Many American Express Cards Got Removed from Google Pay in Apparent Glitch

(Update 4/18/21: Should be possible to add back your card now.)

Many people report getting an email from American Express that their card was removed from Google Pay for no apparent reason:

Your American Express® Card ending in _____ was removed from Google Pay on your phone. If your American Express Card account has not been cancelled, you can re-add your Card to Google Pay at any time.

Seems to be some sort of glitch – if you got notification of your card being removed, it’s not necessarily a sign your card is breached (or, at a minimum, it’s something happening to many people).

“Earlier today we discovered that American Express cards of some of our users got automatically removed from Google Pay due to an expired certificate. We are working to fix this and people will be able to add their cards back soon.” – Google.

“Thanks for reaching out. We are aware that some American Express Card Members had issues using or adding their cards to Google Pay. We’ve identified and resolved the issue. Customers should be able to add their Cards back into the Google Pay wallet. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.” – American Express.

FYI, I also saw my Wells Fargo Propel get removed. it’s an AmEx card, but not issued by AmEx, so it seems like the issue is specific to the AmEx network, not AmEx as issuer. I didn’t see any Visa or MasterCard removals.

I had 2 amex cards declined at Aldi yesterday morning. I tried one of them at the same time using Samsung pay. I did not have my wallet on me so I did not try physical. Today one of them got removed, but not the other. I cannot add it back. The message on the screen was Declined.

It’s doesn’t appear to be an AMEX problem. Most of the cards I had setup for Google Pay have been de-authorized. Google has ruined Google Pay with the introduction of the new app. People with Google Workspace accounts can’t use the new app, the new app has less functionality (which seems to be an ongoing problem with Google phasing out mature applications and replacing them with half-baked alternatives) and now this. I can’t wait until the Fed introduces their money transfer app (like the PIX app in Brazil) and replaces of all this conglomeration of crap from these companies. Americans should be able to instantly transfer money fee free. It’s amazing how Brazil can figure it out and somehow we can’t. We all know the answer however… it’s the Banking Lobby that is holding this up.

Interesting situation because my Chase and other cards have no connection issues with GPay. This is definitely a GPay/Amex issue.

I think the fed is still playing with FTPing trillion dollar txt files. How can you even expect them to have an app for iOS? Even IRS have a website built in 1989 and expect the oldest institution to be in bleeding edge of tech when Silicon Valley isn’t even USA??

American banking system is too decentralized for the FED to come up with a uniform banking system. The best we have right now is Zelle and it’s already supported by most major banks.

I’m not sure what’s going on, but I choose to be outraged.
