How To Maximize The Dell $100 Semi Annual American Express Business Platinum Credit

The American Express Business Platinum card now offers a semi annual $100 dell credit. You get one credit from January through June and then a second credit July through December. In this post we will look at how to maximize this benefit. Make sure to enroll your card in this benefit here first.

Dell Rewards (3%)

Update: On March 10th, 2019 changes were made so you need to spend $500 within 12 months to receive the 3% rate.

Dell offers a rewards program called ‘Dell Rewards‘. After each purchase you’ll receive up to 3% back on future purchases.

Student Discount (10%)

Dell offers a 10% student discount via UNiDAYS.

Military Discount (10%)

Military members are also offered a 10% discount.

Shopping Portal

Dell is available as a merchant on most shopping portals. Regular rates seem to be around 5%, but it has gone as high as 20% in the past. Remember you can set up notifications when portals hit a certain rate. We will also post whenever big rates are offered.

Coupon Codes

Dell has a dedicated page for coupon codes that can be found here.

Price Match

Dell offers a price match guarantee, if you find a lower price advertised identical electronic product or equivalent then they will match that price. You can either call or chat to get price matched.

Reader Andrew D recommends using PCPartpicker for finding items to price match to. If the price drops after you purchase on Dell.com you can also get the difference refunded, but that’s only if the price decreases on Dell.com and not on a competitors site.

Keep in mind even though you can initiate the price match via chat, it’s completed by phone meaning you can’t stack it with portals or any American Express offer that requires a Dell.com purchase. Update: It’s actually possible to get a quote e-mailed.

AmEx Offers

American Express frequently has AmEx offers for Dell, currently there is a 10% back offer for example.

F.A.Q’s

Do gift card purchases work?

Dell branded gift cards will not work as they are sold through Cashstar and won’t code correctly. Dell also sells Xbox gift cards and I believe these will trigger the credit, you can find the $100 Xbox gift card here. Apparently these Xbox cards also work on the regular Microsoft store. (You’ll find your XBOX gift card in your Dell Digital Locker.)

Can you split a purchase between multiple credit cards?

Yes, dell allows you to use up to three credit cards to pay for a purchase on Dell.com. This can be useful if you have multiple cards with this benefit or if you want to use the Platinum for $100 of a purchase and then another card for the rest.

What happens when you return an item you receive the credit on?

American Express offers a similar benefit on the personal version of this card but for Saks Fifth Avenue, people have reported that if an item was returned it resulted in the credit being clawed back.

Where are my digital items?

These get delivered to your Dell locker, more information here.

Final Thoughts

I’m sure I’m missing some stacking opportunities so please let me know any I missed in the comments below.

Honestly, if portals are greater than 10% though like they often are with Dell what’s the point of using the 10% off code assuming it invalidated cashback portals?

Dan - Legal Bank Robber

There isn’t but sometimes theres ways to use both.

does unidays stack with portals?

Dan - Legal Bank Robber

In theory no, since its an outside promo code. But its always worth a shot.

I can confirm xbox gift cards can be used on microsoftstore.com. Just redeem it to your microsoft account first, it will become your account balance (up to $1000). Then you can pay with your account balance on microsoftstore.com.

Dell’s website feels so 1998.

Just generated a UniDays 10% off code and it already says the code has expired two minutes after generation. Have to wait an hour before I can generate another one and try again.

Just tried a second time and was even careful to click through to Dell.com from the Unidays site after code generation. It appears Unidays codes aren’t working, and I haven’t gathered the energy to call in and request they manually apply the code. (Spouse is still in med school with a legit school email address, so I don’t feel shady doing this either)

some people mentioned that dell sometimes has promotions like spend $300 and get a $60 dell gift card, so could be helpful to stack when one of those comes around

Andrew

yes, they have these often. buy one and watch for price match. you can get some serious value this way

Amex had spend 300 get a 60 SC nov 2018, is that what you’re thinking or a separate dell promo?

