Has Citi Killed The 10% Rebate On The Citi American Airlines Cards? (No, It Hasn’t)

A few weeks ago Charlie from Running With Miles asked me if he had missed some news as he couldn’t find the 10% rebate being mentioned on the Citi American Airlines card and had recently been on vacation. I told him at the time that no news had been issued regarding that benefit, but I also couldn’t find it mentioned either. Eventually Charlie was able to find this page that specifically mentions that this benefit is still available.

I only mention this because today both The Short Final & Frequent Miler have posts on this benefit being removed for new cardholders. To be fair to both those sites, both Citi & American Airlines tweeted out saying that the benefit was discontinued so I can’t really blame them. It also is odd that it’s no longer clearly being advertised, maybe this is a benefit Citi is planning on removing or maybe they forgot to update that application link that does clearly mention the 10% rebate. My general rule of thumb is that twitter reps don’t know what they are talking about, but it can be difficult when traditional media departments don’t respond to inquiries.

It’s Shiti bank so who knows what the answer is.

Citi has a history of quietly removing references to benefits from marketing materials (including web pages) for cards before officially announcing them to existing cardholders. I wouldn’t be surprised if an official announcement is coming soon.

Possibly, but a benefit worth a maximum of 10k miles annually (which is really something you’d only expect a churner, big spender or frequent flyer to top out on) I think is such small potatoes Citi might not bother.

Well 2 round trip biz class transcon tickets are 100k AA miles. so it’s not that hard to max out the benefit.

Maybe because I’m on an iPhone & Safari but when I click the “this page” link I see no mention of the 10% back.

Just checked on Google Chrome on my desktop, and it’s there.

Tried it on my desktop site and now I see it. Citi gonna Shiti though (ie could be an infamous Citi IT glitch that it’s still showing) so before I’m on board with it’s still active I’m hoping to see a DP from someone without an Aviator who just booked a flight and got miles back.

This would be awful, this is the best perk on the card besides free checked baggage. Guess I better book all my flights now

The barclay AAviator version still has it. Just sign up for that one and get some AA miles.

I think it is safer if you have both citi plat and barkley aviator, right?

lol. Barkley.

Thank you for posting this. I thought I was freaking out yesterday when I couldn’t find it. Good to know I wasn’t and sad to know it was (maybe?) killed off.

I redeemed a flight yesterday, and DID get the 10% back, but under details it does state “Aviator Redemption Bonus.”

I hold both Citi Biz and Barclays Personal AA cards.

I hold the same 2 cards, and it’s my understanding that in lieu of the 10% back, the Biz Platinum instead gives you reduced Awards for specific routes.

But cardholders of any AA cobrands (both Citi and Barclays) can book reduced mileage awards, not just the business cards.

The business card never had this benefit anyway, so of course it would have come from your Aviator card.

I recently redeemed 240,000 miles and received 10,000 miles.
Seems about right with the fine print ” receive 10% of your redeemed miles back upto 10,000 miles per year”

DP: I got the rebate on award tickets booked this Monday

Looks like it’s dead….the $100 aa discount voucher after 20k spend and renewal of card has taken it’s place. sigh….

I stand corrected. Just got a new card, checked the benefits, and it is included.

i booked a flight a flight with miles on April 4 and my 10% bonus posted a few days later.

Right. The new benefits (like 2x restaurants) aren’t scheduled to take effect until July 22nd, so I would expect existing cardholders to be able to use the old 10% back benefit until least then….perhaps until the end of this year?

Or maybe Doc is right and the benefit is staying and just not getting marketed in most of the promotional materials.

Datapoint: I booked an award flight with AA on 5/20 and my 10% redemption bonus posted yesterday.

They drop that benefit, and they drop me too. I’ll cancel both my personal and biz cards. I can hardly get any use out of AA miles anyway. No availability ever where I fly.

If you don’t use your AA miles anyway why would you pay the $95 AF on both of those cards? This benefit by itself is definitely not worth that to someone who has little to no use for AA miles.

I just checked my card benefits, I have both the Executive and Plat Citi AA cards. Under travel benefits the Plat cards shows the 10% rewards reduction (I’ve had the card for 6 months) my Executive (I’ve had it 2 years or so) does not show the 10% rewards reduction under travel benefits

Anyone can easily check if they still have the 10% rebate by checking the credit card benefits on their online banking account. I don’t understand why the confusion.

Reddit has a dp with no Aviator from 5/22 of receiving their 10% back https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/8li6g3/daily_discussion_thread_may_23_2018/dzi3c9z/?context=3
