[Expired] Hy-Vee: Buy $150 in Visa Gift Cards, Get $10 Instant Discount

Deal has expired, view more Hy-vee deals by clicking here.

Update 11/20/19: You’ll want to read this comment :).

The Offer

  • Hy-Vee is offering an instant $10 discount when you buy $150 or more in Visa gift cards.

The Fine Print

  • Valid 11/20-11/28/19

Our Verdict

The $10 discount more-than-covers the activation fee, so this is an easy way or racking up grocery store spend. Hy-Vee stores carry $500 Visa gift cards (they do have limits on how much you can buy in a single transactions, e.g. $500, $999, etc, depending on the store).

Should be possible to buy $500 gift cards and get the $10 instant discount on each; you might need to split up the purchase and do one gift card per purchase (that’s how it’s worked in prior deals), if the cashier allows.

They ran similar deals in 2016 and 2018. Last time around, readers reported getting fuel points on the purchase as well.

Hat tip to reader Chris

Didn’t think about the fuel saver when I sent this. I wouldn’t hold my breathe though. I buy 1-3k per month and haven’t received any fuel saver rewards on VGC in recent memory.

They do have a permanent (I think) promo of 20 cents with $100 on select gc, but not vgc.

Visa/MC/Amex GCs don’t earn any Fuel Points.

HyVee had this offer in 2017 as well

My HyVee (Lakeville, MN) absolutely will not allow cc even for store gift cards.

Same in Kansas City,MO

Lol, you just not doing it right bud. KC,MO resident here, do almost all of my manufactured spending buying $500 GCs at Hy-Vee’s across the metro.

Thanks for saving them for the rest of us!

You could offer to show them ID. I think they’re most concerned with fraud.

1 store in my area is okay with CCs. I love HyVee!

Burton

Same, a sign posted saying cash/debit only for all gift cards. I have bought hyvee gift cards in the market grill in the past on a cc (coded as dining).

I passed – probably should have tried it as even w/o cc points would have broke even, potentially made $20 but no signage and I didn’t have a copy of the ad.

CC worked in north St. paul

Can we bring back the 10% discount when buying VGC from a couple of years ago? It was a lot of fun buying $1k in VGC for $912. 😀

I’ll buy a couple tomorrow and see how it works out.

Steve
Steve

That was so great. Paid for a remodeling project with those discounts.

The one in Prairie Village asks for your driver’s license, at least, in my experiences. Also, I didn’t have any luck buying at customer service only at the registers.

Awesome I’m in the KC area too. We should talk offline. Do the non variables earn FR?

Curmudgeon

I keep a list of stores that have taken CC for VGC in the past:
– Lees Summit (both locations)
– Belton
– Independence (23rd st)
– Olathe (119th/Ridgeview)
– Lenexa (87th/Hauser -13400 West)
– Noland Rd/Hwy 40 (Independence, KC? not sure)
– Liberty

I’m happy if they ask for a drivers license to keep down fraud. My local store doesn’t bother me anymore since I’ve bought so many there that all the managers know me.

Noland Road – YMMV – based on manager on duty. I would love to exchange MO notes with you based on my experiences as well offline. lmk

And Belton was no longer last time I went…or there was a $200 limit or something.

Prairie Village (75th and Stateline) always lets me with a driver’s license. I’ve read these DPs in the past! Thanks for posting them again!

This deal just got even better! Just got $500 and $30 was taken off. I don’t know if it’s what they intended, but it’s removing $10 for every $150.

Same here. I had purchased some other items (donuts for work) so I’m not sure if it works on a gift card only, but I think it might. Although that might get some questions from the cashier. Good luck to those who have Hy-Vee’s that take credit!

Chris
Chris

Yes, my purchase was just for the gift card. Total came to $476.34 (my Hy-Vee charges tax on the fee…)

Lynn
Lynn

Same here plus taxes on fee that they shouldn’t be charging. But with 30 off 500, I’ll let it go!

Jenny
Jenny

Oh my God! I gotta hurry before they fix it

Chris

I was thinking the same thing. My friend used to work at Hy-Vee and said that each store codes the weekly sales received from corporate. I’m not sure if that’s true, but if it is then this might be YMMV.

This kind of glitch seems to happen on most of the similar promotions.

$40 taken off at my store ($30 + $10).
The manager pulled off all gift cards after my purchase.

60 off 1000. Not sure why it wasn’t 90. Must calc on the individual sku.

No, it’s because your Math is wrong. 60 is correct

Do I need to sign up for a Hy-Vee Saver+Perks account and clip the coupon to get the saving?

Chris

Nope, I forgot to give them my fuel saver this morning because I was too surprised by the $30 off.

thocon

Thank you. It’s my first time buying GC at HyVee

Chris
Chris

Went back at lunch and bought 2 of them. No credit rang up. However, the fee was 4.95 instead of 5.95. The packaging looked the same (black and gray) but obviously it was a different card since the fees were different. Manager manually entered in $10 store adjustment. Obviously didn’t want to call attention to the glitch so I just went with the $10 off $1000.

My friend went 15 minutes later and it worked for him buying 1 card. So either it was an issue with buying 2 cards (doubt it) or it had something to do with the type of card I grabbed.

Might want to check the fee and make sure it’s 5.95. Not certain though.

Kevin
Kevin

One of the stores I went to didn’t ring up the promo automatically like the rest did. I noticed that the packaging was a little different (I just generally choose the all black packaging one). There was a little white square on the lower left back that the others didn’t have. The font of the numbers on the card was also different on that one. Like you, I didn’t want to call attention to it and just took my couple dollar profit.

Chris
Chris

You are correct. The font of the numbers was different and the first 4 digits were 4917 vs 4358 for all other cards. White box in bottom left corner with QR code vs white box in top right with bar code.

Also, on the bottom right of the back of the packaging there appears to be a date 1/16 and 6/18. I assume that’s the date Metabank generated them. Also corresponds with 2 year gap in expiration dates on the card.

At least I know which ones to avoid now. Lol. The ones that do not ring up the promo are the older cards with a QR code.

DP:. I’m getting $60 off $1000 in VGC with this promo. Don’t need fuel saver card to get it. Bought two $500s at one store separately, $1k in single transaction at another. Worked on both.

Jenny

Bought 2 $500 gift cards again. Getting an error upon calling the number on the back of the cards that the cards were not activated at the point of sale.

Does the little receipt they give you show approved?

Same here. Bought two. One activated. Other card not activated. They were having problems running debit and credit over $300.

Is there anything on the receipt that correlates to the packaging or card?

Last year, I was charged but cards were inactive. It took a week to get a refund from Hy-Vee.

I got refunded on the next day because the staff was aware of their system being down at the time of my purchase

Still deducting 30 off 450 as of 12pm cst.

groney

They appear to have capped the offer. Wednesday and Thursday was able to buy 3 at a time to get $100 off. Today the system is just doing $70. My guess is giving the 2-$30 for 2-$500 gift cards then still calculated the “extra” $150 to give you the additional $10 but doesn’t discount the 3rd one. Still good offer but takes more trips now to maximize.

Steve
Steve

Lee’s Summit takes CC. Just bought one. ID required.

Lynn

They require a manager approval who looks at ID. Manager last night was saying great deal for 30 off 500.

PV is the same. $30 off. They check ID as well.

Ad says it runs 11/20-11/28. So will it run on 11/28 (Thurs) as well or ends 11/27 (Wed) midnight?