Andrew

Dell has things like buy X get a free Dell GC. Example

Buy the TV with amex credit, set price match. Use Dell GC and amex credit from next half of the year for something else

Sean

Such an awesome discount here.. I purchased a top of the line desktop. Used 3 Amex cards, so got $300 off. Then got the 10% student discount, and 5% on topcashback and then 10% amex offer.

Will get the $1600 desktop for under $950 after all said and done.

I am a little confused… Do you have 3 business platinum cards? I thought the $100 dell credit was only for the Business Plat.

Joe
Joe

Yes business cards. You don’t have more than one?

Me
Me

Why would one need more than one biz plat?

JZ
JZ

Someone have more than 1 business.

Joe
Joe

Why? Because they’re a money maker. Triple dip airline credits, quadruple dip dell credits all for $450….

Daniel
Daniel

You have three authorized user cards? Those won’t trigger a separate discount. And the annual fee is now $550.

Joe
Joe

No. I said 3+ accounts of Biz Plat. $450 AF each, grandfathered in for at least another year. That’s $600 in airline +$400 in dell PER CARD. That’s $3000 in gift card equivalents for $1350

veeRob

Can you explain this math? I count $1,500 in gift card equivalents per year if you include $200 airline, $200 Dell, and $100 Saks per card.

Joe
Joe

December 2018 airline 200
Jan 2019 airline 200
Jan 2020 airline 200
Jan 2019 dell 100
July 2019 dell 100
Jan 2020 dell 100

That’s $600 in airline credits and $300 in dell per 1 AF biz plat card. That’s $900 for $450

$900×3 = 2700
$450 x3 = 1350

You make $1350 in gift card equivalents

Assuming you can sell $2,700 in gift cards for more than $1,350 this is very profitable.

As far as I know there is no saks benefit? If there is, add another $200 per a card.

2 of my relatives have cards and are letting me use their credit for this 1/2 year.

How quickly does the $100 credit show up after purchase? Thank you.

Joe

3-5 days after posting, but terms allow for up to 8 weeks

Paul

Thanks Joe.
My situation is that I ordered $99.99 worth of Xbox GCs from Dell on Friday Feb 1st. No Dell credit yet, but my annual fee hit on Jan 8th and I was told by Amex that as long as I cancel the card by Feb 8th I would get the $450 refunded. I’m guessing once I cancel the card I would not get the Dell credit. Any1 have thoughts on this? Would Amex be liniment and refund the fee a few days after the 8th if I wait? Or will I get the Dell credit even after I cancel?
Thank you in advance.

Joe
Joe

Hopefully your credit already came.

I wouldn’t push the 30 days. Cancel on the 8th.

Took 4 days for me. Bought on 2/2, credit just hit today 2/6.

This is great, thanks! I just signed up for Unidays using my alumni email 🙂
Unidays offers a 10% off one time use code for each shopping session, so I guess it should stack with portal cashback. Could anyone confirm this?

Could a Dell price match refund lead to a clawback from Amex of the Dell offer?

John
John

I was going to ask the same thing.

Joe
Joe

I feel like if the amount is over $100 regardless it wouldn’t matter. It would be crazy if you bought $200 worth of items, for the $100 off, then returned $50 worth, and then they clawback the $100.

Parkerthon
Parkerthon

If it’s automated machine learning type detection and they have a low skill off shore team processing claw backs of flagged transactions they manually review, they just might. That’s how I’d do it anyway but I have no inside knowledge..

Thank you.
Perhaps you should add that enrollment us required to receive the credit at https://global.americanexpress.com/card-benefits/enroll/shop-dell/business-platinum

Would using a free green user card trigger the credit or only the basic platinum card holder?
(Asking cuz I don’t have the amex offer saved to my plat)

my2points
my2points

Yes, you have to enroll first. After that any green card can trigger the offer. Only one $100 credit for entire account per 6 months (not one for each authorized user card).

Dell apparently has something called a “digital locker” which has the code. https://www.dell.com/support/software/us/en/04

Emailing you instructions to get your code would make too much sense.
