Update 11/20/19: You’ll want to read this comment :).
The Offer
- Hy-Vee is offering an instant $10 discount when you buy $150 or more in Visa gift cards.
The Fine Print
- Valid 11/20-11/28/19
Our Verdict
The $10 discount more-than-covers the activation fee, so this is an easy way or racking up grocery store spend. Hy-Vee stores carry $500 Visa gift cards (they do have limits on how much you can buy in a single transactions, e.g. $500, $999, etc, depending on the store).
Should be possible to buy $500 gift cards and get the $10 instant discount on each; you might need to split up the purchase and do one gift card per purchase (that’s how it’s worked in prior deals), if the cashier allows.
They ran similar deals in 2016 and 2018. Last time around, readers reported getting fuel points on the purchase as well.
Hat tip to reader Chris
Glad everybody had fun. I have been waiting for a vgc promo at Hy-Vee all year. As of Tuesday I had done 24k, then another 7k on 11/27, and since my fiancée had to work today I hit all 7 Hy-Vee around town twice today for another 14k.
Altogether 45k (about 15k in cash because I was getting worried about pushing the limits with my cards). My profit with cash and rewards is roughly $2800 (about 10k of this spend was Amex Gold).
Now to hit up Hy-Vee for the $20 Hy-Vee gift card promo tomorrow. Have 6 major appliances to purchase at Lowe’s for $4500 (less 600 in Lowe’s gc back, and $300 Samsung promo, and about $540 in Hy-Vee gift cards).
Hy-Vee has made this a pretty memorable year!
Thanks to DoC, I bought $32k of these.
I grabbed 14k and thought I had a stellar time lol. if they allowed credit card purchases at mine I would have been at just about the same. still over $700 profit for myself though!
Nice
Half of the Hy Vees in Rochester MN allow CC, other half don’t. Lot more lucrative when they do and you have the Altitude Reserve 🙂
Ad says it runs 11/20-11/28. So will it run on 11/28 (Thurs) as well or ends 11/27 (Wed) midnight?
To me, that means the promo will be valid on Thursday, 11/28, as well.
Lee’s Summit takes CC. Just bought one. ID required.
They require a manager approval who looks at ID. Manager last night was saying great deal for 30 off 500.
PV is the same. $30 off. They check ID as well.
They appear to have capped the offer. Wednesday and Thursday was able to buy 3 at a time to get $100 off. Today the system is just doing $70. My guess is giving the 2-$30 for 2-$500 gift cards then still calculated the “extra” $150 to give you the additional $10 but doesn’t discount the 3rd one. Still good offer but takes more trips now to maximize.
Still deducting 30 off 450 as of 12pm cst.
Last year, I was charged but cards were inactive. It took a week to get a refund from Hy-Vee.
I got refunded on the next day because the staff was aware of their system being down at the time of my purchase
Bought 2 $500 gift cards again. Getting an error upon calling the number on the back of the cards that the cards were not activated at the point of sale.
Does the little receipt they give you show approved?
Yes
Same here. Bought two. One activated. Other card not activated. They were having problems running debit and credit over $300.
The cards didn’t activate even today.
Is there anything on the receipt that correlates to the packaging or card?
Last 4 of the serial number on the back of the card
DP:. I’m getting $60 off $1000 in VGC with this promo. Don’t need fuel saver card to get it. Bought two $500s at one store separately, $1k in single transaction at another. Worked on both.
