JetBlue Founder David Neeleman To Launch ‘Breeze Airways’ – Flights Anticipated By End Of Year

JetBlue founder David Neeleman has been rumored to be starting a new airline for some time, originally code named ‘Moxy‘ and now officially called ‘Breeze Airways’. Part of the reason for the name change from Moxy to Breeze is the fact that Marriott is using the Moxy brand name for one of it’s brands. Neeleman plans to have the airline flying by the end of the year and filed for it’s operating certificates this past Friday. Breeze plans to operate with a regional focus and also focus on non stop flights where other airlines are not currently offering a non stop option.

At this stage it’s not clear if Breeze will have a rewards program or partner with a credit card issuer, but once we know more we will be sure to share it.

Any idea of the market niche they’re trying to fill yet?

Yes they are 100% clear: direct flights from secondary airports. Burbank not LAX. Islip not JFK. Etc.

Salt Lake City is their “focus city” per the wikipedia article

I can see the wisdom in choosing Salt Lake – it can kind of act as a partial hub of sorts like Southwest uses in Denver. Plus SLC is in the process of replacing the entire airport with brand new terminals, concourses, etc which will apparently double their current capacity and are slated to begin operation later this year (project completion is slated for 2024).

Also, David is Mormon and from SLC. He got his start in the travel industry there.

“Part of the reason for the name change from Moxy to Breeze is the fact that Marriott is using the Moxy brand name for one of it’s [sic] brands”

Good thinking to stay far away from any Marriott associations.

Anything associated with Marriot gets premium pricing.

A quick Wiki search and I’m amazed he founded 5 airline startups while having 10 kids.

Glad to see another airline added to the mix. More competition, more choice, more low fares.
