The Offer

  • American Airlines is offering a 30% transfer bonus when you transfer Marriott points over to American Airline miles. Below is a table of how many American Airline miles you’d receive for different levels of points transfers, I’ve also included how many miles you’d receive if you transfer the Marriott points to SPG (3:1 ratio) and then transferred those to American Airlines (1:1 transfer rate and bonus 5,000 miles for every 20,000 miles transferred).

Our Verdict

Looking at the table this deal only make sense when you start transferring larger amounts of miles. The thing is when you’re transferring SPG miles you’ll always want to transfer in chucks of 20,000 points to get the 5,000 mile bonus, that is 20,000 SPG points (60,000 Marriott points) = 25,000 American Airline miles or 0.4167 AA miles per Marriott point. When you transfer 70,000 Marriott points you’re actually getting a rate of 0.464 AA miles per Marriott point and same again when transferring 140,000 points.

The thing to also consider is that SPG also has a transfer bonus to American Airlines of 20-30% currently as well. That means that even at the higher levels of 70,000 and 140,000 SPG becomes the better option (e.g 70,000 Marriott points turns into 28333 SPG points and then 34,000 American Airline miles after the 20% transfer bonus). Basically what I’m trying to say is that with the Travel Package exclusion, this bonus is worthless in every case at least until the SPG transfer bonus ends.
