Hyatt Extending Free Nights, Status & Points

Hyatt has announced some massive extensions:

  • Points will not be forfeited (expire) through December 31st, 2020. Normally they are forfeited if an account is inactive for 24 months
  • Free night, suite upgrade and club lounge access awards that expire between March 1st and December 31st will be extended until December 31st, 2021. This applies to both existing awards and any earned through 2020. Awards that have already expired will be replaced on April 20th, 2020. All other awards will be updated by the 20th day of the month in which they would normally expire.
  • Elite status will be extended through February 28th, 2022. No need to requalify. This should be reflected in your account no later than April 15th, 2020.

I personally think that Hyatt has handled COVID-19 the best out of any loyalty program so far. That doesn’t surprise me as they were probably my favorite loyalty program before this mess started. I’d implore readers to remember the programs that treated them well during this crisis and also remember those that treated them poorly.

I had my free night expiring on March 30th. I was legitimately planning on using it but had already been in quarantine or semi-quarantine for a while at that point. I called March 29th to see if they could extend… was only offered 10K points. She said to take it or leave it so I took it… I hope they will give me that free night back.

what about the spending on Hyatt CC this year? would we get status in 2023? if spending this year also get globalist for 2022, then this year’s spending is much devalued; may as well skip a year on spending to globalist for 2020, can you confirm?

There’s still benefits to earning Globalist naturally rather than relying on the extension.

If you earn it through spending on the CC or through stays you get –

(4) Club Access Awards
(4) Suite Upgrade Awards
(1) Category 1-4 Certificate
(1) Category 1-7 certificate

Additionally from the card specifically you get the Category 1-4 Anniversary Night and another one for spending 15k.

All things people don’t get from the extension.

And no Hyatt will not give you status until 2023 if you meet Globalist threshold without the extension. It’s unfortunate but it is what it is it’s about the many who won’t rather than the few who will.

Thank for the reply. I still consider Globalist status as the grand prize, rest is like mini-sized perks along the way. Opportunity cost of using Hyatt CC is too high if the end goal isn’t there or already there.

Love this Hyatt move. Have great loyalty to the brand. They have earlier converted my free night 1-4 certificates for 20K points. I am a Globalist and will try to requalify again. A very customer-friendly business. Hilton did a similar thing. Ef you Bonvoy.

Just talked to a representative who seems very knowledgeable. She told me the certificate won’t be extended all at the same time but will be processed the month before each one expires.

So an award that expires 01/10/2021 will not be extended, but an award that would have expired 04/10/2020 now expires 12/31/2021?

I know it says any awards earned in 2020, but also specifically says ” This includes existing awards and awards that may be earned throughout this year with a 2020 expiration date”

Yep it’s not the best but it is what it is. I have a Category 1-4 Award that expires on 1/7/2021 lol wish it was issued to expire on 12/31/2020 then it’d be extended a year!

I’m in the same boat as you. If this goes on long enough it might be extended as well.

Now if only southwest would drop the companion pass requirement…

I was hoping for a lowered required nights to reach status for this year, as I’d logged a bunch of nights pre-COVID. Of course The changes from Hyatt are still more customer friendly than anyone so I’ll still be sticking with them, just didn’t work well for me personally.

1) Not sure if the Brand Explorer free night certificate is included in this extension (for staying at 5 different brands)
2) My certificate expires 1/9/21, just earned and hadn’t a chance to use it =/ it does not fall within bounds of these dates. Too bad. Felt it was well-earned.

They handled it well, although it now kills me that I lost Globalist in Feb 2020..
