Hilton Moves To ‘On Demand’ Housekeeping

Hilton has made a change to housekeeping and you’ll need to request your room be cleaned as it won’t be cleaned daily. There are some nuances to this change:

  • It doesn’t affect any luxury brands (Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, and LXR)
  • Rooms will be automatically cleaned on the fifth day for extended days
  • You can request housekeeping by contacting the front desk

I much prefer when hotel brands incentivize not receiving daily house keeping (e.g Hyatt tested offering 250 points). Hilton also recently replaced free breakfast with a small dining credit. I suspect both of these changes are just cost cutting exercises’. We know that consumers behavior changes when we move from an opt out to an opt in model, although I wonder if this will causes staffing issues as hotels won’t know exactly how many rooms will need to be cleaned. I personally never use daily housekeeping anyway because I find it unnecessary, but I’d still rather just opt out rather than needing to call down to the front desk when I do want my room cleaned (first world problems I know).

The lack of daily cleaning doesn’t really bother me but the last time we stayed at Hilton Garden Inn, before leaving for the day we asked for clean towels and were told to ask when we returned. We returned, asked the front desk for towels and were told no towels since housekeeping had left for the day. We were given towels from the fitness room which aren’t much more than glorified wash clothes. Management blamed it all on COVID as if they couldn’t find one person to stay and wash and dry towels to be left at Front Desk. When you don’t have an excuse, blame it on COVID.

We stayed for three nights at the Roosevelt (Waldorf) in New Orleans last week, and can give you a data point that at least one Waldorf IS doing this. They told us at check in we would need to request any housekeeping, as none would be automatically performed.

Unfortunately this means that there are a lot fewer housekeeping jobs.

I had housekeeping at Hyatt SFO attempt to barge into my room to use the phone, years back. The never even cleaned the glass on the desk properly prior to my actual arrival, but expect me to allow them into the room so that they can report cleaning it during the stay?

It’d be great if they actually clean the room before your arrival, and not try to make show of cleaning it during the stay.

After paying over one thousand dollars a week to stay there then they charged three hundred and fifty dollars ad a deposit.Definitly will stay somewhere else next time.Quality of service is no better than a Motel 6.

On the up side, you don’t need to be out of the room at the usual cleaning time.

Hotels that have done this (especially Residence Inn) often pick up trash left outside the room and towels can be swapped at the front desk. It requires more effort but not too much more, and the rest we’re fine with.

Considering the vast majority of stays are 1 to 3 nights. The rooms will still be serviced more than once every 5 days..
Personally I tell housekeeping not to clean my room.. For over 25yrs .. I never saw the need to change out my sheets everyday.. Usually I would see the housekeeper by my room.. Dump my trash if needed and change out towels and ask for a pack of coffee..
Yes it does have cost savings .. But its also environmental by not having to use chemicals over and over.. Reducing water usage power etc. It also helps with the longevity of an employee by lowering repetitive injuries or wearing them out…
I don’t mind leaving a tip.. Sometimes ppl just look at 1 aspect only vs the whole…

“First world problems, I know”.
We never should feel guilty airing first world issues on a first world website. Who else is reading this?

Technically “First world problems” is a broadly used english colloquialism. It’s just code for saying you know the issues/complaints you are airing could sound petty and superficial to some. You really think the statement “first world problems” when talking about specific preferences would be well received as a “disclaimer” for someone living in a third world country? People say it to ward off quick to judge commenters, but I agree it’s superfluous since it obviously doesn’t work. 😂

You keep using that phrase, even though it doesn’t mean what you think it means.

Like most people, you probably don’t know that terms like “first world” and “third world” are disparaging and outdated geopolitical classifications left over from the Cold War.

So what does it mean, since no one but you knows what “first world” means. Please enlighten us.

You’re just proving my point. Maybe Google something once in a while so that other people don’t have to spoonfeed you definitions of words. 😉

Nah, I’m not going to use often euphemistic terms like “developing nation” when loads of those places are stagnating or devolving into anarchy. I’ll stick to “civilized” and “uncivilized”.
