I haven’t done MS before but would there be a play here buying fixed value $100 visa gift cards and trying to turn those into a MO at WM? Using the points for fuel as an offset for the gift card fee? Would it not be very cost effective due to the $100 limit?

Between maxing out how many fuel points you could need and the hassle of liquidation via MO, most here pay their bills or use for regular non category spend.

40 cents off per gallon in points with $100 Visa/MC purchase. Activation fee is $5.95. So, 15 gallon gas purchase to break even.

I do this, but with amazon gift cards that have 0 fee. I also maximize the discount by also filling up 4×5 gallon gas cans.

in theory, you could do the same with VGCs, but those $5.95 activation fees kill any meaningful profit

That’s an interesting idea, I was also considering delta GC and using it toward company travel later in the year

Thanks for replies, looking to hit a $6k minimum spend bonus in a cost effective manner not necessarily, may give this a whirl just to test the local WM waters

I don’t believe you can
Could get a 15gal refill and get about $6 out of each $100 gift card, so close to breakeven on cost (MO would be extra ~80 cents)

wish had the offer as that would have helped offset the vgc fee’s cost

oh man i would, but for some reason, Fred Meyer doesn’t count as grocery on my amex cards

Maybe they think it’s more of a discount store than grocery. The Freddies generally have much more square footage non-grocery than grocery, like a Walmart Supercenter. Although generally Meijer, the other Fred Meyer-like chain, is coded grocery.

yeah, thats what i figured. they do have a lot of non-grocery floorspace. its just a pity, cause i do all my shopping there anyway…but have to go to safeway to use my BCP’s 6%

If only you had some other angle that would code properly as grocery besides Fred Meyers or Safeway that could be a sweet spot
😉

“Usually, every 1000 fuel points will get you a discount of $1 per gallon”

It’s 100 points per $0.10 discount increment, up to $1 max discount per gallon. Any less-than-100 chunk of points left at the end of a month goes to waste.

“with a 35-gallon limit, a max value of $35 per 1000-points”

Some stores have reportedly gotten pissed at people filling multiple vehicles/containers on the same discount, FWIW. If you really want to try that, I’d suggest going outside of the fuel center’s staffed hours (you can pay at the pump 24/7, if you don’t mind the possibility of the receipt not printing with nobody to reprint it). Mine is staffed 7am-10pm, not sure if it’s the same everywhere.

at my local Fred Meyer fuel station in Oregon, they have to fill all my 5 gallon gas cans for me 😀

so far, no one has gotten pissed…i just tell them its for my very thirsty boat
