Has Citi Killed The 10% Rebate On The Citi American Airlines Cards? (No, It Hasn’t)

A few weeks ago Charlie from Running With Miles asked me if he had missed some news as he couldn’t find the 10% rebate being mentioned on the Citi American Airlines card and had recently been on vacation. I told him at the time that no news had been issued regarding that benefit, but I also couldn’t find it mentioned either. Eventually Charlie was able to find this page that specifically mentions that this benefit is still available.

I only mention this because today both The Short Final & Frequent Miler have posts on this benefit being removed for new cardholders. To be fair to both those sites, both Citi & American Airlines tweeted out saying that the benefit was discontinued so I can’t really blame them. It also is odd that it’s no longer clearly being advertised, maybe this is a benefit Citi is planning on removing or maybe they forgot to update that application link that does clearly mention the 10% rebate. My general rule of thumb is that twitter reps don’t know what they are talking about, but it can be difficult when traditional media departments don’t respond to inquiries.

Just wanted to add a DP that I redeemed 140k miles today and got the 10k bonus in the same line item in activity. I hold a Citi Personal AA Plat.

The main reason people aren’t finding this info is because they’re looking at Citi sites, not AA sites. (Note that the link above is from an AA site, not a Citi site.)
This is a benefit implemented by AA, not by Citi. It’s implemented by AA as soon as it sees that you have a qualifying Citi AA card AND/OR a qualifying Barclay AA card. Because this benefit is available from two banks, but doesn’t stack (ie, doesn’t double) if you have qualifying AA cards from both banks, it’s getting difficult for the banks to document EXACTLY how the benefit works without mentioning their competition! So THAT’S WHY I think it’s disappearing from the Citi pages, and you have to look at AA pages to find the benefit info, because it’s a lot easier for AA to mention both Citi and Barclay than for Citi to mention Barclay or Barclay to mention Citi.

Anyone can easily check if they still have the 10% rebate by checking the credit card benefits on their online banking account. I don’t understand why the confusion.

I just checked my card benefits, I have both the Executive and Plat Citi AA cards. Under travel benefits the Plat cards shows the 10% rewards reduction (I’ve had the card for 6 months) my Executive (I’ve had it 2 years or so) does not show the 10% rewards reduction under travel benefits

They drop that benefit, and they drop me too. I’ll cancel both my personal and biz cards. I can hardly get any use out of AA miles anyway. No availability ever where I fly.

If you don’t use your AA miles anyway why would you pay the $95 AF on both of those cards? This benefit by itself is definitely not worth that to someone who has little to no use for AA miles.

Right. The new benefits (like 2x restaurants) aren’t scheduled to take effect until July 22nd, so I would expect existing cardholders to be able to use the old 10% back benefit until least then….perhaps until the end of this year?

Or maybe Doc is right and the benefit is staying and just not getting marketed in most of the promotional materials.

Looks like it’s dead….the $100 aa discount voucher after 20k spend and renewal of card has taken it’s place. sigh….

I stand corrected. Just got a new card, checked the benefits, and it is included.
