil tank for home heating.

When there’s a promotion, it’s always either 2x on Mastercards or 3x on Visas.

What do you mean? It’s been like that for the last 12 months. I meant generic gift cards up to $500 not third-party gift cards.

Unsure your reference to “normally it’s 2x.” Maybe you meant 2x for these deals, except that’s not accurate, as (checking your archives and gcgalore) these vgc and mcgc deals routinely go back and forth from 2x to 3x and back. OTOH, “normally” if applied to any gift card purchases in general, at least at Martin’s is 0x…. as in no points. (Somebody correct me if that’s now dated. Perhaps you were thinking Kroger, when yes, “normally,” merchant gc’s there get 2x (but not variable load vgc, etc.)

inadvertent data point from yesterday’s shopping at a Va Martin’s…. In two separate transactions, wife and I bought single 500 vgc….. and in both cases, they initially rang up as contributing ZERO points…. In each case, had to go to the CSR counter — where staff each time (unfamiliar with the new promo, but easily convinced by the store ad in front of them) said they would manually added on 1,500 points. (but they didn’t give us a receipt ….. for each manual add) First time this ever this happened. What’s worse, only one of the manual adds worked. Annoyed. (esp. at this particular martin’s is 45 minutes away)

Anybody else having problems with the promo not automatically working this time? (at Martins, S&S or Giant?)

I think you can call to get points added. Haven’t done it personally, just read DPs.

Points not posting — this is something my wife runs into often with Giant PA. Esp. at the beginning of the promotion week. She’s a regular at the customer service desk.

Yes. One of the MC ones from a few months ago never registered points for entire week at Giant of PA. Had to go to service desk to get them added.

At my local Giant stores, the points for these 2x/3x deals never show on the receipt (that big fat “0” is always scary-looking), but they post to my account about half an hour later. Also, I recommend buying in increments of under $2000 because otherwise they have to pull out a huge binder and write down all your info. I buy 3x $500 to avoid that.

Thanks for that data point Avi…. At Martin’s, they’ve always posted automatically before, but not yesterday….. Maybe I should have waited before going to counter. (where things got really scrambled)

escot I vaguely remember them visible on the receipt at Giant awhile ago, but for at least the last year they’ve never appeared on the receipt, and every time automatically appeared in my account later without any intervention from me.

I agree. I was going to complain that it was for GIANT gift cards and it turns out it IS for VISA gift cards instead.
